Different numbers but similar rankings to mine. I'd love to have strong selections but there's more unknowns than usual. Took Frankly Darling on at Ascot which wasnt great, but needs another step up today to beat Love a think. Reminded me of Minding when she won the Guineas so hopefully can repeat.
Derby is wide open, could make a case for plenty of them. The Goodwood pair of Khalifa Sat and Emissary have appeal at the prices but wouldn't be strong selections

TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother I notice you haven’t posted much on this thread, maybe you are letting it die I don’t know, but I would really like your take on the Sligo flat card last Thursday.
I would liken Sligo distances/times to a tangled fishing net, there is no way those distances are anywhere near correct.

If you think that Sligo was bad take a look at yesterday's meeting from Roscommon...

I just took a look at "Top Speed's" figures, looking at his going allowance it shows that he didn't find a problem, you and I know this is nothing more than creative accountancy, in other words, he made up the figures to produce a best fit scenario for the route races.

Thanks TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother i’m going to delete my Sligo sheet and condemn it to the recycle bin, Roscommon yesterday it was the last 2 races that stood out for me they were pretty much what you would expect if you compared them with just each other, but i had them over 1 sec/fur slower than the other races, either the distance was wrong or they dawdled the last 2 races, it does describe the weather as Raining on irishracing.com
I had the going as 0.88 sec/fur slow (soft to heavy)for the first 5 races
If I was going to split the going allowances I would have to have to go 1.93 Sec/fur slow (bottomless) for the last 2 races.
As bad as other tracks are Sligo wins the prize for me hands down .

Not sure whether this post belongs here but as it is about speed ratings I think it may offer something that few punters do. As we all work hard to produce accurate ratings the next step really should be trying to guesstimate what the “value” price should be. Of course any top rated horse that is not the favourite usually offers a little value but I found this article on Betfair Betting from around 2011 and calculated a race yesterday. Voila a winner at 11/4 that should have been Evens on the ratings. I don’t expect them all to win obviously but this method is a very good way of converting ratings to odds. I am not sure whether this is copyright but I wouldn’t think so as the author Simon Rowlands requests any comments or suggestions to this method. Anyway make of it what you will.

Rowles-1.jpg

Create your own spreadsheet using the following instructions: Insert values in green-coloured fields, starting with ratings in A4:A10 (or further down if a bigger field is required).
Insert "power" value in Cell A2 (this will vary for different types of races).
[The default of 0.865 was the optimum least-squares value taken from comparing Timeform ratings with Betfair SPs for a representative sample of Flat racing from last week, but those values varied from 0.775 (handicap) to 0.9575 (Group 2)].
Cell B4 is: =(MAX($A$4:$A$10))-A4, then copy down
Cell C4 is: =(POWER($A$2, B4)), then copy down
Cell C2 is: =SUM(C4:C10)
Cell D4 is: =(C4*100)/$C$2, then copy down
Cell E4 is: =100/E4
Insert "confidence" value by-horse, depending on the confidence you feel in that horse's rating (0.167 is a reasonable default).
Cell H4 (to-back price) is: =100/(D4/(1+F4)), then copy down
Cell I4 (to-lay price) is: =100/(D4*(1+F4)), then copy down
You can tie in Columns H and I to Betfair prices by inserting a look-up to the Betfair odds ladder on a separate tab.

TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother Hi Mike, I was very keen on Cairn Gorm yesterday and had a bit of a scare when he was passed and then battled back to win. I had heard that Mick Channon thought he was one of the fastest 2 year old that he had had in years. I just want to know how his speed figures relate against some of the best 2 year olds this season. If the race is as good as I think it was then I'm expecting to see a lot of winners coming from this race. Your speed figures will help me determine if it was actually that strong a race or not.

Cheers Dave

@theb
He hasn't achieved anything special speed figure wise in the 2 runs so far.

Thanks Mike, that helps a lot as I gauge the 2 year olds based on your figures. It might just mean that Mickk Channon hasn't had any fast 2 year olds recently or the comments are throw away comments. I'm just happy that he showed battling qualities and came back to win on the line.

I was told that Cairn Gorm was a Grp 3 horse but didn’t back it as when I checked it’s figure I didn’t think it was. That’s been confirmed as
Mike@the blues brothers said it’s figure didn’t reflect anything special.

Mick Channon is notorious for it. If anyone has read his autobiography one of the chapters starts with him talking about his horse on the gallops that was going to win the Derby. He probably has 10 Derby horses every year 😂

I was pleased to see TACTICAL win yesterday as I had it top rated at Ascot as well. As you can see by my ratings it is improving fast as is YAZAMAN bt the same distance as at Ascot

I rated him 115 + for that performance. I would think the Official Handicapper would put him up more than 115 for this and he is entered up in two Group 1's.

I have gone for KHAADEM in the July Cup tomorrow, not a tough race is it !! 😋, as I feel he was unlucky in the Diamond Jubilee and underexposed. I had him rated 115 for that but last year he recorded a 119 at Goodwood. As I have Golden Horde on 116 with Golden Hordes 6lb weight allowance there is only 3 lbs difference but I am not a weight man, so at the prices it has to be KHAADEM who is currently 11.00 on Betfair which I feel is overpriced. I have had a small saver on Golden Horde. I have no idea about the draw on softish ground but the winners over the last ten years have come from low and high. I think it will dry out a bit overnight and in the morning as sunshine is forecast. The ground at Newmarket drains fairly quickly. He has won on Good to Soft but well stuffed on soft and heavy but that was September and October ground. So as always, fingers crossed.

KHAADEM is out of dark angel but the form book suggests he prefers top of the ground so ground will need to dry out pretty quick.
GOLDEN HORDE was quite impressive lto and wood be my choice but little value there.

Khaadeem comes from a race where 6 past winners came from ,but has not yet managed to break through this class ceiling in a few attempts

Golden Horde comes from a race where 3 past winners came from and has a Chesham Performance fig of 92.5 compared to Khaadem 53.85

On a personal point I am missing your daily posts big time.Be great to see them return.

I started working on the speed figures for yesterday 6 meetings at 05:30 am and finished at 09.00 am, spending about an hour just on Kibeggan (IRE) card, the workload is just too much to even think about writing my thoughts on the meetings.

The best performance yesterday was Gordon Elliot's Talk Of The Town in the bumper, this was a true run race and Talk Of The Town was at the back of the field, the pace he showed getting up and beating his odds-on stable companion was breathtaking, my initial thoughts were WTF.

TALK OF THE TOWN was very easy to back and appeared to be a bit of a surprise package on debut. He didn't look the finished article but boasting a predominantly Flat pedigree, he had a superior turn of foot to the point-to-point winning second and made it count. He appeared to be at home on the ground and ended up winning pretty readily, suggesting a winners' bumper could be his next target.

Mike.
