There is something about the way HICKORY finishes his races that leads me to think he can confirm places with MOONFALL, his final furlong sectional was a half a second quicker when winning over 8f lto, it was 12.52.
The problem today is the 7f and just maybe that'll favour MOONFALL, not too sure.
Once i got caught up in the sectionals it led me to look into others including THUNDER CALL who to my mind won impressively over c/d lto, his final 2f were 11.28 & 11.94, it is the 11.28 that most interests me , proven stamina with the ability to quicken, while recognising the pace was fairly slow and the form of the race itself is questionable then but i'm swayed into believing TC might have the speed to finish up top dog here.

The top three

  • Golden Mind (95):
    • 4lb below his winning mark at the same weight.
    • His jockey has won on him.
    • Against: he gets the going flag. All three of his Good to Firm runs this year were at Ascot, and he was beaten 10 lengths or more each time. On Good here he was 4th of 28 in May.
    • Against: his handicap wins were on Heavy and on the all-weather.
  • Mezcala (85):
    • Won over this course and distance in June off 94 in a 28-runner field.
    • Level with that win on OR and weight once the 4yo allowance is applied.
    • His jockey has won on him twice.
    • Against: 12th of 16 and 6th of 17 since.
  • Realign (80):
    • 10lb lighter than his win.
    • Against: every handicap run has been at 5f or 6f, so 7f is untried in handicaps.
    • Against: 42 days off, and he has no course or distance win.

Cashelman Cashelman your actually doing something similar to what i did turning them all into out of 10 pts down system but if i can suggest something absolutely crucial to your list in fact i am going to suggest something that could make it incredibly good.
Three things keep everything you have there 1/ add in up or down in class maybe richest race gets 10 down to lowest next two points i would not just add them in but i would give first of these two a added point so its like 10+1 9+1 down this gives this more merit just enough to make it current and 2/ is last three runs added together for consistent form so your letting that not drift to far away, and now final one and to me the biggest of them all and hard to believe its not there anyway ground dependant give them points for right ground and i would make this incredibly strong as in 10+2 points 9+2 down makes it very important all these added points just make it that you have given the little tight races the added point to sway what you think is more important it could be others you think are more important.
After writing all this i seen you have class and form down so my error but i didnt want to change what i wrote for you so left it as was but going is to me crucial one of the most important things in racing.

A tricky race which will be hard to figure out but more rewarding if the winner can be found, there are too many on the convergence list to give a clue to who is coming to hand or out of form as we know what it's like at this time of year.
So thinking cap on for this one. And I like the look of: Poet Master and Mezcala only because they may be underestimated looking at their read outs.
Good luck with yours today.

After writing all this i seen you have class and form down so my error but i didnt want to change what i wrote for you so left it as was but going is to me crucial one of the most important things in racing.
gerry gerry I have the going as one of my categories but I can see for some reason it’s not showing in the output will have to rectify that

Ascot Race 1 — 7f, Class 2, 17 runners.

The headline is that this looks like a properly contested 7f, but not necessarily a total burn-up. The report expects enough pressure for finishing strength to matter, while still giving a chance to horses that can sit handy and conserve energy. The likely leader is Poet Master, with Machadadorp and Hawksbill the next most obvious pace horses. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De… 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

Likely pace map

Poet Master — draw 7 is the most likely leader. The pace model gives him the clearest early role, but there is a sting in the tail: he ranks 17th of 17 on FinishStrength, so if he is pressed, he is vulnerable late. His stable form is also a genuine negative, with recent AE measures below expectation. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De… 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

Behind him, Machadadorp (12) and Hawksbill (14) should be prominent, with Five Ways (9) also capable of sitting forward. That gives us pace on more than one part of the straight course: low/middle through Poet Master and some pressure higher up through Machadadorp and Hawksbill. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

That matters because the race may split into pace groups rather than everyone following one leader.

How Ascot 7f usually plays

The course evidence is not as strongly front-runner biased as the 5f. In big fields, 56.72% of winners came from the front half, while 26.87% came from the rear quarter. So being handy helps, but closers absolutely can win if the early pace is strong enough. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

The best overall profile is therefore not an all-out leader and not a stone-cold hold-up horse. It is a runner that can sit close enough, relax, and still finish strongly. That is exactly how I would read this race. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

The strongest late horses

The FinishStrength model has:

1. Aalto
2. Pellitory
3. Thunder Call

Aalto is the best outright finisher, but his projected early rank is only 16/17. Pellitory is 11/17 early and Thunder Call 12/17. All three therefore need some pace help and a clean run through traffic. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

Who I think has the best overall chance

Thunder Call is the horse I like most from a professional race-reading perspective.

He is not top on AbilityPlus, but the various pieces fit together better than with most. He is drawn 1, which is in the best recent draw zone, ranks 3rd on FinishStrength, and is #1 on the trainer model with a 10.50% model win probability and a very strong placement score of 59.20. The report itself labels him a Strong Contender. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

His risk is position: he is expected around 12th early, so I would prefer Harry Davies not to drop him completely out. If he can sit a little closer than projected and still preserve his finish, he has an excellent blend of draw, trainer support and finishing power.

Main danger — Mezcala

Mezcala is probably the biggest danger to Thunder Call for me.

The report calls him the best model + setup blend. He is a strong finisher, ranks 5th on FinishStrength, and his stable is in notably good form — 15-run AE 1.36, daily AE 1.54, trend rising. He is also #2 on the trainer model. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De… 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

The obvious concern is that he is projected 14th early from draw 15, so he has the same broad issue as some of the closers: he needs the race to come back enough and will need racing room.

Pellitory — dangerous, but with baggage

Pellitory is AbilityPlus #1 on 93.65 and ranks 2nd on FinishStrength, so he cannot be dismissed. His model probability is 9.75%, equivalent to about 10.26, while the report had the market around 28.00. On raw model terms that is a huge discrepancy. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

But I would not simply take that price at face value. He is drawn 16, projects only 11th early, and David O'Meara's recent trainer metrics are a significant negative. The report specifically warns that he needs the race to fall right. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

So I see him as the value/outside danger, rather than the horse most likely to get the ideal race.

Aalto — biggest late threat

If they go faster than expected, Aalto becomes very dangerous.

He is #1 on FinishStrength, with a substantial finishing edge, and is drawn 3 in the best recent draw zone. But he is projected 16th of 17 early, has been slow or awkward away in 7 of his last 10 starts, and has encountered traffic in 3 of those 10. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

He is the horse I would most expect to be flying late if they overdo it up front.

Poet Master — tactical danger, but vulnerable late

Poet Master could easily travel like the winner for a long way.

He has the best projected early position, is AbilityPlus #2, and if Clifford Lee gets a controlled lead he can be hard to catch. But his profile screams vulnerability in the last furlong: FinishStrength rank 17, weakening recent trainer data, and he has raced keenly in 5 of his last 10. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De… 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

For me, he is the horse most likely to make the race rather than the one I most want finishing it.

Arctic Dawn

Arctic Dawn is interesting at a big price because AbilityPlus has him third, only 1.48 points behind Pellitory. But his practical profile is weaker: high draw 17, held-up style, only mid-level finishing power relative to this field, and trainer form below expectation. 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De… 2026-10-03_ASCOT_(GB)_Race_1_De…

I would class him as a credible outsider rather than a principal danger.

My race picture

I expect Poet Master to take them along, with Machadadorp and Hawksbill close enough to prevent an easy lead. Five Ways and possibly River King/Realign should sit in the next wave.

That should make the final two furlongs increasingly important.

The horses I expect to benefit most if that happens are Thunder Call, Mezcala, Pellitory and Aalto.

My preferred shape is:

Thunder Call — best overall blend
Mezcala — strongest danger
Pellitory — big model/value danger
Aalto — late closer if they overdo it
Poet Master — dangerous if allowed to dictate

The one I would side with for the winner is Thunder Call, narrowly over Mezcala. I prefer Thunder Call because he combines the low draw, strongest trainer-model signal and elite finishing profile without quite as much of the high-draw/traffic dependency faced by Mezcala and Pellitory.

The biggest thing that can beat him is position. If Thunder Call is buried too far back and the pace never fully develops, Poet Master or another prominent horse could steal enough of a tactical advantage. If they go genuinely hard, then Aalto and Pellitory become much more dangerous late.
