Eric Bowers narrowing the field

Although not a Bower Handicap race, might as well see how it measures up with today's Derby.

The short-list ratings range, does include the top 2 in the live market. Bowers with the OR difference factor, shows bigger numbers as it includes the current live odds. Not that much value at the top end of the market.

It works on non-handicaps , DuckandDive DuckandDive and is a good starting point for a shortlist. In fact, I once used it as a set of ratings (100-bower) in the VDW approach.

Thapa VC 5.00 Donny.

I highlighted this horse, when I put up my first bet, Rosemary's Rose.

It was sent off fav and was travelling very well behind the leaders but Oisin Murphy couldn't find a gap and never had the chance to open up.

Currently 9/2 with 4 places with B365.

As I am not really using the Eric Bowers principles (though very interesting), I will put my future selections on my own thread. I should have done this before now!

The ones in bold become the "narrowed field". Some questions about "value" overall.

Trilby, Station X, The Bell Conductor, merit further consideration.

This is how the Bowers Short-listed ended up with the last sporting life odds show. BSP @ 4.47 for the winner.

The rating supported the method well.

First 4 in the mix.

Another early market mover, Tarbat Ness, gets taken out of my "value" range.

The narrowed short-list, falls nicely into place. Using early Betfair prices, although no real liquidity at this stage.

Winner went off @ BSP 7.20. Favourite was backed even more, so no value there for sure.

From the short-listed range of selections, Return to Unit aligns well.

Just before the off, the picture changed somewhat. Bowers short-list changed due to late money for other runner.

When combining my rating with Bowers range, the winner was still valid at a BSP 8.37.

It looks like the RP has added a filter to the race pages to stop the use of AI.

Copilot:
It looks like the page you have open doesn’t contain any readable text for me to summarise. The browser reports ContentFiltered, which means the page’s contents are blocked and not accessible.

Can it be got from the sporting life website or does it search for wherever it can get access.
I found a way around the RP filter.

I right-clicked on the individual race and copied the link address, opened Copliot and pasted in the URL,
this worked.

The trouble with using the Sporting Life card it doesn't have RPRs, which I use.

Mike.

The Racing Post really are going out of their way to make life as difficult as possible for their readers. The appalling race card ‘update’ and now this. They really do deserve to lose readership. There are alternatives, they just take a little getting used to. I’m abandoning the Post and I’ll look elsewhere.

I spoke too soon, the filter still applied itself to the data.

Michael, I can build your (RPR + OR) − Live Odds ratings table instantly — but the race you opened has no runners declared, and your browser tab contains no racecard data at all.

"I’m abandoning the Post and I’ll look elsewhere."

We have, for cards, M Monty, and have found the Life site a good one, though we have had to make some adjustments as we go along, especially with course names. My Excel app was coded to accept Epsom, but last week the Life cards referred to it as Epsom Downs, which required a little extra coding as up to that point course names only allowed for one word.

The only downside to the Life cards, and I can understand why, is that pre the day of the race they don't give going, so I have to add the forecast for that manually. Even when I used to use the Post's card, though, I not infrequently had to change going and re-run the Excel book some hours after running the race through the first time.

Another possibility is the free daily send from UKRacingData.co.uk. It is very good and had we come across it earlier might well have opted to use that rather than the Life, as it comes as an Excel download. I'd have needed to change some of the formats, particularly weights, but that is easy enough.

If the Post thought it was indispensible, it needs to think again.
