Bookmakers

Worth the read IMO.

With the process of pushing through some form of legislation, it's whoever's in power, more convincing/crafty, that will get what they want.
So with gambling, they will always get what they want when "problem gambling" is tied to a green/white paper.

On-line poker in the U.S took a hit back in 2011 when a senator craftily snagged it on the end of a bill on terrorism. Their main motive was to stop americans spending their money on online gaming/gambling. (as far back 2003 even). It's started slowly to come back state by state 2021/2022.

The "problem gamblers" will always find someway of gambling their money. As mentioned, the black market exists and is flourishing. The issue there is that some shady operator will be ready to knock/scam them, with no recourse or avenue to legally fight back against them.

Interestingly. when the big bookmakers asked their VIP's to provide the necessary bank statements, P45/P60's, 95% said no, or words to that effect.
Although I'm not a VIP, I'd say no too.

It is worth noting that VIP clients are generally those the bookies think will lose the most money and so arguably will have a higher proportion of "punters" that have issues of varying degrees and will most certainly include those that might be considered "problem gamblers" so no surprise they would say no as they will lose their ability to fund their addiction so that stat to me at least has not a great deal of credence.

That said - I would be less than pleased to provide my inside leg measurements, but then if the law of the land says I have to then I would as I will not risk going underground and losing my money to crooks - oh wait!

Unfortunately many are losing there money now to crooks who are not underground but rather once respected major firm bookmakers. Covertly sneaking in changes to there T&Cs would be one example of said crookery, and this is an increasing occurrence.

Racing TV campaign

The letter reads......

I wanted to raise my concerns, as your constituent, regarding the ongoing Review of the 2005 Gambling Act and the potential impact it might have on myself and my enjoyment of horse racing.

As someone who follows and bets regularly on horse racing as an interest and a hobby, I am concerned about the affordability checks and limits on deposits, stakes and losses which are reportedly being considered as part of the Review.

I believe the amounts which I bet, as with the other choices that I make in my day-to-day life, are a question for myself, and the implementation of these restrictions would impinge on my civil liberties. I make similar financial decisions on all aspects of my life, from shopping to leisure pursuits, which are not regulated by Government, and I believe that gambling sits in the same category.

I would not feel comfortable sharing my personal data and confidential information with bookmakers to be able to bet, and I believe this would be a concern for many others and lead to more black-market betting.

I also am very concerned by the impact of these changes on the sport of horse racing – a sport which I and many millions of people greatly enjoy and which supports tens of thousands of jobs across the country.

Will you please impress upon the Minister and DCMS that betting on horse racing is a leisure activity that I enjoy regularly and safely, along with millions of others in the UK? Can you also please highlight to the Minister that the Review should not undermine my civil liberties to bet, and does not damage the horse racing industry which I support and does so much for the country?

.

I should point out that i am not a subscriber to SBC but am on there mailing list and have just received the below which is worth the read. I e mailed my MP several weeks ago and as expected received a non committal type BS response, but i still believe the more of us who do then the better the chance of the buggers starting to see things from the punters perspective.

RESOURCES AND INFORMATION

Past experiences have shown that by grouping together on an important topic we can have an impact and once again its time to take action.

For example - the number of bettors who took part in the Gambling Commission's consultation on what needs to change back in early 2021 seemed to surprise them and was something of a 'win' for punters.

Now its the turn of those in power to listen to us and this is why both Neil and SBC recommend those of you who live in the UK write to your MP to highlight these issues.

Neil has penned a few excellent articles on this topic including a template letter/email to send to your MP, which you can find at this link:
https://www.bettingemporium.com/pages/view/gambling-review

For more background and information on this topic, you can explore more in this additional podcast and article from November 2021.

As ever your feedback on this and other episodes is always welcome and if you enjoy the Smart Betting Club podcast - be sure to leave a positive review!

WHY THIS MATTERS & WHY SBC CARE

The ongoing debate on the law changes matter as if stringent deposit limits are brought in - this will only serve to send punters into the black market to bet.

Equally if the same bookmakers who created this mess are allowed to dictate how they monitor customers further, then the problems of an unfair, unbalanced betting market are not going to go away.

SBC care about this topic and ensuring punters get a better deal as we are one of the very few, truly bookmaker-independent voices in the betting space.

We rely on the funding of our members in the form of subscription fees and therefore take nothing in advertising revenue from bookmakers, unlike so many betting media outlets and journalists, who are directly or indirectly on their payroll.

We also believe that the gambling review should explore other important topics including bookmakers delaying or refusing withdrawals and abuse of the ID/security checks situation when dealing with customers they don't like (i.e. winners). Expect to hear more from us on these points very soon!

As a punter you are always just one winner backed at bigger than SP away from being restricted, they are only interested in people who bet all day on random stuff losing and chasing their losses. The shouldn’t be granted licenses

A badge of honor no way, just pathetic behaviour from a once respected horse racing Bookmaker ( WH ).

I get that at the top end of the market with bet365 and sky, boyles won't accept any bet now

But people's experiences can be different with the same bookie cos some are ok with me but I've seen others are binned with them

Problem is that the government defends the bookies 'right' to weed out the mugs from the savvy betters. Maybe they all have shares in the magic sign I dunno. What they should be saying to the bookies is if you pass someone as financially fit to bet you can't restrict their accounts at a later date and have to honour any advertised odds up to say a maximum of £200, but whilst they continue to uphold the rights of bookies to fleece their customers problem gambling is never going away despite whatever checks you make. Give the goddam punters a chance for a change. Advertising odds that you can never get on at is just a way to get the suckers through the door, once their in you've got them. No other industry is allowed to do it, so why should bookies get away with it?

I will walk away from racing in a heartbeat before I allow them access to my financial information, do a credit check if they want, after that they can get fucked end of story.

It's more than just the bookies; it's the rulers who are pushing for a cashless ( ie bank-controlled ) society.

Cashless would be just fine, if there were no money, but,
while money remains an integral part of the rulers' system, then cash is king for the ordinary man. :)

Once we are just digits on some fkn bankers' database, we are fkd, and totally at the mercy of the bstrds.
Trust the fkrs if you wish, but, I don't. Fk 'em.

Long ago it was Bookmakers who coined the phrase Mug Punter in public they now use Recreational but within there trade rooms those customers they still view and think of as the former will be groomed and encouraged with the intention of squeezing even more money out of them . We all started as mug punters but over time some of us become less so and as soon as this is picked up on we are prevented from continuing to bet.

While the above situation should not be occurring in the first place the solution lays with us but it appears we are not prepared to collectively implement it. This will prob be down to the fact that the majority are not currently affected by bet restrictions and other punitive measures so are not interested in the plight of those who are, but in future some of those will trip the algorithms and find themselves also begging a bet which is not a nice experience.

It is because of this punter apathy that the large Bookmakers continue to feel that they can do as they please, and until we collectively withdraw our business and tell them why then nothing will change. If my above thinking is correct then they are sending a message to all of there customers........While you continue to lose money we want your business but if this situation changes then we are going to show you the door. !

It is a forlorn hope but imagine if every Ladbrokes customer e mailed them today saying i will not be betting with you in future because you have restricted a punter pal of mine to pennies at the price and removed all concessions, and i am now apprehensive that simular could happen to myself and this thought ruins my enjoyment on the rare occasions when i back a good winner with you at better than SP because this was my mates crime. !

The above would do it with the positive irony that the vast majority would actually be saving money by refraining from betting for a while. !

for once we agree on something

cashless is a totalitarian's wet dream, especially those with nonsense in their heads thinking they have a right to other people's assets.
