Bookmakers

Just doing a few more using Opera now I'm done for the day. With VPN settings set to 'Optimal', so far I've accessed......... Ladbrokes, Betfred, Netbet, Betregal, Matchbook, 888sport, Betuk & MansionBet. Access Denied:- William Hill, Paddy Power, Skybet, & BetVictor,

I didn't expect to get in to Ladbrokes I must admit but Opera VPN does have potential it would appear for those struggling to get a bet on.

I can access all but 365. They are the only company that employ people to actively block ip addresses that are owned by vpn companies.

I'm hopefully home in less than two weeks now and have a PC ready to be setup with remote access software which will enable me to access sites using a uk residential ip address ...

My access will no longer be the issue, my winning money from them will then become the main issue. (Hopefully)

It's weird that the majority of my accounts are actually in negative positions .. for some reason almost everything I seem to bet with skybet does well, Betfair does well too, but all other bookies I have used (Ladbrokes, willhill, marathon, betfred) are in negative positions ... And two of those low turnover or negative balance accounts are the ones that are currently giving me attitude.

The accounts that have won most have not yet put any limits/restrictions in place.

Are you using one of the subscription VPN providers pete pete ? If so can you tell us which one it is. All except Bet365 is impressive and may be of interest to others if they know they are guaranteed an anonymous connection to so many bookies.

I use express VPN.

Willhill comes in and out and I occasionally have to switch locations .. But have not had issues with any of the others using it.

I note Bruce is changing his tune, because during the 11 yrs he was Racing Post Editor the Bookmakers could do no wrong. !

mick mick Very strange! One things for sure is that the implementation of such a system isn't going to do the bookies turnover any favours. What about on course bookies? Will we have to open an account and jump thru' all the hoops before we go out for the day? I don't think so.

I have not been for a while but my understanding is that the majority of independent on course bookmakers will still take a bet. Imo once again it will be the large on line firms who will push for this intrusive piss take. I suspect there attitude will be that anyone not prepared to provide these details may have something to hide so we do not want there custom anyway.

In this respect they may come unstuck because i suspect that plenty of there long term losing customers will also object and seek other outlets or just stop betting. Although the former may get an easier ride Re how quickly this info is demanded from them. ? To a lesser extent this has been occurring for years. You open an account make a deposit and start placing bets all with little or no fuss............it is only when you dare to request a withdrawal that the questions start. !

I'm sure that the vast majority of losing punters will not be keen to comply. It's bad enough when you're reminded of how much you lost, being asked to prove that you can afford your losses is just rubbing salt into an open wound. How many punters do you know that are willing to so much as admit to being a losing a punter? Asking them to confirm it is a definite no no if you ask me.

The more I think about the consequences of all this, the more disastrous for the racing industry (bookies included), it becomes. Pete's VPN activities prove that it is possible to get bets on by alternative means from anywhere in the world. The offshore operators will most certainly move in with promotions to fill the void. The losses to the levy could end up being enormous.

I see ladbrokes has just sold betdaq back to Dermot Desmond. Got a notification via email this morning about the change of ownership. Had not caught the news before this.

Can't help but notice that it was for an undisclosed sum. I'll bet whatever they sold it back for, Ladbrokes took a hell of a knock on the deal. Good to see that it's out of the clutches of the 'Magic Sign' at least for now. Maybe Dermot has plans to win back some of the big players Betfair has lost since the introduction of the Premium Tax.

He could be planning to have something in place when the US markets become available.

All these giant corporations places all the power and records in a limited number of hands - what about the case of independent enqs - this is old bit still relevant if you dont want to watch it all just skip to around 58mins and listen to the part that independent bookies records can be used for good

I am not an advocate of monoplies and certainly don't want to see punting portrayed as Bingo or other "entertainment activities" but MGM etc are cited as cleaning up ( at least on the surface) Las Vegas and Atlantic city casinos

Earlier this week i contacted the HBF and have just received the below, good to know that they are already on the case. The letter they mention is long and detailed ( i was unable to copy - paste it on here but hopefully the Gov Minister concerned will be given pause for thought ).

Thank you for your recent email. The HBF is also concerned about SCV and how it will be introduced. Recently we wrote to the Information Commissioner's Office and raised a number of issues. We have also met with the Betting and Gaming Council who are going to be coordinating a trial of SCV in early 2022.

Please find attached the letter we wrote to the ICO.

We sent a similar letter to the Government Minister Chris Philp who is responsible for the Gambling Act Review.

I would strongly urge that you do the same and raise your concerns as well.

Best regards

Colin Hord
Chair HBF

Re The HBF they have received plenty of stick on forums ( Often from people who have the time to post criticizing, but not to e mail there MP or other relevant organizations ) but to be fair the HBF have made some progress mostly under difficult circumstances. For any members who have an interest in these matters The HBF site can be found here................. Horseracing Bettors Forum – Supporting British Racing Bettors............ they are all volunteer's receiving only basic expenses.

What annoys myself is that The BHA while claiming credit for implementing the above are not prepared to fund a single salaried employee dedicated to improving the punters lot. !
