Jockey v Jockey

Hi, I wonder if anyone can a shine light on this subject for me please,

The more interested I get in horse racing, making systems/studying form, watching horse racing, and so on, the more I begin to learn how things work in the horse racing industry, and some things that I have learned dont seem 100% ethical, although I understand certain things have to happen to keep the wheels turning,

I have no intention to embarrass anyone, just interested in how it works

When I am making systems and studying form, especially for handicaps, I like to match jockeys up with trainers, and after reading form and I think the horse has a fair chance at the price, like most people I would imagine, would check the jockey/trainer combo among other things, and like most of you that look at and make systems will already know this can be checked on a full scale, as in not just one jockey/ trainer combo, but all combo's, and its not hard to find that sometimes certain jockeys are brought in when the horse has a good chance at the weights, and sometimes different jockeys are brought in when they have very little chance,

So firstly I was just wondering if this kind of thing is just generaly accepted, or are there rules to try to stop it going to the extreme? and could anyone give me a little advice, if the wrong jockey is brought in and this happens in one of your systems when you are using it live, would you go ahead with your qualifer or would it be a no bet? thanks.

Not that I always listen to myself, but I usually say "back the horse", not the trainer/jockey - if you like the horse, it doesn't matter who trains or rides, back it (even though I do follow trainers, but I try to select the horses I like from the pool of trainers I follow).

You can use Jockey StaTS to see if they are better on Certain pace styles

I find some trainers give very honest appraisals of their runners chances

Stockpyle won well last Wednesday, he has no penalty in this race so it looks a good opportunity. if it’s not too soon he seems very well so hopeful.

Hi there R rbtblb82,

I read alot on the forum about following and consentrating on certain trainers and trying to understand their working habits, maybe this is the kind of thing you do? , I have never thought of this as a way in, but it does make alot of sense and sounds very interesting especially for people trying to learn more about horse racing, its probably something similar to what I have been reading about on the forum over the last few days, it comes up in quite a few posts little bits here and there, dating back over the years, I think what seems to be the original post is from 2013 and trying to understand it little by little, but it keeps me interested.

Hi Chesham what a great piece of kit this is. this is HRB? if it is you seem to be able to loads of things with it, when I tried it I could not do anything like this, I suppose its a very big program and will take alot of learning how to use it, is there anything on this site to help learn how to use it? thanks for posting and letting me see what it can do.

Yes it’s HRB and there are hundreds of different angles that you can use it for.

One of the best angles is to find a front runner who is racing over a C&D that indicates a Front Runner holds an advantage. Then match up with a Jockey that does well ridding a front runner . The next part is to see what its speed rated is. TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother kindly supplies probably the best Speed figures you can get. mlmrob mlmrob kindly puts those ratings into a race card format. This is all free to you.

When you get a front runner who also has the best speed rating they are difficult to peg back, especially if the jockey is capable of setting the fractions

In my system i used in the olden days mainly with sprints, i used this way from the old sporting life race readings also mainly on the same course or a course with very similar characteristics, nowadays the horses seem to change in running tactics more for some reason i find, even though the form book says front running or prominent is maybe best for the horse concerned and its chances to run well or win again.

I wasn't saying you should follow a specific trainer/jockey combination, just that if you're going to, don't just blanket bet all of their horses, just pick their horses that you like - I've learnt the hard way not to do that, it doesn't work just blanket betting every horse for a particular combination. I do follow certain trainers and combinations myself though, but I used to follow the top trainers and now I've switched to the lesser trainers, just testing it out as they have better odds (less wins but better odds).

Good luck with it anyway.

My brother followed trainers as he loved it for years too, he followed hobbs over jumps and balding on flat no matter horse or trainers form.
And i tried to tell him for years get about 5 trainers at each code and then you have choices, and only bet the trainer who is in form at time of season that way you will likely have solid choices to make that will pay of all season.

Agreed Gerry - My mum's 92 year old neighbour just plays Andrew Balding, and I've shown him the stats and highlighted the fact that he's guaranteed to lose doing that, but that's what he likes to do so he carries on doing it.

I think you need a pool of several that you like to select from, and then mix them together, it's the only way to do it I think, you have to MIX MIX MIX. Imagine you're making a mix tape, NOW (That's What I Call Horse Racing).
