I've been looking at the decline in the number of runners in different types of races since the start of the century
So I decided to compare the UK and IRE average number of runners in flat stakes races against those in the Group races at the St Leger meeting.
There has been a decline overall in the UK and to lesser degree in IRE it seems, where as the individual St Leger meeting group races can fluctuate much more year on year.

I have been investigating changes in horse racing and betting this century re my belief that the game has got harder, I put this together looking at GB Hurdle Stks.
This shows how as the fields have on avg got smaller so has avg isp’s , avg isp’s of winners , and avg isp’s of favs. Plus strike rate of favs has gone up.

One partial solution would be to drop these 8 race cards, back in the day we only had 6 race cards and quite frankly that was sufficient
total disagreement, 8 races should be a minimum, other countries all over the world USA, France, Hong Kong wouldn’t dream of shortchanging customers with just 6 races, also the more races on a card the more reliable time comparison, what should really be happening is the should drastically reduce the amount of fixtures
My only point is that when i see 20 runners or more in fairly ordinary handicaps just looks like a bookmakers benefit so if the answer is to split those races up and have more races on the day ? i would say yes.
10 to 12 runners is plenty imo and i recognise many courses are limited on safety grounds but in recent years i've been put off by such as york very often have these big fields which overwhelm.

And yet if we were only allowed to bet with bookmakers those big handicaps offer some of the most natural built in edges via the place rules
