Compiling Speed figures.

TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother Mike can I ask you a question, do you use RP standard times for your ratings or do you have your own. Only asking because I’m thinking of completely re-doing my flat standards and wondered how much you would trust the RP standards for the flat.

The RP standard times are continuously being worked on by Craig Thake "TS", the major errors still being a problem are the race distances from racecourses in Ireland, notably the old favourites Sligo, Cork, and Tramore etc.

I use a combination of the RP and your original standard times plus +15 years of experience to correct any fast outliers,

Due to recent fast-moving conditions and hot weather, flaws in the standard times have been popping up regularly and have to be adjusted.

You can have the best set of standard times on the planet, but without the knowledge of calculating going allowances, you're up the shitty creek without a paddle lol.

The number of times I have queried an RP standard and your standard time has fixed it is uncanny, when this happens, I record the standard time change in my standard times list.

I won't be publishing the standard times list I work to. It's a long time in the making and includes my lbs per length figures for every racecourse and distance.

Mike.

Yes I think a lot of the issues come from RP having an old set of standard times and trying to update them with distance changes, in the uk it’s not worth even looking at times pre 2017 when they re-measured the course and found bundles of errors, the jumps I think were remeasured in 2015 and of course the errors were even worse. Thing is these errors would have been even worse in Ireland the distances were/are a work of fiction, i think Galway were the first to remeasure and massive discrepancies, the CofC Lorcan Wyer at the time also C0fC’d Sligo and that is the worst in Ireland for distances, apparently the Irish tracks measured properly prior to 2024 season but didn’t bother publishing how far out the old distances were or if any starts were moved to compensate, so it could be argued and time or distance prior to 2024 is a total nonsense in Ireland. Cork they built a new straight track that commenced in May 2019, so again standards would need more time to settle.
I have still seen distances that are clearly wrong in Ireland you get 1f sectional times but that bit before the first full furlong does a lot of heavy lifting to hide a multitude of sins.
The Irish don’t seem to have default distances they just plonk the starting stalls where they feel like it, certainly they never seem to race over the same distance twice at the longer distances.
