I was going to do the full list with VDW, but I got bored, far too many listed atm, and obviously the maximum number of runners is 34 this year, so half of these won't be running anyway, but I did it down to Envoi Allen, plus all weights added....

Iknowthewayurthinkin is meant to be running, but I can't see him on any of the gambling sites, just on Racing Post and Timeform atm.

I think I fancy Mr Vango, I Am Maximus, Threeunderthrufive and Hewick atm. Minella Indo could run well again, but 12 yro now.

If Broadway Boy, Iroko, Nick Rockett, Hyland, Beauport, Montys Star or Monbeg Genius wins I'll be shocked, those horses are rubbish, well over-rated and they're not even rated. All naff in my opinion, but all been running poorly this year as well, except Hyland's had one decent run.

Agree there is some dross in this race this year, Stumptown stands out to me.

I do like Stumptown, I follow & usually back Gavin Cromwell anyway, but Stumptown is one his better horses that I usually always back, I backed him at Cheltenham, my only concern is the turn around - 3m5f on 12/03 followed by 4m2f 05/04, only 24 days later. He is still only 8 yro, so 24 days could be enough for him to fully recover, depends how much it took out of him.

My mum picked Malina Girl for the Ultima, 3m1f (Gavin Cromwell horse, it was 3rd @ 14/1), so she's having it in the national @ 80/1, why not ey.

Inothewayurthinkin is out of the Grand National, apparently he was 3/1 favourite, not that it was listed anywhere other than William Hill that I could find, but Cromwell has taken him out, sounds like they're keeping him as a Gold Cup horse, and might go the the Punchestown festival/Gold Cup.

It looks like the Irish Grand National has been a good race for picking horses in the UK Grand National over the last few years...(there was no Irish or UK Grand National in 2020)

  • Burrows Saint won the Irish Grand National 2019 - 7th in the UK Grand National 2021
  • Freewheelin Dylan won the Irish Grand National 2021 - 26th in the UK Grand National 2022
  • I Am Maximus won the Irish Grand National 2023 - won the UK Grand National 2024
  • Intense Raffles won the Irish Grand National 2024 - favourite for the UK Grand National 2025

Classic commentary from Jerry Hannon!

Last time I looked, since 2000 there's been 59 runners go from the Fairyhouse Irish Grand National to the following Aintree Grand National, 2 have won and 6 have placed. That includes 13 winners of the Fairyhouse Irish Grand National and only 1 has gone on to win the following Aintree Grand National.

Nearer the time I'll post detailed stuff but unlike some of the other 'Nationals' the Aintree Grand National doesn't have any good trial race trends imo.
The best of a bad bunch for runners go to following Aintree Grand National for ew bets are

Fairyhouse Bobbyjo Chase Stakes 3m 1f 88y Grade3 in Feb
Cheltenham Cross Country Chase Stakes 3m 5f 56y C2 in March

Aye, it's more from the last 4/5 years - they've done reasonably well over the last few years - probably just with the Irish domination across the board these days. I just thought that since I Am Maximus did it, maybe Intense Raffles has a chance, but 5/1 bit short for the national.

There is a strategy i have followed for years in grand national and i must admit i do pretty good and i think is more prevailent now easier fences than past.
The big fences actually make it easier to get the distance than people think not harder.
But anyway what i do and it seems to work is if the ground is good or faster all you need to do is study the horses from top weight down to 10th and winner is usually in there some where so cuts field.
And if ground is soft or slower you do opposite and disgard them and look below that weight and usually breeding can help with that to horses who like soft.
But main point is ground is everything in national.

Interesting Gerry, I often do back a few of the bottom weights due to the distance, but will check the going and bear this in mind.

Interesting that since they made changes in 2013 :-
- all the winners from 2015 onwards have never fallen previously.
- only 2 winners had run over a 4 mile chase previously
- all the winners from 2015 onwards have been no more than 9yr old

It looks like Mr Vango will miss out, not happy, I agree with Sara Bradstock and they should limit each trainer to 3 entries.

'Maybe we need to cap trainers at three' - Sara Bradstock voices Grand National frustration with Mr Vango set to miss out

Sara Bradstock has joined a tide of voices lamenting the evolution of the Randox Grand National, with the changes to racing's greatest spectacle almost certain to keep this year's London National, Peter Marsh and Midlands National winner Mr Vango out of the race.

The massive nine-year-old would get into the race with ease off his current BHA rating of 152. However, because the weights are finalised in February and no penalties are awarded to winners after that point, he is stuck on the outside at number 49 on the list, with a mark of 143, and needs a highly unlikely 15 to come out to get into the field.

Where as I just checked and the age range for place only over the years is 7 to 13

Absolutely bored of trainers having half the field, Mullins , Elliot and the new kid on the block Cromwell could literally have every horse in the race between them if they wanted. Soon there will be Gold Cups and Grand Nationals with no U.K. runners, we are getting close to that already.

I've long said that I believe trainers should be limited to about 25% of the field, and probs capped at 4 overall
i.e. 2-6 runners - 1 only
7-11 runners - 2 max
12-15 runners - 3 max
16+ - 4 max

Anything over 155lb is a negative for me, I wouldn't outright draw a line through but would have to have a lot of other points in it's a favour

Out of the last 20 GN's (2004 - 2024) 5 winning jockeys had never ridden in the race before, well from 2000 onwards, and 3 had never won at Aintree full stop
