Your biggest wins

quiet gambler

Yearling
I'm interested in hearing your biggest wins.

My favourite coup is Madison Du Berlais (My collateral ratings, had him top rated) taking the Totesport Bowl at Aintree, in 2009. I had £250 E/W @ 14/1 (Coral). Profit £4,200. This was planned on March 13th 2009, 3 weeks in advance, after he had not handed the course, in the Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase. I put the bet on, in a Coral in Redhill, Surrey. As he passed the post, I gave like a fist pump. Then I turned and saw cashiers looking at me from behind the counter as if they were in shock. Then I was embarrassed and looked away. They paid it out, in cash. This was from a safe.

Another favourite coup is Cerium finishing 5th in the 2009 Grand National, at Aintree. I had £40 E/W @ 500/1 (Stan James). Profit £4,960. This was also planned on March 13th 2009, 3 weeks in advance, after Cerium had run to finish 13th, in the Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase, proving he had retained a lot of his form, unlike a lot of his last attempts. Cerium had been a useful chaser (My collateral ratings, said he would run well). If you look through Cerium's form, you see he had been pulled up or run below form for reasons such as breaking blood vessels and irregular heartbeat. Cerium ran in a claiming chase at Chepstow and was favourite. It was clear Cerium had a problem. Cerium was losing touch and was pulled up before going out onto the final circuit. Also, Liam Heard never pushed Cerium. Liam Heard eased Cerium up, as if Cerium has a problem. Cerium is sold and runs to credit, in the 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase. Cerium hasn't run to previous ratings, but proved that he has retained a lot of his form. So I betted Cerium in the 2009 Grand National.

Those coups were known on punters post forum, at the time. It also got put up on 606 racing.

I also betted Our Vic to win the 2008 Betfair Bowl at Aintree. £200 WIN @ 15/2 (Coral). Profit £1,500.

Other bets include:

Tatenen wins h'cap chase at Ascot at 22/1. This was put up on 606 racing refugees and I was so sure, and I was surprised some punters betted it, and put messages of thanks, on the thread after.

Tatenen wins h'cap chase at Ascot again 8/1.

Nun With A Gun wins novice hurdle at Newton Abbot 16/1. That was put up on bash the bookies forum.

Estates Recovery wins h'cap chase at Newton Abbot 16/1. That was put up on 606 racing refugees.

A favourite of mine is Tartan Snow taking the Aintree Foxhunters Chase 100/1.

I would now like to hear your favourite big wins.

You mean you are not saying? There must be something you are proud of? Something you planned. I remember I had £130 E/W on a horse called Outlander in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup, and look where the f*** that finished, never handed the course. That was big loser for me that I remember. I try to avoid Cheltenham, except for laying.

Funny I just see you liked that post Outlander and I was just talking about your namesake. Good horse. He never liked Cheltenham or Punchestown, a?

Outlander won in Leopardstown I think he beat 4 horses who all won at the cheltenham festival couple of months later

I remember that. Missed out on him there. Then I hoped he would run in the Irish Gold Cup, but Gigginstown at the time as you know, used to bypass that race and head for Cheltenham, after the Lexus.

My biggest win is £1,760, and I've had £900, £780 and £660 in single bets, but I usually put 5/6/7 horses in with smaller stakes and hope I hit at least 5 winners, I don't tend to put larger amounts on like you do, I just don't like losing that much in one go, but I often think I should put less horses in and increase my stakes.

And I keep forgetting about forecasts, I think that could be a good way to get big returns sometimes, especially in certain races e.g. a W P Mullins forecast in the grand national would have returned a fair bit, just from £1 stakes.

I loved reading your story. I rarely bet. I try not to bet big, but if I like it lots, get stuck in, bigger price the better.

A bet I messed up, previous Grand National. I bet £150 E/W Eldorado Allen 80/1. I think that is £14,700 payout! Leading to about a mile out. There is a cash out button, but I'm not pressing it! I was concerned about stamina and he never stayed.

I thought, right, Topham Chase. Joe Tizzard thought this and run him. So I had £100 E/W 33/1. He seemed not in the form of the year before, and run badly. That was a mess up.

I remember the same trick when Portrait King fell in the 2015 Grand National,. I never backed him. Then I saw him in the 2017 Topham 80/1. His name jumped off the page. I had to back him. By the time I arrived at Betfred, he was 100/.1, so I had £30 E/W. He finished 3rd and that was £720 profit. But the Eldroado Allen plot, messed up.

I rarely bet. From last seasons Grand National, my next bet was at this years Cheltenham festival!

But thanks to Gaelic Warrior winning the Bowl £1,053.69, I was in profit for Aintree. Something like £591.

I love the Bowl and that is my first big bet in the Bowl, since 2009. I have won it big, 3 times. MY FAVOURITE RACE IS THE BOWL!

I had in the National, Royal Pagaille £10 E/W 110/1. The price was too big but I backed it, more out of support. I think his jumping is not Grand National standard. Should not have been running and been great for owner, taking Betfair chases. After a circuit, pulled up, and I think this was right.

I had £20 E/W Horantzau D'Airy 125/1. Running well but before turn in, beginning to seem outpaced. Jockey never pushed it, at that point. I would have liked to have seen it pushed, for about a furlong, before the turn in. It seemed like it was being looked after.

I wasn't riding the horse so I have no idea, the thoughts of the jockey. The horse could been tired and the jockey looked after him.

He is on my hit list, for a win at some point!

£10 E/W Sam Brown 14/1, in the previous race and that run was terrible.

My biggest mistake recently was the grand national, I'd literally just said to my housemate the sensible bet is to put all Mullins horses in and play a combination tricast, 1st 33/1, 2nd 7/1 and 3rd 33/1, just £1 on that and it would have been very nice, but I didn't do it!

I have never been a big punter by any stretch of the imagination but the biggest priced winner I backed was Bolkonski, 20000 Guineas 1975, at 33/1. Ridden by Frankie’s dad would you believe. That won me a week and a half’s Wages.

The biggest bet I ever had was two weeks Wages on Bruni, ridden by Lester Piggott, in my first visit to the Arc in 1976. I remember queuing up at The Tote window (Pari-Mutuel) and some French official telling me I couldn’t put the bet on. I didn’t do French at school so couldn’t understand a word he was saying. Nobody else in the queue behind seemed to speak English either, unless they just couldn’t understand my Brummie accent. Anyway, I would not move and eventually they gave up and took my bet. Thinking about it now, I was probably standing in the 10p queue or whatever the French equivalent was.

Most of the English were on Bruni and when he trailed in 5th a group of English lads walked up to the rail shouting “Piggott ya BANKER” (I think that should begin with a W). I was quite shocked really, dissing the great man like that.

Well come the last race Piggott still hadn’t rode a winner and I was sure he wouldn’t go home without one. He was riding top weight in a handicap and I put a week’s Wage on him. He just about got him home. So, I made a nice profit on the day.

He must have got him home if you won lol. Maybe he just about got it beat but lucky for you he didn't.
