What betting task would you most like to automate?

hiberok

Yearling
Hi everyone,

I'm interested in finding out what tasks bettors would most like to automate.

I develop custom scripts and tools, and I'm curious where existing software falls short or where people are still doing things manually.

For example:

  • Collecting odds and tracking price movements
  • Scraping data from websites
  • Comparing bookmaker odds and identifying discrepancies
  • Collecting match statistics and analysing historical results
  • Sending alerts when certain conditions are met
  • Automating spreadsheets, reports or repetitive tasks
What's the most time-consuming or frustrating part of your betting process that you'd like to automate?

Is there a tool you wish existed, or something your current software doesn't do well enough?

I'm particularly interested in practical problems that could be solved with a small, focused tool rather than another all-in-one betting platform.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Here is a couple of personal bits of software I have been meaning to write but have not got round to it

1. Horse tracker that runs on your own machine (no passing your tracks to 3rd parties) but one that also analyses profit and loss of past tracks whether they were specified as bets or lays

2. Betfair betting history analyser (this may exist somewhere) however it would need to allow you to specify bet strategy names with a bet size (sadly Betfair does not allow you to tag bets with a strategy name and they have wound up sub accounts)

I am sure I can conjur up a few more

The most time-consuming part of my strategy development cycle is visualizing data properly.

In the process of strategy development, when code is involved, a lot I can now do on live data without the need to rebuild the code, but when I do need to rebuild it, I lose the current data context, which I can only get from the running application.

Up to now I have not found a good solution for that. Well, yes, a small part of the code in its initial state can be written in small script files, but as the code grows, I am limited.

I was referring to more mainstream products. The products you're describing need to be developed specifically for you; they can be custom-made.
For example, I have a Telegram bot for notifying you about Pinnacle odds drops. Something like that. The product is easy to install and doesn't require any personal data or installation on your PC. It runs on a server and sends you the data via a Telegram bot. I'm sure something like that is also necessary for horse racing.

The software could be made generic with a few installation parameters

Yes, that's a good point. A generic tool with a few configuration options could work well.

I'm more interested in finding tools that would be useful to a wider audience. For example, my Pinnacle odds monitoring tool can track odds movements and send alerts through Telegram.

Do you think there would be demand for a similar tool for horse racing, such as alerts for significant odds movements across bookmakers, without needing to run software locally?

What kind of strategy can you build on odds movement?

None, as far as horse racing strategies go.

The other part of the answer is an exact betting or trading strategy, and again I have not seen such a strategy built as a general tool where you simply set a set of rules.

I have my app for Betfair, and from my experience nothing that simple works for horse racing. Yes, I have got score-based strategies for football or tennis, but even there, selection processing — when done the way most people do it these days, with machine learning involved — is not simple, as such data-driven strategies rely on data.

What about trading opening prices, is that not classed as a strategy ?

I would agree and disagree. I disagree in that there is a strategy that works but it I agree in the sense that it relies on betting with bookmakers which means very quickly it does not work

Any strategy needs the following: when, what to select, and how to bet or trade.

He has something for the first two stages (when and what), and is limited to one bookmaker only.

If his service offers a prediction of how the price will move, then yes, he could simply build a trading strategy. To automate this whole procedure, as his data are based on Pinnacle odds, he needs to synchronize his data with the user's target bookmaker or exchange; that is maybe not so difficult in horse racing, as horse names should be the same, but not for other sports events.

In horse racing all you need is the race start time and the horse name to find the corresponding market selection on Betfair, for instance.

If you read some of my posts, then yes, I do trade on horses using a different set of data, including the price movement. If he is a software developer he can use my app, as my platform is open to adding any new strategies, and so he can show us whether the really simple information he offers — say, that horse XY's price moved from x to y — can be used to execute a trading strategy on Betfair.

To help you understand what I am talking about: my trading strategy is executed with the parameters shown in Horse Racing – Nigel's Strategy.

The data the strategy reads — or, better said, the data the strategy generates on which selections a trading strategy can be executed — are shown in the Data Context Browser window; the strategy not only selects potential selections/horses for trading but also suggests the target profit.

Sorry Stefan but I think you are wrong if I am understanding you correctly. His predictor bookie is Pinnacle I presume he only sends triggers when other books are lagging. @bettingiscool runs a whole wrath of service based on this widsom of crowds philosophy and itys profitable but yes you get closed quickly

He said: "I have a Telegram bot for notifying you about Pinnacle odds drops."
All you have to do is bet the ones available at the bigger price and given Pinnacles excellent market analysis and willing to accomodate smart bettors there will be more lagging ocurannces than non lagging

Great — so you come to a UK-based forum about horse racing, not knowing that Pinnacle left the UK market in 2014 and does not offer horse racing for the UK at all, and yet somehow you think it has value for us?

Why do you speak about pinnacle? I asked what actions may be somebody need to automate)
