Snooker

So this is the draw for the top half of the qualifiers. Bingham is officially the highest seeded player in the qualifiers at 17th on world rankings.

Colour wise the yellow are 17-32 on official rankings and blue are 33-48. Still 3 amateurs in this part (grey), Wang Xinbo no rating but beaten a 10.4 and 10.6 rated players so not too far behind Bingham on basis of those 2 results.

The list is in draw order, the winner of Bingham match plays winner of Stevens match for a place at the Crucible, and so on. Will post the bottom half on Saturday.

Young Szubarczyk a tougher game against Hossein than so far. Youngest winner of a World Championship match at 15 (now 2 wins) but the bookies have decided not to bet on his games now after betting on the last couple of events he was in!

Slessor v Jiang Jun the standout, last year Slessor lost in the qualifiers to Zhao Xintong 10-8 in probably the best game of the whole event!

Noppon v Walden anoter close game though Noppon a little off form this season. Stan Moody a tough game against Robbie Williams as well.

Highlight of this morning, a new highest break, the rarest break in snooker - a 146 from Oliver Sykes against Lyu Haotian who he leads 5-4 going into tonight.

Young Sykes has made excellent progress this season, he lost the European Amateur Final but gains a place for next years tour from that as the winner, Anton Kazakov had already qualified winning the Under 18 event. An excellent 10-4 win over Liam Graham in the first round and now a much tougher match he is going well in. His efforts have moved up throughout the season, he was 20 in December so a bit of hope for future English players.

For the 4 players regaining their card via the 1 year rankings this is the list of those in contention, those in pink already out. Taylor and Leclerq playing this round still and a win for either of them would mean Kazakov would have to qualify for the Crucible to get a place, unless one of those reach the Crucible. McGuigan will probably have to reach the Crucible as well as needs 2 wins unless players above make the Crucible.

Burden definitely on the list, Zizins would need bad results to miss out.

...... a few well known names still in there slogging away. Matthew Stevens seems to have been there forever and a day. Keeps slogging away but does not seem to get very far. ;)

Commentates on Channel 5 now. Either on there or a Hendry interview admitted he never had the drive to take the game seriously enough and was happy just making a good living. One of the great under achievers, chose fun ahead of success. No problem with that, he seemed happy enough in the interview, but just imagine if Chris Henry had got a hold of him! Surely would have been a World Champion and probably on multiple occasions. Peter Lines been in top form this week but surely not up to Stevens class?

A couple of nail biters yesterday. Fu went 9-5 up on Liam Davies and Davies clawed it back to 1 ball from winning and somehow Fu managed to pot the remaining balls in a few breaks to take it. Davies now needs to get through Q School to return to tour. Not really progressed this season but plenty had to re-qualify (Kyren Wilson and Neil Robertson the 2 most famous).

Jordan Brown went from 6-0 up on Ian Burns into a decider, Burns got a snooker he needed with pink and black on but Brown potted the winning black. Jamie Clarke withdrew ill at 5-0 down to Mertens, he starts a new card next year.

Sam Craigie was docked a frame for a late return after the interval and wanted to discuss but threatened with another deduction so played the break and went for a discussion. Not in his best form but made an excellent clearance to take the final frame of the day on the black and leads 5-4 against amateur Dikme.

These the next 8 games with Brecel v Chang the game of the round.

The final 8 games to find 4 Crucible qualifiers, sees Lisowski and Carter come into the draw. A dream for Lisowski after German amateur Dikme beat Craigie. Dikme played well and helped by the frame award for Craigie being late. Craigie well off the pace though today.

For Carter not easy as could have McGill in the next round.

5 amateurs still in the last 80 in the competition. Though Wang is currently 9-0 down to Bingham and not likely around for long tonight. Hossein is 9-0 up as well against young Szubarczyk.

Only real shock is Peeter Lines leading Stevens 5-4 into tonight. Perhaps he and his son could make the Crucible?

The new tour player of the season gets his rewards! Should pay for the years missed with the ban. Great effort. 5-4 up on Brecel going into 2nd session tomorrow.

Scottish Open runner-up Chang Bingyu fired home a 147 break to lead 2023 Crucible king Luca Brecel 5-4 after the first session of their Halo World Championship Qualifying clash and pocket at least £147,000.

Having already composed a maximum in UK Championship qualifying, Chang earns the £147,000 bonus on offer for making two maximums across snooker's four majors this season.

The 23-year-old is also in line to scoop a further £10,000 for making a 147 in the qualifiers and the £15,000 high break prize for the event. That could potentially take the total payout to £172,000, by far the biggest payday of his career.

There have now been 24 maximums made on the circuit this season, which shatters the previous record of 15. Chang's contribution is the 241st maximum break in snooker history.

A few shocks, those who have already played a game or two are sharp and the new seeds are being caught out early on.

Tomorrow these 8 games are played to completion and the winner reaches the Crucible.

Kowalski beat Joe O'Connor in the biggest shock. Slessor went out again to impressive Jiang Jun. Dave Gilbert had half century breaks in 12 consecutive frames - that is some going!

Stan Moody and Liam Pullen at 19 and 20 representing England well, Pullen beat recent tournament winner Thepchaiyah 10-7 to continue his impressive season.

For Kowalski he needs to win to retain his tour card next season. The rest all guaranteed a tour place.

So these are the last 48 left in with their current world ranking and my rankings on the right, the W column their win/loss record in rankings finals.

The players in green at the bottom have only 1 year ranking points so artificially lw on Official rankings.

The 8 games being played on Wednesday are below. Again winner to the Crucible.

Top efforts yesterday were:
Brecel beat maximum man Chang 10-8 in probably the game of the event so far. Chris Henry seems to have sorted some of Brecel's issues in this game. A tough match against Jones next up.
Gary Wilson an easy win and a fair chance against Xu Si to get some ranking points back.
Carter was 5-2 down and won the next 8 frames with 2 centuries. Now plays McGill in a battle of 2 Crucible veterans. McGill was 9-4 down and 69-0 down to O'Donnell and remarkably won from there!
Highfield knocked out Maguire and a chance against Lines for a lower ranked player to qualify.
Lisowski had a tough game against amateur Dikme but finally scrambled home.

....... pretty good your ranking tables The Hare The Hare quite a lot of the rankings similar to the official ones and a lot very near. Well done there. ;)

Great day for the youngsters yesterday.

Antoni Kowalski the star, needed to win to save his tour card without qualifying and beat Jamie Jones for his Crucible debut and first ever Polish player to make it. Poland a rising force in snooker and he will be the first of many, young 15 year old Szubarczyk also Polish. Best part of his interview was he mentioned he stays with Chris Wakelin in the UK and practises a lot with him. He was very grateful to Chris for helping him and all he has done for him without any reason until they met playing snooker. Chris was watching him yesterday and that is a great shout out for the unpublicised help players give each other. The lad definite promise and at 22 a place in the top 64 is upcoming. If he wins 1 game at the Crucible would make the top 64 now otherwise his points will start on scratch and a 2 year card. The loser in this is Allan Taylor who was 4th on the 1 year list and will now have to requalify in the tour school to get back on. If Kowalski makes the top 64, current 64th Jordan Brown would make the top 4 on the 1 year list and retain his card.

For Britain and Yorkshire the next generation of British snooker saw the 2 youngsters qualify. Liam Pullen, now coached by Chris Henry, which explains his rapid progress this season after dropping off tour last year. At 20 he beat the 2 top Thai players to make the Crucible for the first time.

His county colleague, Stan Moody becomes the first British teenager since Trump in 2007 to make the Crucible. He won a nerve wracker against Jiang Jun who went into Maguire mould thumping the table in the last frame after a miss. What was most impressive was Stan had spent the previous day in hospital and checked himself out against the Doctor's advice! Tonsilitis, says he isn't going back today as he didn't like the place! Great effort and the future of the UK game has moved up a level this week with these 2 making it through and progressing well.

Matthew Stevens beating Bingham was the shock of the day, perhaps revitalised by his commentary work. A previous runner up in 2000 1nd 2005 perhaps the ultimate under achiever in snooker with just 1 ranking title but looked in good shape yesterday.

The draw in order for the Crucible.

Gary Wilson did his best to lose from 7-2 up but got his act together for the last 2 frames to win 10-9.
Performances of the day from Zhang Anda and Jak Jones making 5 centuries each. Brecel after his great win against Chang Bingyu couldn't live with Jones.

Liam Highfield a quick win against Oliver Lines draws the World Champion on Saturday.

On ratings most competitive is Si v Hossein, Vafaei has been impressive this week and as in the last event playing much better than early season and sure to be motivated by war events. Ding a tough game against Crucible veteran Gilbert who also looked motivated. Zhang Anda will give Mark Allen a tough time as well. Selby another who will need to be sharp against a motivatd Jones/ Zhou Yuelong a tough game for Xiao Guodong as well.

BBC at 10am Saturday kick off.

The past Crucible records of the last 32.

Four debutants, Zhang Anda yet to win in 5 attempts, surely he is primed this time? A tough game for Allen. The record seems to be 8 unsuccessful tries.
