Snooker

Xintong wins 10-6 for his 4th ranking title from 4 finals. He moves to 7th on official rankings with a very short period compared to the 2 seasons of others. 3rd on my own ratings still.

Tuesday and Wednsday we have the Champions League Final. Zhang Anda a quick journey to the UK for this, a big boost for him qualifying but be interesting to see what state he is in after the long journey.

Home advantage for Selby and Ford in Leicester.

Withdrawal updates!

Neil Robertson has withdrawn from the World Open with qualifiers this week in Barnsley. It must be school holiday time(!), Ronnie has withdrawn from the Players Championship in Telford at the end of the month and replaced by Higgins.

These are the World Open games, with a Qualifying round as 4 Chinese wildcards come in later. The ones in yellow held over to China.

This is the last qualifiers before the World Championships so 2 months off for the losers who have already exited the Welsh Open.

..... unless I am looking through a glass eye I don't see Ronnie entered in here. Is he absent again from this one? ;)

Selby wins the Champions League for a third year in a row. Some acheivement for a best of 5 frames event, with 2 knock out rounds to win it. This year wasn't the strongest Final but still a great achievement. Home advantage for him a big help, but with no crowds only the short travel and home bed a boost.

Top break was a 146 by Wu Yize, which interestingly in commentary it was mentioned was only the 38th ever 146 in the history of pro snooker. Compared to the 239 maximums that is the true top break to get!

..... he has done very well to get a hat trick of wins in this event. Not easy when it is only the best of five frames. Makes one have to be in the blocks right from the start with no slipups! ;)

Snooker returns on Tuesday with the top 16 players on this year's official ratings taking part in the Players Championship in Telford.

Best of 11 frames with the draw below. The aim this week is apparently to make the top 12 and be on target for the Tour Championship later on. £150,000 to the winner. After this there are 2 more events before the Tour Championship so still a small chance of other players making the list.

This week Channel 5 get the opportunity to show their ability at covering snooker. Last time they tried last year with a small event they kept returning from adverts after the frame had started so surely better now?

These are the top 17 on 1 year rankings, (as Ronnie isn't bothering).

There is a gap of 22,000 points to Gary Wilson next on the list and with 15,ooo guaranteed for this event the gap will require reachinf semi finals and finals in the next 2 events to have a chance of breaking into the top 12.

Today Ashley Carty won the Challenge Tour event in Belgium. There is 1 more of these left and with 10,000 points to the winner only the Top 6 players can top the Tour and gain a place on next year's Professional Tour. The next 18 and qualifiers from World Tours then meet in a knock out next month for 3 more places.

Just thought, Hammad Miah has already made the Tour for next year so only 5 of the top 6 are involved in the qualification for top place or presumably 2nd if Miah wins it.

John Virgo's funeral held in Spain on Valentine's Day as Shaun Murphy pays tribute.

Snooker and BBC icon John Virgo's funeral took place in Spain on Valentine's Day with another memorial service schedule to happen at Sheffield Cathedral come April.

Tributes continue to pour in for John Virgo following his funeral, after he passed away at the age of 79. The snooker legend, who enjoyed an 18-year professional career before becoming a BBC commentator, sadly died on February 4.
He won the UK Championship when he defeated Terry Griffiths and reached the semi-finals of the World Championship in the same year. Other key wins include the 1980 Bombay International, 1980 Pontins Professional and the 1984 Professional Snooker League.
On Saturday, his funeral was held in Spain with a number of friends and snooker compatriots attending. Shaun Murphy was one of them in attendance and took to Instagram to pay tribute to Virgo.

Posting a picture of his memorial card on a beach in Spain, he wrote: "Goodnight JV".

A memorial service will be held back in Sheffield on April 16, with snooker fans encouraged to attend the city's Cathedral to pay their respects.

World champion in 1997, Ken Doherty, and MC Rob Walker arranged the event, which will take place ahead of the second staging of the Champions' Dinner that same evening. "This is an open invitation for anyone who wishes to pay respects to a great man, to come and join the snooker community at Sheffield Cathedral at 1pm on Thursday April 16 for a celebration of John Virgo's life."
Following the sad news of his passing, tributes poured in Virgo from all around the game of snooker. Jason Francis, chairman of World Seniors Snooker, announced Virgo's death in a post on the Snooker Legends account on X.

"JV was doing what he loved to do right up until the end, entertaining everyone," he said. "Such an important person in my life but in our sport in general. ;)
