Snooker

Quarter Finals and best of 9 with intervals tomorrow.

In typical style Maguire and Lisowski go out today. Allen very good against Lisowski, who again showed his mental fragility and some bad luck was followed with all or nothing shots.

Ford was excellent and in line for the unusual double of winning 2 consecutive "ranking" events having never won any before. Noppon another who played really well. Lei Peifan came back from 3-1 down to win the last 3 against Bingham, continuing his great form but tough to beat Foed.

Mark Allen questions what ‘frustrating’ Jack Lisowski is thinking.

Lisowski continues his search for a first ranking title (Picture: Getty Images)
Mark Allen would love to know what Jack Lisowski is thinking when he’s at the table, finding his unpredictable performances frustrating.

Allen beat Lisowski 4-3 at the Scottish Open on Thursday night in an entertaining contest in Edinburgh.

Jackpot had the first chance to win the decider but was unlucky not to be left a nice shot on a red after going into the pack, took on a difficult pot, missed and Allen stepped in to do enough to win.

‘I thought it was a good game, there were a few mistakes, but it was a good game. It’s always a tough match against Jack,’ Allen told Eurosport after the win.
Alan McManus suggested of Lisowski that ‘he goes from a million dollars to not so good in a blink of an eye’ and Allen agreed, saying that it can be frustrating to watch even when he was benefitting from the inconsistency.

‘It’s frustrating at times watching him, it’s obviously great when he’s doing that when you’re playing against him, but as someone who really enjoys watching Jack play, you’d love to know what’s going on in his head,’ said the Pistol.

‘He plays some unbelievable snooker, looks great and then misses one in the balls that you don’t expect at all.’
Asked for the one piece of advice he would give Lisowski as he continues his search for a first ranking title, Allen suggested his thought process at the table is probably not right.

‘I would need to know what he’s thinking out there because his technique looks perfect, so you wonder what goes wrong, you wonder what he’s thinking, is he thinking the correct things?’ Allen said.

‘I think when he breaks that duck he’ll be off and running.’

Lisowski has been to six ranking finals and been a regular face in the world’s top 16, appearing at the Masters five times, but has not been able to make that next jump up to title-winner and truly elite performer.

The 33-year-old doesn’t appear to be getting any closer as his last final was in 2021 and he hasn’t been to a ranking semi-final since October 2023.
Shaun Murphy says Lisowski is unlikely to be bothered by the discussion surrounding why he hasn’t stepped up a level and that is a good thing.

‘I don’t think Jack, from what I know of him, pays that much attention to it all and that would be my advice to him,’ Murphy told Metro. ‘I doubt he reads a lot of coverage, I think between events he keeps himself out of the snooker bubble.

‘It’s almost impossible to believe that someone so gifted might not win. But from what I can see you have to give everyone else a bit of credit, he keeps walking into people playing well.
I think you just can’t get caught up in it, you have to just push on. For Jack it is still a question of when not if, I think when he learns how to win then he might win a lot. I haven’t seen many players with more talent than Jack Lisowski.’
Lisowski said he feels relaxed with his game at the moment, although that means he is not too fussed when he wins or loses matches.

‘Since the World Championships I’ve been enjoying my snooker again,’ he said. ‘It’s not like the end of the world if I lose and I’m not that bothered if I win either so I’m in a good place.

‘I sorted my life out off the table, got happier, sorted some things out. You get older and wiser. I’m feeling good.’ ;)

So 3 Chinese players reach the semi finals. Wu won a great match with Wakelin and showed his great improvement and temperament. That defeat to Trump from 4-0 up in Saudi has kick started his career.

Xiao was very impressive with his safety and wore Brecel down, again to continue his great season, he needs to win the event to get back into the Top 16 in place of Gary Wilson, but if not now he has so few points to lose before the World Championships that he should certainly be in the Top 16 then.

Allen impressed against Noppon, as the last player from the Top 16 remaining and in great shape he will be very hard to beat.

He plays Lei in the semi final and will surely win this. Lei picked up his game against Ford, I watched it closely and can't believe Ford lost it. He should really have won every frame but Lei battled back from behind in most and made a fantastic clearance in the 7th and won the decider in a tense affair.

Best of 11 tomorrow.

..... yes I think one has to go with Mark Allen in this we cannot have Chinese winning can we! ;)

Well when it came down to it the 2 favourites couldn't get home. Wu and Lei showed their excellent resillience and wore down the higher ranked players. Lei from 5-2 down, he is transformed this season as I have mentioned, but this was his first ever quarter final, semi and now Final. AS a similar age to Wu, perhaps they practise together but he has certainly moved on a few steps this year. Nearly would be as big a shock as when Fan Zhengyi won his European Open over O'Sullivan in Milton Keynes,

There have been 3 other all Chinese finals in ranking events - in Shanghai 2013 Ding and Xiao, Germany in 2022 when Yan Bingtao lost 9-0 to Zhao Xintong...and earlier this season in Wuhan when Xiao beat Si. So the first ever in the UK. The game is changing quickly as the Chinese youngsters finally show their potential. There have been a couple of finals between Ding and Fu in 2011 Masters (invitation) and Chengdu in 2013.

Luca Brecel 'cheesed off' and leaves cue in unusual place at Scottish Open.

It was a very unusual gesture from the ex-world champion.

Former world champion Luca Brecel has been accused of trying to make a point after leaving his cue by his chair during his Scottish Open defeat to Xiao Guodong. The ‘Belgian bullet’ made a ranking tournament quarter-final for the first time this season in Edinburgh, only to be hammered 5-1 by the Chinese star.

But afterwards, the major talking point didn’t surround the 29-year-old capitulating after taking the first frame.
Instead, spectators were left baffled by an incident just before the interval, after Guodong had moved into a 3-1 lead.
That followed a marathon frame, which Eurosport commentator Neil Foulds amusingly described as "completely cursed.” A century break eventually settled it the way of the 18th seed, at which point Brecel appeared to make a bizarre gesture.

He deliberately left his cue in the centre of the arena, propped up against the advertising hoardings. He cut a frustrated figure as he stormed to the backstage area, and presumably would have been unable to practice during the break.
Pundit Alan McManus questioned the behaviour, and accused Brecel of trying to make his discontent known. "It’s almost a statement of being a bit cheesed off at the way that the last couple of frames have gone," he said.
“And it’s almost a statement to all of us. Look, things are not going my way and that’s what I think about it. I’m not going to practice, and he’s telling us all. Which is fair thinking, but I don’t know if it’s the best move."

Fellow analyst Jimmy White was equally unimpressed, asking why Brecel didn’t opt to leave his cue in a more discreet place. "Strange place to leave your cue," he said. “If you’re going to leave it out there, you put it under the table. He moved it from where he was sitting. I don’t know."
Brecel has cut a controversial figure this season, having struggled ever since his remarkable Crucible glory in 2023. And his professional tour card for the next campaign remains far from guaranteed, having also stated his intention to compete in an IronMan event in 2028. ;)

Lei wins as Wu struggled and excellent temperament of Lei saw him home. The lowest ranked play6er to win an event for 31 years! Dave Harold the previous winner. I think Fan Zhengyi was a bigger shock as at least Lei has shown some much better form after his return to the tour this season. An excellent effort that puts him up to 43rd on the rankings on just the first year of his card. His game, especially the safety looks top drawer now. I seem to remember he had a good safety before but his potting was the weak link then. A star of the future probably.

On another Chinese front our favourite Zhao Xintong won the 5th Qualifying Tour event, 33 in a row now and with just 2 left is virtually certain to top the rankings and return to the tour next season plus a place at the Crucible qualifying. He was 3-0 down in one match in the quarter final but won the next 4 to take it.

For Lei there is no rest for the wicked! Tomorrow sees the start of the German Open qualifiers in Sheffield and he faces Allan Taylor in a best of 9. It seems half the first qualifiers are tomorrow and the winners meet on Tuesday then the other half is Wednesday and Thursday. With World Open qualifiers after that and the Riyadh Masters for the top 10 taking place it is a busy week before the holiday break.

World Snooker Tour responds after Ding Junhui’s attack on quality of Scottish Open table.

The 37-year-old from Jiangsu had taken to Weibo to vent his frustration about the table after losing a round-of-16 match despite leading 3-1.
Snooker’s world governing body had responded furiously on Sunday to criticism about the match table at the Scottish Open after Chinese superstar Ding Junhui made his feelings public on social media last week.
Ding crashed out in the round of 16 of the tournament on Thursday despite at one point holding a 3-1 lead over former world champion Luca Brecel, but the Belgian won three frames on the trot to turn the tie around.
World snooker are commenting further. ;)

Players are never happy with the table when they lose! At least people like Wakelin never comment on the table state, after all it is the same for both sides. I read that Xiao Guodong was commentating on the Final yesterday and he mentioned his thought s on the table in UK being different to those in China are not to do with the slate but the age of the material used for the cushions. He believed that the cushions in Edinburgh were too hard as they were older, compared to newer tables in China. This might explain some of the differences between the tables in the 2 countries but the pockets do seem more accepting in China and I think Selby's explanation that they are hand made rather than by set gauges on machines is another good reason for table differences.

Lei's game today has been put back to tomorrow and if he wins that his next round on Wednesday. At least some respite for him. Jimmy White left Edinburgh early last night but not helped him as he has lost this morning, his cue tip seemed to come off after a miscue at 3-2 down and he enver recovered.

So I thought I would have a look at how prize money (or ranking points) have progressed in recent years. I looked through my figures and ranked the seasonal ranking points since snooker rankings were altered from points to prize money in the 2014-15 season.

So the current season is the one highlighted on the left. I have taken the selected rankings from those earning the most down to the 128th highest, in some cases these are top up players who have made the money rather than the lowest professionals who enter few contests or none. What we can see is the effect of Covid - the 2019 season is still the highest earner in most ranking positions. Though this looks likely to be exceeded this season now we have more events in China and the mega money event already held in Saudi Arabia. It is also good to see the lower ranked players are starting to make enough to support themselves.

The ranking events left other than for the top 32 are 4 - Germany, Welsh, World Open and the World Championship with a reasonable earning, whoever finishes 96th should add at least another 7,000 to the total which should see all those ranked below 64th earning much more than previously. Still in many cases not enough to survive on but their is a guarantee of £20,000 a season for those who fail to earn that amount which gives some hope to those struggling to make a way in the game or those not up to scratch.

15 Round 2 games today plus the first round for new Champion, Lei Peifan.

Anthony Hamilton who has lost his place in the top 64 to Lei plays against the winner of the all Hong Kong match, Cheung Ka Wai, who beat Marco Fu yesterday. A tough game for Hamilton who is in big danger of losing his tour card. His one ranking event win was in this event in 2017 but age catching up with him now.

Bai Yulu, another victory yesterday has a tougher game against Yuan Sijun.

These the growing list of victories for women in Professional ranking events, including the Shoot Out. Bai is now the to prated woman on my rankings and starting to compete well. She is up to 10,000 ranking points, still needs a lot more to avoid requalifying at the end of next season but at least competing now.

...... still some familiar names in there but Anthony Hamilton who has been around for as long as I can remember is definitely in grave danger of leaving our screens for good. Was good in his ay but obviously age is creeping in and he cannot go on forever. Graeme Dott another who seems to have been around an eternity and getting nowhere fast. Ken Doherty and Anthony McGill who are among others who really need to do something sooner than later, nothing much coming from them in latter days. Stan Moody must still be learning his trade, but seems a slow process in the learning. Dominic Dale another I could mention who must be just scraping a crust, not seen much fireworks from him either.Just about a whole host of also rans and could be replaced by more promising Chinese soon. ;)

Hamilton lost 5-2 to the useful Cheung Ka Wai and as you say it isn't looking good for Hamilton. He is 53 now and I know had eyesight problems last season. Think it is very tough for him to rescue his position now.
Joe Perry in a similar position, he drops out of the top 64 when the next ranking event is played in January in Berlin. Tomorrow he plays Ross Muir or Robbie McGuigan in an attempt to reach Berlin.

Graeme Dott had a great 5-0 win yesterday and if he was to drop off the tour will surely get a wildcard as a past World Champion, maybe Hamilton will as a tour event winner as well?

Doherty has gained his first ranking points of the season and reached Berlin. He hasn't played too many events with illnes and commentary commitments but a couple of good wins this week gets him off the bottom of the official rankings.

McGill another good whitewash win for the Scots. He has had a poor time the last 2 seasons and is clearly much better than his current position. Some off table problems, I don't know what but he should get himself back up the rankings. He likes to change his cue a lot which can't help.

Stan Moore lost in an hour plus deciding frame but still showing much better this season as he learns the game.

Dale won yesterday, an excellent effort. He is retiring at the end of the season whatever happens. Too many aches and pains and decided can't do the required practice anymore. He will still be in the top 64 but resigning after the World Championships. Hoping to get a lot more commentary from Eurosport, I hope so, Dominic, Foulds and McManus are different class to the BBC commentators, maybe Murphy excepted as he is a little controversial!! Dale is on Stephen Hendry's youtube channel this week if you like a good listen.

Lei Peifan crashed back to earth, losing yesterday. Not unexpected after the euphoris of winning on Sunday night. The second round game today

1734520989932.png

The other 16 first round games today and will put up the 2nd round games tomorrow. The top 32 seeds enter the competition in the 3rd round in Berlin at the end of January.

The excitement of the qualifiers I nearly forgot today sees the start of the Saudi money tournament for the top 10 players plus 2 wildcards. Starts in an hour over 7 frames up to the final of 9 frames.

I have no ratings for the wildcards but the games are

Zhang Anda v Ahmed Abdullah Aseeri
Ding Junhui v Abdulraouf Sayegh

So to assume they win this will be the next round later tonight.

Five year ban for snooker player.

Snooker professional Mark King has been suspended from playing for five years for match-fixing.

King was also ordered to pay £68,299.50 in costs after being found guilty of one count of match fixing and one count of providing inside information by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).

The Commission supported the WPBSA case by supplying information including betting data.

John Pierce, Gambling Commission Enforcement Director, said: “All betting customers in Britain should have confidence that bets placed with licensed gambling businesses are on markets that are fair and free from betting-related corruption.

“This is why our Sports Betting Intelligence Unit will always work closely with partners such as the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association to support their sporting integrity investigations and allegations of match fixing.

“Today’s announcement should send a clear message that betting-related corruption in sport will not be tolerated.” ;)

Today a win for Reanne Evans over Iranian Sarkosh, these women wins are getting a little regular now. Joe O'Connor tomorrow a big step up though.

A few shocks today, Shoot out "syar" Liam Graham was 4-0 down very quickly but remarkably came back to win the next 5 and get through to tomorrow.

Murphy missed a fairly easy pink in the first frame and fell apart as he was whitewashed in Riyadh by Ding.

A little late, the games today in Germany/Sheffield and Saudi. All 4-0 wins in Saudi yesterday as Murphy fell apart and Brecel back to some sort of form. Clearly the criticism has finally got to him so good to see him back to best. Tough competition now though.

I was chatting to Ken Doherty on sunday and he told me there are plans to move the world championship to sheffield city hall if the decision is made to redevelop the crucible, from memory i think that's what he said.
