Snooker

Snooker returns tomorrow with the British Open qualifiers taking place in Wigan. Below are the games in draw order, those in green are held over to the main event in Milton Keynes at the end of September. So just the lower ranked players this week. A more random draw of seeds it seems with Allen and O'Sullivan set for a Round 2 meet up in a few weeks.

.... always nice to see tables done neatly. How the mighty has fallen, when you see the state of Stephen Hendry 3.65! I have often said that he needs to give up to save the embarrassment and quit while he is ahead, I see that Jimmy White is still battling away and takes on Anthony Hamilton. Depends on how he plays, may get in but I would fancy Hamilton to take this one. Ricky Walden and Mark Selby could be another one which could go either way if both play up to form. I have not heard how Selby is doing with his mental problems lately, so depends much on his state of mind. Ken Doherty still plodding along there too, think he has had his day so I would not be putting my money on his performance. Ronnie looks to be OK so its eyes down for the initial action. ;)

Hadn't realised Walden v Selby, should be close game as you say. All those Top 16 held over to end of September though. Trump v Jiahui should be interesting!

Hamilton is seill playing decent stuff at times and should be too good for White.

Hendry Knocked Out Of British.

tephen Hendry was left waiting for his first win of the 2022/23 season as he lost 4-1 to Zhang Anda in the qualifying round for the Cazoo British Open.

All results

China’s Zhang goes through to the final stages in Milton Keynes next month, running from September 26 to October 2 – for ticket details click here.

Hendry beat Zhang 10-9 in the first round of the World Championship in their only previous meeting back in 2010, but this time the legendary Scot finished second best.

Breaks of 49 and 59 helped give Zhang a 2-0 lead. Hendry pulled one back with runs of 54 and 43 in frame three, but he didn’t score another point as Zhang rolled in breaks of 78 and 75 to book his place in the random draw for the last 64.

It was a good day for Chinese players as Chen Zifan scored a 4-2 success over Women’s World Champion Mink Nutcharut, while Zhao Jianbo top scored with 105 in a 4-3 defeat of Jackson Page, and Xu Si saw off Himanshu Jain 4-2. ;)

NOTE.
Why dosen't he just give it up and come out of it while he is ahead!

Every result is now just a further embarrassment.;)

Are they your notes Delboy99 Delboy99 ?

I so agree with them.

..... the only notes which are mine are the bold typed lines at the closure of the message. I just think he is halfway to ruining his past reputation and the longer it goes on the more infuriated I become. If he was going to get anywhere, it would have happened by now, he just has nothing in the tank to offer. ;)

..... is that dead or alive? :)
Not sure I’m with you there , first 9 Chinese players won , run was stopped today with one of the 2 Chinese lads losing.
I watched a bit of the match between the lady player from Hong kong and Ken Doherty today, I stopped watching when Doherty was 3-2 up and about 42-19 up in the frame he needed, I turned away to concentrate on the racing and when I see the results she has come back and beaten him, think she was about 9/2 when I looked at the odds earlier(I didn’t bet).

..... not to worry just a bad attempt at a poor joke. Interested in what you had to say about the Chinese contingent. Been a lot of progress since Ding first came on the scene and they seem to be turning these players out like an assembly line. ;)

They seem to be on a mission this season, they have seen what Xintong and Fan did last season and want a bit of the action, all playing well

...... yes these lads don't fool around. They seem to learn the basics easy enough then without a lot of bother jump up a gear or two and before you know it we have another challenger on our hands who will very quickly jump into the limelight. ;)

Hello Delboy99 Delboy99 and O Outlander
Record interest in snooker! Haven't been watching this week but noticed the Chinese continue their early season success as you say. As mentioned in Champions League it seems because they didn't go home to dodge the Quarantine in their own country, they just pracice all the time. No doubt inspired by the success of Xintong, and Fan Zheng amongst others last season. Lu Ning went close in the Champions League and Xintong looked very impressive until cracking against Brecel.

In this British Open they seem to have all the bottom half of the draw so if they are still in form in 6 weeks time they should go close to another success. Make it 12/12 now, we could have retired on the accumulator!

Doherty becomes the second in recent time to lose to a woman in a proper event, ie not Shoot Out. I remember in the World's a few years back he came very close to losing a qualifier, first to 10 against Reanne Evans until she lost the plot under pressure.

Of the 4 women on tour, only Ng On Yee has succeeded, 2 wins, the other against a future Chinese star, Wu Yize, last season. She is very slow and ponderous but clearly coping the best in the class rise. I am sure the This lady, Nutcharut, will improve with experience but they are still a long way from being competitive.

2 days of Qualifying after today and then a proper event in Germany next week to completion.

Ng On-yee qualifies for British Open.

Top Hong Kong snooker player Ng On-yee has proven to be a world-beater once again, defeating 1997 world champion Ken Doherty to qualify for next months’ British Open with the help of an amazing fluke.

The three-time women’s world champion had faced a tough battle against the Welshman in the best-of-seven contest in Wigan.

Ng took the first two frames before Doherty stormed back by taking the next three.

She bounced back to force a final frame, where she was just two pots away from losing when she put in the pink after hitting three banks in a safety attempt.

She readily admitted it was a fluke, but that was enough to earn her first win of the season – and her second since being granted a World Snooker tour card last year.

Ng described her win as one of the best of her career.

She’ll now try to build on her success during the British Open, which takes place in Milton Keynes next month. ;)

Doherty Welshman , anyone who knows anything about Snooker knows he’s not Welsh, they obviously have people writing about sport now who don’t know anything about it

Well a day rest today and then the Circus begins with the first proper ranking event to completion in Furth, Germany this week. In honour of the great Paul Hunter it has now become best of ( and receives a better prize money allowance nowadays.

The problem this year are the ongoing Brexit and covid issues making visas harder. With the First Round mostly completed in the UK already we have 3 withdrawals from the 2nd Round due to visa problems again for Chinese players. It is a lot harder to enter Europe and they need visas for all events if still using their Chinese passports, thought they had help sorting that but still causing problems. You would think World Snooker would deal with visa issues with the country concerned, after all they aren't likely to remain there. Crazy world now.

Then the 4 First round games held over to the venue see Ronnie O'Sullivan return to form. What was to be the great O'Sullivan clash has been replaced with amateur Luke Simmonds as a top up. Apparently Ronnie has tennis elbow, which is no fun. I am surprised he played in the Champions League really. Taken to commentating on Speedway now! He has a varied life.

So these are the 4 remaining First Round and 29 remaining 2nd Round games, the 4 gaps are filled in order - these are the draw order in both Rounds. No rating for Luke Simmonds but he is in his 40s and had a few times on the tour but always lowly ranked.

I believe some games on Eurosport.

Selby crashes out and reigning Champion Fan Zhengyi, (lost all 5 matches since remarkable win in this event last seson). He didn't play in the first event so maybe returned to China and not up to the speed of the other dominant Chinese players?

Updated 4 2nd Round games later today.

Last 32 today as it starts to get competitive. Trump and Kyren Wilson returning to form but plenty of dangers.

..... still some big names left in the draw and a lot of them are capable of producing good performances. Notice thet Jimmy White must have bitten the dust as he is not in the draw here. I saw that Selby too must have had a poor time as he too has gone without much fight. Did not see Ronnie in the initial draw, he must have opted out of playing in this. Mark Williams still there, Ali Carter, Shaun Murphy, Jack Lisowski and Barry Hawkins and obviously Mr.Trump looking good. See Marco Fu still going strong. ;)

Last 16 this morning and afternoon before the Quarters tonight.

Trump below best but not the hardest draw. Another amateur for him today, though good to see Ajaib recover his form after dropping off the tour. Daniel Wells, another amateur plays Chinese future star Si in the top of the draw. Si dropped off the tour last season but seems to have his mind in order now and is surely a future star. Barry Hawkins would appear to be in the best form of the non Chinese but plenty still with chances. Quarter Finals information later on today.

Yes the old faithful still going strong, Williams, Hawkins and Carter playing well. Lisowski well beaten by Zhou but not really up to full form as yet. Fu well below the form of old but at least giving it a go this season and sure to improve as he gets back into the swing of things. Trump still a little rusty and Higginson gave him lots of chances yesterday.
