Snooker

The next 2 days decide the 16 Qualifiers to reach the Crucible, there have been very few shocks do far. Some of the young Chinese players performing best along wit the old established UK players.

I see Ronnie is complaining about elbow problems and pains on the run up to his defence of the title. Seems like a tip for him to win the title!

For some highlights,
Donaldson is playing well and could trouble Day,
Pang should beat Xu Si easily,
Zhou Yuelong another very likely winner,
Higginson needs to win to get his tour card back and I expect a close battle in that game could go all the way.
Mark Davis similarly needs to win to stay on tour, be tough for him though
Stevens and Gilbert probably a highlight of the round, Gilbert in top form though hard to beat
Hawkins should have few problems
Some tight games below that.

...... still looks like a land of lost souls! Some seem to have been around forever yet seem to be frozen in time! Just look at Stephen Maguire he seems to be on a Merry-Go-Round getting absolutely nowhere. Graeme Dott still looks sluggish too, been around for so long he must have a beard down to his toes. Matthew Stephens is he still able to make a crust? Could be me not knowing some of these guys but if one does not hear too much about them, then they are going nowhere. Still a nice table and well presented, gives us plenty of scope for viewing just what everyone is or is not capable of doing. ;)

Stephen Hendry’s coach calls for ‘fire in the belly’ ahead of World Championship qualifiers.

Just wondered if this match had taken place yet and if so, what was the outcome The Hare The Hare ?

Poor Hendry, he made a century in the first frame but then returned to type and easily beaten 10-4, Cahill went on to lose to Zhou Yuelong in the last round.

As for the old stagers. Selt was interviewed after beating Dott yesterday, and said Dott had told him he was struggling with shoulder problems, which can't be good for a snooker player. That would explain his poor season and perhaps age has caught up with him.

Four debutants for The Crucible after yesterday so that is more hopeful. Three new young Chinese whizzkids all fired up for the event
Si Jiahui, the top performing first season professional, currently 69th on official rankings. Given up on the pink and blue hair colouring now but still wears some snazzy suits. He is fast and not bother with safety so the best to watch.
Wu Yize only 19, came from 7-3 down to Chris Wakelin yesterday to win 10-8. I seem to remember he was the first of the professionals to lose to the current batch of women. This his 2nd season as a pro and well inside the top 64, looks to have a big future.
Then, Fan Zhengyi, who went from hardly winning a match to winning a tournament last season. Had done nothing since apart from reaching the Champion Of Champions semis and now back in great shape. The Chinese are always well prepared for this and the UK as they see the big money chances.
Then Jak Jones who dumped Hawkins out last night. I feel sorry for Hawkins, he seems to come under the Day and Allen syndrome of being in top form at the start of the season but now totally lost the form. However Jak Jones is so slow, it requires amazing concentration to play him I am sure. I mean he had a straight pink off it's spot in one frame, still loads of reds on and walked up and down 5 times, over a minute before playing a simple pot. He won it on a free ball in the last frame which has got me to book an opticians appointment! I don't know how it could be a free ball but the referee put the ball next to it and said he couldn't hit. Hawkins had gone in off so Jones could place anywhere in the "D" and I am sure could hit both sides, but there you go, if you miss any game in the Crucible make sure it is the one Jones is in!! Interestingly he is now 1 place behind his brother in the World rankings, they earned exactly the same amount last season and £1,000 les this season so far.
Otherwise standard types Ricky Walden, Matthew Selt, Noppon Saengkham and the worst possible draw for a seed, Anthony McGill made it through. Some great action and tight finishes yesterday.

On Stevens, he is currently 42nd on world rankings and has earned £99,500 in the last 2 seasons, including this. He is playing really well this week but you can't get much tougher than Gilbert at this stage.

The Crucible in draw order. Some perfect draws for scandal and friendships I think!

Sad to see Scott Donaldso withdraw with a recurrence of his covid vaccine induced tremors in his legs. Hopefully he can find a cure and get back to his best but it doesn't look good, he had been in great shape up until yesterday.

Mark Davis loses his place on tour after 32 years, missing the final pink in his match with close friend Joe Perry. Perry was distraught potting the final black to win 10-9. Suspense you can't get in any other sport. Perhaps with 4 of the remaining Top 64 being suspended, WPBSA will allow him to continue without enduring the Qualifying School. 64th is Lu Ning and 63rd Mark King which they were obviously hoping would drift below the cut off to make the sanctions to come easier.

So Ronnie has the fast improving Pang to beat, will need to be at the top of his game on Saturday.
Ding has one of the worst draws possible and expect a close game with Hossein.
Brecel has a shocling record at the Crucible and Walden's current rating is lower than usual so I expect that could be a shock win for Walden
Trump has the worst possible draw against McGill and another possible shock if he isn't tuned up as is usually the case early on.
Lisowski also looks vulnerable in another likely close game.
Murphy has the dream draw. If you remember his complaints a couple of years back when the "Amateur", Si Jiahui beat him in the UK this is a dream for World Snooker and the publicity it will get them. Si is as I said earlier the top new player this season and World Amateur Champion last year. Murphy will ne politer this time round I am sure!
Allen's terrible recent form against inconsistent Fan is another interesting game. Fan was amazing in finishing off his game the other day.
Bingham has to be the most likely to lose of the seeds against Gilbert.
Neil Roibertson having had a terrible season will not be pleased with fast improving Wu Yize but Robertson would be my tip for the event.
Kyren Wilson has a tough game against Day who played much better in his 4 frames yesterday and is current top break of 146.
Gary Wilson gets great friend Slessor in a North East derby, I hadn't realised I had Slessor so low on the rankings, he is much netter and played really well in qualifying. With Ebdon to try and sort his temperament has to have a chance here.
I also think Selby is vulnerable against the gritty Selt, but he should pull through if he can repeat his form of recent weeks, no certainty though!

In China, qualifying for next years' tour, Jiang Jun a 17 year old and the next star? He was World Under 18 Champion at 13 and finally gets a tour place. Amazingly from a great thread on snooker island, probably the World's top women's player was in this event and beat Gao Yang who was knocked out in World Championship qualifying a couple of weeks back. He was jet lagged perhaps but she made a break of 142 which is almost certainly the record break by a woman against a man?

She is well down the women's rankings due to lack of competitions so would need a tweaking of the rules to make it. She was runner up in the recent World Women's Championships so not impossible to find a way to get her in!

The 2nd qualifying event has 2 Tour slots available and is currently being played.

These are the players remaining and their current ranking positions on my scale.

..... still seems odd to see Trump up there ahead of Ronnie by 0.8. I know neither of them have done much lately, but I still view Ronnie ahead of Judd. Also looks odd to see Kyren up there in third spot, don't believe he has truly earned that spot. Neil Robertson had a few flops recently and probably is about right at ten. Lisowski continues to disappoint, surely he is capable of rising above his current position. Thanks for the table, helps keep us abreast of the times. ;)

AS they say form is temporary, class is permanent! Delboy99 Delboy99 over the many years I have been doing the ratings it was a long time before Ronnie was removed from top spot. For very brief times Mark Williams was top when he first got into SightRight. John Higgins had a couple of tournaments at the top but recently Trump has been top more than O'Sullivan though they swap over occasionally. Neil Robertson had a brief spell at the top as well.

The best way of looking at it are players who are lower than they historically should be. So in the case of Kyren Wilson he is at his peak, maybe he is improving a little but it is still a big step for him to reach higher.

Whereas I would say those players too low are Robertson and Selby who are really top 4 players on history. Of those in the World Championship, I would put Slessor in the 40s on his normal form, Selt in the 30s,Day in the 20s lower to middle, Wa;den around 20, Gilbert a little higher, Bingham about 12/13 but I think he is on a downward spiral through age and eye problems.

My best bets of the first round would be Gilbert to beat Bingham and Walden to beat Brecel. I see all matches have the seeds as favourites. At a bigger price McGill to beat Trump as he is match fit so to speak.

When looking there I realised i had left Xintong in who is currently suspended, so I missed David Grace

Shaun Murphy backs snooker to emerge stronger from match-fixing scandal.

An independent investigation into betting-related charges levelled at 10 players is set to start on the second Wednesday of the Championship.

Shaun Murphy insists snooker will emerge stronger from the match-fixing scandal that is threatening to cast a shadow over the World Snooker Championship which gets underway in Sheffield on Saturday.

An independent investigation into betting-related charges levelled at 10 Chinese players, including former UK champion Zhao Xintong and ex-Masters champion Yan Bingtao, is set to start in the second week of the Championship.

All the players, who are currently suspended, face lengthy bans if found guilty of the offences, while another player, Mark King, awaits a separate hearing on similar charges.
Murphy, who is bidding for his first world title since 2005, believes the untimely scheduling can work in his sport’s favour and send a very public message about the extent of its desire to show match-fixing will not be tolerated.

“I think the WPBSA are to be praised for dealing with this matter front and centre and not sweeping it under the carpet,” said Murphy.
“How easy would it have been for snooker to have sat on the information and just waited? I think they deserve praise for bringing this matter to the public’s attention, and for highlighting these players for what they are alleged to have done.

“The fact these hearings are happening during the tournament is something we can use to our advantage.

“We are under the most scrutiny of any sporting event on the planet over the next 17 days and this is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on the way we are dealing with what has been a disastrous situation for the game.
“Dealing with it front and centre in front of the world’s media shows we are trying to do the best we can, and if they are found guilty I hope we never see them again.”

Murphy is due to get his campaign for a second title under way against one of four Chinese debutants, Si Jiahui, in the first round on Wednesday.
The 40-year-old does so as one of the title favourites, having built up to the Crucible with title wins at both the Players’ Championship and the Tour Championship this season. ;)

Ding Junhui: Pressures and dreams of a Chinese snooker star.
China's Ding Junhui is desperate to become snooker's world champion for the first time in his career but will not put himself under any extra pressure to achieve his lifelong dream.

The 35-year-old has not won a ranking event since 2019 and has dropped to 16 in the world rankings, but after recently winning a tournament in Thailand, Ding is in good spirits for the sport's biggest showpiece.

"I really want to win it, but I won't put myself under too much pressure. It's going to destroy my game," he told CGTN. "If anything happens, I'll try to make myself relaxed in the tournament and to win it. Hopefully, I can get some luck. In the sport, you need to get luck sometimes."
Ding, born in Yixing, Wuxi in southern Jiangsu province, has come a long way since exploding onto the world stage aged 18 by winning the 2005 China Open in front of an ecstatic crowd in Beijing.
Within eight months, Ding was lifting the UK Championship trophy for the first time and became a very familiar face on Chinese TV. A 26-episode series called Dragon Ball No 1 was even made about his journey from shy boy to international stardom.
"Winning for the first time that ranking title was amazing," he added. "I was only 18 years old and I never thought I could win one title in my career. It was tough for the first few years. I was 18 and 19 after my first titles and I couldn't close my eyes. The good thing is it made me think I'm a good player."
In an interview at the The Crucible in Sheffield Ding told CGTN Europe, "Now I'm working so hard to bring the tournament back home. I dream to win everytime I play the World Championship."

Ding faces Iranian Hossein Vafaei in the opening round of the World Championship on Sunday and will need five consecutive victories at The Crucible theater to be crowned world champion. How would he feel if he finally got his hands on the famous trophy?

"It's very exciting. I think the pressure is always with me and if I were to win one day, I think I would have a very good sleep!" ;)

Wild life of snooker icon 'Big Bill' Werbeniuk who would drink 40 to 50 pints a day.

‘Big Bill’ Werbeniuk lived the rock n roll lifestyle everyday as the notorious snooker pro averaged between 40 and 50 pints of lager a day and weighed in at 280lbs.
Notorious snooker pro ‘Big Bill’ Werbeniuk drank between 40 and 50 pints of lager a day and weighed 280 pounds.

Werbeniuk was a four-time quarter-finalist in the Embassy World Championships at the Crucible, in a largely forgettable career that spanned from 1973 until 1992, but it was legendary figure's shenanigans that makes him a cult hero of the sport.
‘Big Bill’ was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1947, he began playing snooker as a child and spent his early years in the sport travelling North America and winning money by playing in snooker tournaments, which is where his love for booze stemmed from.

During his hay day, Werbeniuk would consume upwards of 40 pints of beer a day, with him often having six pints before every game and limited himself to just one pint per frame.

Can you remember Werbeniuk’s legendary character? Let us know in the comments section below
Werbeniuk’s incredible super human ability to handle the beers was due to him suffering from hypoglycemia, a condition that means the body is able to burn off alcohol and sugar extremely quickly, allowing him to drink places dry daily.

The Canadian’s drinking was actually encouraged by doctors, due to Werbeniuk suffering from a familial benign essential tumour.
Although his level of alcohol consumption perhaps wouldn’t have been how the doctors would’ve expected ‘Big Bill’ to react to their green light, with Werbeniuk supposedly drinking 76 cans of lager during a game against John Spencer in the 1970s as his pro career began.
Werbeniuk’s drinking habits did eventually catch up with him, ‘Big Bill’ died of heart failure in January 2003, after he previously had begun to take medication to help his heart cope with the incredible amount of alcohol he consumed.
‘Big Bill’ reached a maximum world ranking of 8th in 1983 and 1984 but his legacy in the game goes far beyond his achievements with the cue, with more bewilderment around his legendary ability to handle his drink. ;)

How amazing is snooker. For years Jak Jones has been one of the slowest players on the Tour, as mentioned earlier. In the Qualifiers he was ridiculously slow, easy shots were taking up to a minute. I watched a couple of his games. Now he turns up at The Crucible for the first time and he suddenly starts to play like a speed player! Maybe all the pressure is off, he has made his record payday but the change in style is amazing. Perhaps this will start his career and he will up the pace permanently.

..... maybe had a doze of Ants in his pants! That would make him move quicker. ;)

my World Championship view so far:

O'Sullivan scrambled through with his latest illness and injury concerns. Pang took too long to get going and he had few worries. Will need to up the pace for the next round.
Hossein Vafaei was average yesterday but immense today. The second best display of the tournament so far and Ding had no chance. I liked his interview when asked about Ronnie game next and his constant moaning of illnesses. O'Sullivan will need a top display to beat him.
Brecel finally had his first Crucible win after scrambling home in a tough game against Walden. Will surely help him to get over that for his next game.
Williams or Robertson will face him next. Williams played reasonably well but a little below his best and I expect will improve today.
Allen is playing as he was early season, very slow and average then somehow winning the events later on! Fan got his act together late on and it could get interesting tonight.
Bingham proved me wrong with a top display that broke Gilbert's heart and if he does face Allen will be a tough nut to crack.
Jak Jones as mentioned surpassed himself and broke Carter's heart. His speed was around 27 seconds a shot, his average for the year is 29 so only a little quicker. Maybe being closer to the table but he looked a lit more fluent than last week in qualifying.
Neil Robertson was amazing. The best display of snooker imaginable. Surely too good for Jones in the next round. Very confident in his interview, but I am sure we have been here before with RObertson in the WOrld's. Still hard to see him being beaten at his best and after such a poor season.

Nearly half way through the first round now and been some great stuff especially Neil RObertson and Hossein.

Don’t know how you picked out Robertson as a potential winner, been useless all season but you seem to have predicted a turnaround at the right time, he was excellent.
Hossein is a player I’ve been keeping and eye on, he has the game in there , no doubt about it.
Still think Murphy will be hard to beat and Selby loves long matches and back in form danger to all.

World Snooker Championship 2023: Alan McManus and Jimmy White react to Hossein Vafaei’s broadside on Ronnie O’Sullivan.

Jimmy White and Alan McManus have given their reaction to Hossein Vafaei’s broadside on Ronnie O’Sullivan, after the Iranian said he wanted to “shut” the mouth of the seven-time world champion. McManus thinks Vafaei is playing a “dangerous game”.
Hossein Vafaei has come under scrutiny after he promised to "shut" Ronnie O'Sullivan's mouth ahead of their fixture at the World Snooker Championships. The pair's second round head-to-head at the Crucible has left snooker fans eager to see them face off on Friday.

But Jimmy White, who has won three seniors world titles, says he's not a fan of Vafaei's trash-talking ahead of the match, insisting that the Iranian should "do his talking on the table" instead.
Their match comes just a year after Vafaei told O'Sullivan to retire for being "disrespectful". The Rocket has since warned his snooker rivals to "not rattle my cage", following his opening round victory on Saturday.

Ahead of their grudge match, White told Eurosport: "He’s obviously not happy with O’Sullivan. I don't think O’Sullivan will rise to it. I think he just focus on his game but there seems to be a bit of needle there for sure. I think he's too professional, is Ronnie. He will just get on with his job.

"I don't think there's any animosity between Ronnie and Hossein, I think it's just red tops talking. I don't think [O’Sullivan] will use any of this press or this sort of banter in any way, shape or form. If Hossein thinks it can help him, then so be it, but it could reverse on Hossein. So, I'd rather him just do his talking on the table. It's all nonsense to me."
Former Masters champion Alan McManus said he was left "bewildered" by Vafaei's comments on Monday. Suggesting that something may have gone on in the background, he added: "I'm thinking back to a few years ago when I think Hossein was spending a lot of time in the south.
"I think Ronnie sort of took him under his wing, not in a big way, but he was friendly with him - Ronnie's friendly with pretty much everyone on the circuit as far as I've ever seen and maybe that’s changed."

Adding further fuel to the fire, Vafaei recently claimed that the seven-time world champion is no longer his hero and is a 'nice person... when he's asleep'. The last meeting between the pair was 18 months ago in the German Masters when O’Sullivan was whitewashed 5-0.
Security for their eagerly anticipated fixture may be on high alert, too, especially after scenes that played out on Monday evening at the Crucible.

Snooker became the latest sporting event to be disrupted by protesters after a Just Stop Oil activist poured a packet of orange powder paint over a table. Former world champion Stephen Hendry, on commentary duties for the BBC, said: "I have never seen that before at a snooker event. It’s a first. It caught us all by surprise."

Their protest comes just two days after 118 animal rights protesters were arrested after disrupting the Grand National start. ;)

Mark Williams reckons just five players have good World Championship chances.

Mark Williams reckons only five players are in genuine contention for the World Championship title this year, not expecting a surprise package at the Crucible.

After an unpredictable season which has seen big names struggle and surprise winners of ranking titles, this year’s World Championship has been touted as an open affair.

However, the three-time champion is not on board with that point of view, believing it will be one of the usual contenders who will be lifting the trophy come the end of the final.

‘Load of rubbish,’ Williams told Metro.co.uk on the idea of an open World Championship race ahead of the tournament. ‘There’s only maybe five or six players who can win the tournament, it’s very rare an outsider comes through and wins it.
‘It’s going to be one of five names at the end of the 17 days. They say it’s the most open tournament every year I come here, it’s the most open for the last 20 years! It’s not, it’s the same ones.

‘I wouldn’t put my name in that five or six, if I’m totally honest. It’s Ronnie [O’Sullivan], [John] Higgins, [Judd] Trump, [Neil] Robertson and [Mark] Selby.’

Williams himself won his third world title in 2018 and was fantastic in Sheffield last year as he reached the semi-finals, only missing out on the final in a deciding frame loss to Trump.

Asked why he wouldn’t include himself among the contenders, he said: ‘I’ve got a better record than probably most of them, but they’re the five names, I see one of them winning it.

‘Anyone can win it, of course, but the fact is it’s very probably going to be one of those five names that do year after year. Over the last 10 years it’s the same winners isn’t it? And the 10 years before that, and in the 90s.’

Williams looked good in his 10-5 opening round win over Jimmy Robertson and will be glad to be at the Crucible rather than at his club back in Wales, where he has been getting a lot of stick.

His practice partner and young protégé Jackson Page beat the Welsh Potting Machine at the recent WST Classic and is not letting him forget about it.

‘I’ve only been in a handful of times, but let’s just say I’ve had some s**t off the boys in the club,’ he said. ‘When I walked in he shouted over, “Oh! Here comes the second best player in the club!”
‘I like it. I don’t care when they take the p**s out of me, all I do is take the mickey out of people and take it back, have a laugh. It was absolutely brutal from me when I beat him last year [at the World Championship], so I’ve got to take it on the chin now.

‘That’s what it was like when I was 14, 15 in the club, everyone taking the mickey, but it toughened me up, you need it. You wouldn’t believe the things I was getting called from the people at the bar, and they were laughing, but I was laughing.

‘In this day and age you’d probably get in trouble for it, but I loved all of it. 13 years old, people saying, “you’re s**t, you’ll never do anything” and just laughing at them. Just the old fellas in a real rowdy club, maybe youngsters have it too easy these days.’
On Page, Williams reckons he has the talent to be picking up more wins and climbing the rankings towards the top.

‘He’s the only youngster I’ve seen out there that when I watch, he’s so natural and fast, he can fill a void for youngsters watching,’ he said of the 21-year-old. ‘He can make a ton in four minutes, two tons in 10 minutes. I think he’s the only youngster who can do it, some might be doing a bit better, but they’re not as easy on the eye as he is.’

The Welsh Potting Machine is a great practice partner and advisor to have in your corner as a young player, even if he has a blunt style of motivation.

‘I did ring him up when he was 6-3 down to Hossein [Vafaei, in World Championship qualifying] and said, look you’re playing like an absolute donkey here, but you’re still in it at 6-3, don’t give up, keep going. If you win the session 3-1, the pressure is on him.

‘Stuff like that can help, but it didn’t help because he lost 10-6.’ ;)

An update for 2nd Round as there are still 3games to complete tomorrow. Will amend tomorrow night.

O'Sullivan surely fired up after Hossein taunitong.
Brecel and Williams I think will be closer than the ratings but still expect Williams to win.
McGill must fancy his chances against Lisowski who struggled today.
Allens truggled and Bingham has to be fancied to overturn him after impressive display against Gilbert.
Robertson is much shorter with he bookies but playing to a higher level than his current rating and surely hard to beat here.
Kyren Wilson was very impressive today and should be a cracker against higgins.

Barry Hearn relishing Ronnie O’Sullivan and Hossein Vafaei’s ‘crash, bang, wallop’ rivalry

Barry Hearn is pleased that snooker fans are getting a bit of the ‘crash, bang, wallop’ rivalry of other sports in the form of the feud between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Hossein Vafaei.

The Rocket and the Prince of Persia meet in the second round at the Crucible, starting on Friday, and it looks set to be a spicy affair.

Vafaei began the beef ahead of last year’s World Championship when he said O’Sullivan should retire because he is bad for snooker.

It appeared that the rivalry had simmered down over the last year, but the world champion mentioned the comments after his first round win and warned other players not to ‘rattle his cage’.
The Iranian has not taken his advice and instead has chosen to give his cage a serious rattling, saying O’Sullivan is a ‘nice person when he’s asleep’ and claimed the Rocket’s illness during round one was just an excuse.

It has made the last 16 clash must-see television over three sessions from Friday to Sunday and, unsurprisingly, Matchroom Sport president Hearn is all for it.

‘Listen, I love a good show, I love it,’ he said. ‘There are boundaries obviously, of course.
‘Every sport has got its own personality and snooker isn’t really a crash, bang, wallop, “I’m going to whack you” type sport. Pool is much more crash, bang, wallop. Darts is. Boxing is boxing, which can be fabulous and can be scurrilous.

‘But I think it’s a bit of fun for all our snooker fans to have a little edge into that world of one-to-one confrontation that seems to mean something more than just a second round match in the World Championships.

‘There’s a little bit of needle, a little bit of pride and they’ll both by trying their absolute nuts off.’
The rivalry has been discussed across the Hearn family, with Barry’s son Eddie saying he would be relishing the war of words in the boxing world.

‘I was talking about it with Eddie yesterday, said Barry. ‘He said, “if this was a boxing match I would be smashing this up! Face-offs, all sorts of stuff.” So we’ll see.’

The match begins on Friday afternoon and continues in the Saturday afternoon session, finishing on Sunday morning. ;)
