Punchestown Festival

I'm beginning by saying I'm fuming Gaelic Warrior isn't running in the Punchestown Gold Cup. I put £150 E/W on Gaelic Warrior at 15/2 at Aintree, in the Bowl. This is a profit of £1,450. There was a rule 4. They gave me £1,053.69.

Gaelic Warrior in the Punchestown Gold Cup was 4/1. I was thinking put £100 at 4/1 as on my ratings, is going to win. This covers the amount of that rule 4 also.

It seems that Gaelic Warrior ran at Sandown. No point in betting at 5/6.

Gaelic Warrior was going to win and I wanted to see this proven. Because of greed and trainers championship, this never happened.

Fuming.

I'm being honest and I hope that trainer has a bad week.

My runner in Punchestown Gold Cup is Monty's Star 9/1. Run 141 1/2 in Irish Gold Cup behind Galopin Des Champs.

Galopin Des Champs is inconvenienced here, as right handed runs 141 1/2 instead of 148 1/2.

Champion Chase.

Solness is top rated 161 and if taking to Punchestown unlike Cheltenham, wins. I put £100 at 11/1.

Cover bet is Marine Nationale, rating 156 1/2. Beaten twice by Solness but if Solness isn't taking to course, Marine Nationale wins like Cheltenham. I put £150 at 2/1.

I'm putting my money where my mouth is Solness and Marine Nationale.

Surprised there is not a Punchestown thread here. Sorry to be so late putting this here.

Marine Nationale won easy, beating Captain Guinness. Solness behind Captain Guinness again, like Cheltenham, so as Captain Guinness finished 2nd and useful yardstick and athlete Captain Guinness is, I'm taking the line from Captain Guinness and Solness has run much like Cheltenham again, regarding finishing positions.

Won £300 on Marine Nationale. Lost £100 on Solness. Profit £200. Very pleased.

Punchestown is a carve up this year, Mullins stars are needing a rest but his ego means he is running horses that should be in a field.
Inothewayurthinkin wins the Gold Cup and is off for a summers rest, good training from Cromwell, whereas Mullins keeps going to the well. His stars were so flat yesterday but because owners want him to train their horses, he has many chances.
Gigginstown were the same a few years ago, it doesn't work. Once you break a horse that is used to winning, they don't often come back.

Gaelic Warrior only run at Sandown cos of the bloke's ego. I wonder if he could win a handicap hurdle at Sedgefield with a horse rated in the 70s.

Punchestown Gold Cup preview

Spillane's Tower 143 1/4. Run this in John Durkan chase but run terrible since. Jumped bad last time. Top rated but not sure about taking to quicker pace than run in novice chases. Run like that in John Durkan chase but not sure regarding Kempton run. Think he is jumping poorly here, but slower pace of a 4 horse race a possible help.

Monty's Star 141 1/2. Run this in Irish Gold Cup. Three quarters of a length in rear of Spillane's Tower in novice chase, last Punchestown festival.

Galopin Des Champs. Capable of 148 1/2 but right handed runs 141 1/2.

Banbridge 137 1/2. Effective at 2 miles or 3 miles. Not took Cheltenham course but runs alright here. Last of 4 runners.

Just looked at race result. Galopin Des Champs won by 22 lengths. I think those 3 other horses need a rest. They are knackered. Spillane's Tower though might not be as capable of jumping in this kind of race, rather than a novice chase.

This is my favourite race at the Punchestown Festival. The La Touche Cup, a cross country race. I like the cross country races. They seem to have specialists for these races, e.g. Singing Banjo.

I'm backing a runner that took this race a couple of years ago. Singing Banjo took this race last Punchestown Festival at 28/1, following up from his 2021 win at 33/1. I'm hoping this runner replicates this. I put £5 E/W Vital Island 12/1. This yard also had the one two, in the cross country race on Tuesday.

I also put £5 E/W Subset 100/1. Course winner.

On form with Vital Island, held in 3 races. One at Punchestown and two at Lingstown.

Form here.

Beaten 18 and a half lengths at level weights behind Vital Island, Lingstown, 9th March 2025.

Beaten 17 and a half lengths by Vital Island, Lingstown, 12th March 2023.

Beaten 14 lengths by Vital Island, Subset being 3rd and Vital Island being 2nd, but Vital Island conceding 5lb at Punchestown, April 25th, 2023. After adjusting at 1lb a length, Vital Island would have been in front of Subset, by 19 lengths at level weights.

So Vital Island has met 3 times with Subset in these races and finished 18 and a half lengths in front of Subset, the last encounter. Vital Island finished 17 and a half lengths in front of Subset, another encounter.

The race at Punchestown after adjusting at 1lb a length, Vital Island would be 19 lengths in front of Subset.

Yard excel, in this kind of race. They have took 2 of the last 5 runnings.

Subset to run well. Has E/W chance.

I normally do a thread for each big festival, I've just been busy with work and gardening atm, but still been betting (had two really good Saturdays in a row, fair bit up for the last month so happy and it's been quite good racing the last two weeks).

I put a UK horses doubles bet on Tuesday, I put all the UK horses in @ 15:05 and all the UK horses in @ 15:40 and played £1 E/W doubles, I cheered the horses home and thought I'd hit a 50/1 and 11/1 double, only, somehow I missed Buy Some Time (R. Mike Smith) in my bet so didn't get the 50/1 winner @ 15:05, I was gutted. I did get a good return from my Mullins bet though, although, I had to put 15 horses in but good job I did because his 3rd string horses won two races.

My big double today is Declan Queally - Mozzies Sister 10/1 @ 16:50 + Rocky's Diamond 11/1 @ 18:00 (I try to always have at least 1 big double/trixie that doesn't have any Mullins, Elliot, Cromwell etc. horses in it).

I've also got Jonjo O'Neill x3 horses, Anthony Honey Ball x2 horses and Fergal O'Brien x2 horses, just to cover the UK raiders.

Good luck for today.

I have last years winner and current fav Teahupoo, top rated. Winners from the previous year have a 5 out of 11 (45.5%) strike. Current 2nd fav Hiddenvalley Lake is my 2nd top rated as well. So win bets on both

Asterion Forlonge and Winter Fog are two I fancy for place bets, Asterion Forlonge was 2nd last year and Winter Fog was 3rd in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle Stakes, both of which provide good place stats in this race.

Brookie is too big to ignore in the 5.25. There is a tenuous line of form from his last race in the Grade 1 Maghull where he finished 11ls in front of Touch Me Not when second to Kaif De Berlais.
In the Irish Arke Touch Me Not was 9ls behind Majborough giving that horse 2lbs.
Touch Me Not's Cheltenham form in the Arkle is nothing to go overboard about, yes he was beaten some 54ls, Majborough and Only By Night were 53ls in front of him, but he has a dislike of stiff tracks.
Brookie should have the beating of Rubaud on a line through Leau De Saud whilst Jeannot Lapin was 9ls behind Touch Me Not at Leopardstown.
Jesse Evans isn't good enough.

Mullins has won the last nine renewals of this and 10 of the last 11. But, Majborough does make mistakes and he is only a 5yo. Le Roi MIguel won this as a 5yo in 2003 and only ten have tried. Mullins has saddled three, all failed.
So that gives me some hope and an each way bet with two and three places plus betting without Majborough is the way Im going.
