i try to look at the whole card at each meeting before deciding were to do the placepot, as you say getting the favourites unplaced is the secret to a good payout but when to leave them out is the question.for me playing the placepot is always about thinking " what if ? " . if the Favs are placed in 3 or 4 of the races the Pot will pay poorly. I have not looked at the card @ Southwell in depth but it has a quite nice shape about it but I would be concerned that the races are not very competitive.
The Racing Post betting forecast is a really good guide.
