JIB Ratings

VP is in my top three rated for the 19.30 and all showing some kind of improvement lately

The trainer has done well with getting 10lb weight relief for Hauteluce in this race, leaving it 2lb to find with VP and draws it level with WM.

I would have preferred more AW form to look at with VP than just the one run.

Good luck with it.

Sometimes gut feelings are the best barometer of wether to bet or not. VP finished last

Doncaster 12.55 King Of Light proves he can handle the deep, exhausting mud over 5f, whereas the heavy rain directly plays against the preferrences of several other fancied runners. His ability to blow the start will always be a concern but with a predicted collapse of pace and a slow motion finish in prospect it may not matter here. Ground out his latest win humping 9.10 in heavy ground at Haydock before a crack at listed company at Ascot. Back in calmer waters here will be staying on at the end hopefully for the win

Doncaster 3.19 Desperate Dan, is this a case of textbook race planning. Underfoot conditions have turned out perfect. Won this race last year carrying same weight off same mark. Blinkers go on for the first time, the trainer obviously believes they will help here.

Happy with the slow progress I think I am making on the flat but as this season draws to a close I find myself staring at unchartered waters over the jumps. I did try the first proper meeting at Chepstow earlier this year with mixed results. I have rated the handicap races at Cheltenham today

No additional filters applied at moment and seem to favour horses at head of market. Work in progress over coming months

Not the best of days with a 3rd and another last place. On review I cannot see anything wrong with the figures, As for the NH figures, total disaster, plenty of work needed there, 5 races of interest for monday, may take a look at Aintree tomorrow if it gets the go ahead with a few filters added.

Assuming Aintree bets the go ahead.

12.40

Brookside is top rated and has a fair chance here, the extra distance and higher OR are the two key questions. He arrives after an impressive nine-length victory at Worcester and is relatively unexposed as a handicapper but today's race is over three miles, around five furlongs farther than his latest win. His third at Haydock over 3m½f is encouraging, but he has yet to prove he can perform at this distance. Latest win was off 110, but now has a 9lb increase to overcome but overall form looks progressive.

Western Monkey has obvious claims, he is a promising horse who could be well treated on his handicap debut. He won his only hurdle start over three miles at Haydock in December 2025, beating the runner-up by 4½ lengths. Under foot conditions look suitable based on his previous win, but he has been off the track since December 2025. That long absence and his lack of experience in a 13-runner handicap are genuine unknowns.

Molto Bene with some bookmakers paying extra places it may be worth looking for some each way selections, one such horse would appear to be Molto Bene, her apparent consistency, she has finished second on each of her last four chase starts, including a narrow defeat at Market Rasen in April look good on paper but doubts arise if she can transate that to the race today. Her record when returning from a break is encouraging, and she has won over hurdles and fences at distances up to three miles, so stamina is proven. Probably play safe and take the EW bet here with most of the bookies paying 4 places.

Kempton 5.45 Port Road
This course is clearly the horse's preferred venue. It has run here the majority of its career, scoring two victories (7 Jan 26 over 1m off OR 73, and 20 Aug 25 over 1m off OR 73) and hitting the frame multiple times. Appears to struggle away from the AW. All three recorded career wins came within the rating band of 73 -76. Once the horse's rating climbs to 77 or above, it routinely struggles to win. On its last run it finished 5th but was only beaten 3.8 lengths, resulting in a small drop to 74 meaning it is currently sitting right back down at a highly competitive, winnable mark.
He is generally ridden patiently, often coming from midfield or the rear. A recurring note in its comments is that it "weakened towards finish," "no extra final 110yds," or "soon faded." is a concern. It appears to possess a good turn of foot from the 2f mark to the 1f mark, but its stamina can flatten out late if the pace has been relentless. Would suggest he is best at 7f (if there is a fast pace to aim at) or a steadily-run 1m. Didn't get the ideal ride last time, with better positioning can see a better effort here.

Kempton 6.45 Fallacious Promise
This 3-year-old gelding is an All-Weather specialist and a rapid improver that has seen his rating skyrocket from 47 up to 77. Luke Morris has been the key to unlocking this horse's potential, steering him through a highly progressive campaign. Not speedy enough for sprint distances and stamina streched beyond a mile, 8f seems to be his trip for now. The synthetic, surface of the track at Kempton allows him to launch his late finishes safely without dealing with turf irregularities. With plenty of pace expected here he can track the leaders and finish fast and late.

Hi,

Im new to the forum I see you are using ratings and noticed a comment about pace prediction - I might have something that may come in handy if you did want to use a guide to factor pace prediction .

It is a telegram bot I am currently using to paper trade and track my personal method but it would have more handy implications a quick look at what the pace map might look like - I am able to backtest the accuracy

I could share more if theres any intrest ? (Im not selling anything, genuinely just want to share something if its useful . You can find this style of pace map elsewhere its not revolutionary but it is easy & quick to use imo .

As I say im using it for my personal method looking at front runners so I only have a summary of how good/bad it is as a guide for front runners - I know how it is when introducing something new into a method so I get that now might not be the best time to tinker ...

I like your writings !

trecelyn trecelyn and Chesham Chesham I was inspired by your JIB strategy, and by what you shared here, including Chesham's explanation of JIB, so I implemented my own strategy.

Well, I do not have all the required data you may use, so my strategy can be described as follows: "The market prices the figures; this strategy prices the company — a horse that has already run to a level above the field it meets today, and has been beaten by better fields than this one, is worth backing while its form figures still look ordinary. Winning is deliberately not the signal; JIB's essence is that a horse beaten in stronger company is a better horse than the same form line in weaker company."

Does that make sense at all?

Makes perfect sense to me, I look at races before there is a live market formed as I have found in the past that has influenced my final selection, so I find horses that are have better form in the bank that that first looks and subsequently bigger odds.

It is not strictly JIB but my take on it

Hi StefanBelo StefanBelo

Jib was in Effect keep a JiB Handicap class of race and jib Rating earned. Kept a sort of data base for each horse . The. Waited until one from his data base was placed in a race class it could win in and had the Jib Handicap rating to back that up

He was using the average OR from the first five in the Betting forecast to work out the Class of Race about to be run

Chesham Chesham I had no time to read all the posts, so Copilot made a summary, and from that I implemented code with the data I have. So Copilot seems to have got it right — as its summary, which is what you replied, confirms.

trecelyn trecelyn Yes, that's right. For Galway, Stumptown was the market's 6th favourite by CRR, the strategy I named, inspired by JIB, rated it 1st.

Hi StefanBelo StefanBelo

On Chase form a no brainer and excellent spot by you. Today was a Hurdle Race Class 110 and ran off old Hurdle Mark I stead of a much higher chase mark

The Race Class Below is not JIB Class but another type of Class measurement, but I’m sure that if you are using Jib for Race Class it will still have Stumptown coming out well

Hi StefanBelo StefanBelo
A few years ago ArkRoyal ArkRoyal produced Class Ratings Sheets on the Inner Sanctum

The Jib Ratings were used as a Bolt ON Rating to give a sort of consensus with the other ratings , rather than a stand alone rating

In the example below Jib Rating was better than the Jib Class of the race about to be run and its corresponding Jib class where the Rating was earned was also higher than the race about to be run .

I don’t think it is a Rating that can be used as a stand alone and needs an intuitive approach when applying it to races yet to be run.

Example

On the Inner Sanctum the Class Sheets are posted each night by ArkRoyal ArkRoyal

These contain various Ratings

The example below was not a bet for me, but explains how the various ratings can come together and they are totally different methods of rating

The Chesham Class Ratings sheet first. Here Virginia Plane is top rated on adjusted class ratings 69.5 and down in class 5.19

View attachment 99861
Next Tab on the Class Sheets is the Form Sheet

TBB HC is the TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother Handicap Rating which is converted from his Speed Figures and is on the same scale as the BHA Ratings

the TBB HC is 78 and the horse has a BHA Rating of 75, so is 3 Lb well in.

To the right is the JIB Class Rtings and jib Rating

We can see runs back the horse won a Jub Class 71 and of course a Jib Rating of 71

LTO went up in class Jib class 74 and a Jib rating of 73 an improvement from 2nd LTO

Todays Jib Class is 68 , down in claSS and won a Higher class 2 runs back and improved Jib Rating for an even higher class . Also note that LTO was an improvement on TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother figs too

Ratings are fine but they only take you so far, its how you use them is the key. I enjoy rating races and potentially finding one at a price that has been overlooked by the bookies and offered at an inflated price.
However ratings can point to things which on closer scrutiny are not really there and thats where the hard work begins. How far back do you take the rating from? Similar distance? What about the going? The rating stands up but the stable are woefully out of form, track, pace and draw are negatives.
All these things need to be considered, the only concrete rule I have at the moment which many probably wont agree with is that I will not take a rating gained in a non handicap into an handicap. Too many times I have been caught out with what looks like a good listed performance and using that in a future race. It unbalances the feel of the race and seldom get placed never mind wins.
I am sure others have suggestions for how they use ratings and thats what makes good forums, healthy debate. We will not agree on everything but may find common ground somewhere.
Back to my JIB take on things, I use the RPR class rating that TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother has posted up as a secondary check, that throws out quite a few false ratings. It works for me and is another reason I post here, more knowledgeable people sharing their ideas to help others in finding their way.

Catt 2.40

Top rated is Miraculous but is not backed up by the secondary figure so I'm skeptical of its chances. Looking beyhond that brings in the top rated stablemate's Manila Scouse plus Azure Zain. Azure Zain is 0-4 on soft but my final check is always RPR and they show 2 of its best performances were on soft going. Previously I would have baulked at the record on soft going but by using the RPR it shows me something else. Trainer form is just above the average for the last year so no concerns there. The price of 9-1 looks fair and thats where my money goes today

Azure Zain blew the start and was never in the race thereafter, not sure if its my imagination or not or its better racing coverage but when I
started betting back in the day, I cannot recall so many horses that got a poor start and ruining their chances before the race was run. Is it a poorer standard of jockeyship? Horses are not trained enough in stalls at home? Some skullduggery by connections? Or my poor memory of past events? Possibly a combination of all 4, I am starting of thinking of dropping sprints from my workload.

Kempton 7.45
Forever Penywern starts the ball rolling. Has the figures to take a hand but its continued capitulating at Kempton is a concern, has downed tools twice now when involved in a finish over this stiff track and for that reason I will give it a miss today.
Thinthread's rating comes from its stable debut over this course aligned with a drop of 8lb, starting to look well handicapped. Stamina today is questioned, so im asking myself, is this a genuine attempt at winning or a run where it wont stay and get a few more lbs of its back for another day, One of the imponderabkes of racing.
That brings me to Winged One. The figures point to a big run off a decreasing mark but the odds are quite restrictive. There are a couple more just below these three mentioned and for that reason plus the odds on offer this race will be consigned to the research area for me.

Nottingham 3.16
Im probably going to regret playing in this one and will have to go into hiding when this one gets beaten. ASHNAK is closely rated with Maxident but the odds are almost 3 times higher. I am basing this on the jockey tracking the pace and playing late over this distance and on the prevailing going. The price just makes me want to have a little interest, watch now as it drifts to double the odds and gets pulled up, but that's racing for you.
