How to start

Thanks Chesham not sure about joining anything though till I have more of an idea what I am doing, looking at HRB not sure I would know how to use it, is it worth while joining something at a monthly cost when you are just beginning to learn or will I learn more joining something like HRB, even though to me it looks complicated

best to stick with races with fully exposed horses, all aged handicaps is a good place to start. No horse has any secrets usually and the JIBs will work better.

I having been thinking about the pounds per length I found Blues Brother's standard times and his pounds per length which I have been using to work out the lengths beaten for example Haydock yesterday Sakhee's Return in his last race finished 3rd at York 7f the pounds per length is 2.43 he was beaten by 3L 3*2.43= 7.29 rounded to 7 so this would have been subtracted from the class figure I would have had. Johnny B Goode ran on soft going at Chester over six beaten 8.75L the pound per length is 2.74. 2.74*8.75= 24 rounded. What I am trying to ask is should the pounds per length be different depending on the going and if so how do you adjust the pounds per length. I hope I've expained it right.

Just to clear a few things up, when horses are described as being beaten X Lengths, it is not the actual length of a racehorse. The Lengths are a measurement of time. The Photo Finish Equipment works out the Lengths beaten by the time interval between horses. If the Going is soft or heavy then the Photo Finish Equipment is calibrated to adjust the time frame interval Lengths beaten.

Extract from a post that I read on a Forum that I belonged to.

There is still no standard definition of a length for any age horse but it is quite easy to solve this problem for any age horse. The judge sets his photo-finish camera frames per second speed to suit the expected finish speed. If the horses run slower then on the photo-finish strip they look elongated, if faster they look shorter. Their height does not change = so all the judge has to do is compare the ratio of apparent length to height with a ruler and he can then see immediately what camera speed should have been used to obtain a perfect horse picture. So, if original setting was 5 and they appeared to be shorter by a 1.2 factor then the real finish speed is 5 x 1.2 = 6.0 lengthsper second.

Of course, beatenlengths are a minefield of misinformation, as 2 horses will be closer or farther apart due to the pace of the race. Also, the handicapper has no knowledge of the various horse body weights from which he is adding or taking weight.
 
Thank you Chesham I have been doing a lot of searching on the internet about compiling ratings and one subject that comes up a lot is speed ratings, having done lots of reading today on the subject to me they seem easier to compile than handicap ratings or am I wrong. Any way I have had a go at compiling them with yesterdays meeting at Haydock can you please have a look for me and let me know what you think am I close or miles away and are speed ratings a good way to go.

For someone who has only just started looking at Horse Racing you seem to be advancing very quickly producing a detailed Speed Rating Sheet.

I have Zenafire running the distance in 152.94

My last reply to you as it is taking too much time away from my own daily analysis of races
 
Thank you for all the help from everyone and info the speed ratings were produced by just continues reading all day trying to take in as much as I could, there seems to be so much more that can be found out about producing them than producing a handicap rating, unless I am searching wrong, I was quiet pleased with myself producing the ratings what I don,t know is if they are wrong or right it also took a while to produce them like that. I found the nag nag nag website useful and I happened to come across a sum for working out the seconds per length while searching about pound per length can not remember the site though, I have also started a notebook jotting down all things of interest and what I learn that I think could help me.
I expect my book to arrive tomorrow looking forward to reading it and learning, please anyone who can advise me more please, really eager to find out as much as possible
 
Hi got book yesterday not put it down been reading and reading I am confused though by chapter 5 in the book subjective analysis where he mentions things to consider, race distance, going, winning distance and official ratings and then consider the placed horses lengths beaten.
Then he shows a horse called Dogsbody with a official rating of 75 and his estimated rating of 71 for his performance. What he does not show is how he arrived at that figure, doe he use some kind of point system or what.
 
Speed Figures are in effect mechanical but you have make a judgement most days, that comes with experience. As regards Haydock they are one of the hardest tracks to decipher. The COC is always tinkering away and gives incredibly inaccurate going reports. The straight course often produces times that are in stark contrast to the round course. Ah..the round course, which has an Inner and Outer course.

But as Chesham Chesham says you seem to have gotten a handle on them pretty quickly. I have known a lot a people give up due to the time they take and intricacies of the subject. Good luck.
 
Hi just want to say thank you guys for I am now producing figures, having decided to go down the speed figure route as I find them easier than trying to handicap, I am follow the method of the Blues Brother who's example and video I found very helpful although the figures I end with will be different as I use the fastest 3 to produce my going allowance and the Racing Post above/below times. To me they look good but in reality I do not know for have not started testing as yet as I am still punching in past results not been going long but I am enjoying doing them I have put up the opening day of the flat so you could let me know what you think, green TURF, orange AW, still a lot to learn and still much to read on the forum once again Thank You.

Hi, though this is my first post on this forum as a new member, I have been backing horses since a nipper, so I'm not talking without experience. Primarily I just wanted to say that you should really consider joining HRB, a lot of the work is done for you and the basic cost is a pittance compared to what you will gamble overall as a punter. (I've no connection to HRB only as a member)

As for speed ratings, I wouldn't give you tuppence for them as a method, but each to his own.

When a race is over, you have the most valuable piece of information of all. The Winner. There's a reason why it won, I would suggest to anyone starting out, that they should in effect backtrack, before you start spending time trying to pick a future winner, first spend time analyzing past races to a decent numeric sample without going overboard, if you've got basic Excel skills, you can rustle up a basic analytical spreadsheet, things will start to jump out at you.

The most valuable skill as mentioned up above, is experience and having an inate feel for a race overall, paying too much attention to jockeys and trainers stats, is for me, again each to his own, not important, horses win races.

Hi Gandalf thanks for the advice when it come to Excel I only know things like add, subtract, divide, and multiply, that is as far as my knowledge goes I have to type all info in, not like Blues Brother who uses a macro, I would not know how to, my maths are poor therefore it has to be really simple. I also do not subscribe to the Racing Post, so I will not be able to copy and paste the info that Blues brother uses in analysis of winning times.
But thanks to the Blues Brother I can produce some kind of rating, as yet to be tested or used as I am still typing in results, and now only coming towards the end of inputing April results for the turf and AW.
As for HRB I have signed up for the free trial, but not sure in how to use it, can I get an analysis of winning times on there.
 
Hi whu, there's a link to HRB Youtube video tutorials under the Help button on the main page of the site, no need to login or be a member to view these. As for winning times, I would imagine there is some report on there for them, as I said up above, I don't pay any attention to times, so it's not something I have ever explored on the site for inclusion in any report I get from the site. I'm sure somebody on here will steer you in that direction.
