Gambling Laws - Affordability Checks

There are new laws coming soon, affordability checks could increase - my mate has had a request from Paddy Power to provide his bank statements etc.

But according the release I've read it will only apply as follows;

"Gamblers have to undergo affordability checks. An early draft of the white paper suggested that people who lost £1,000 in a day or £2,000 or over in 90 days would have to undergo an affordability check".

This won't effect me :cool:

Affordability checks in gambling laws are meant to ensure players don’t wager more than they can reasonably afford. Casinos and online platforms are required to assess a player’s income and spending habits to promote responsible gambling and prevent financial harm. It’s a key step in protecting vulnerable players and keeping gambling safe.

The intent of laws & their application & outcome don't always tally.
Any 'checks' should be pre bet , never when someone has won & the bookie is then trying to avoid paying out

However, the Government don’t seem to mind how many lottery cards you buy, how many scratch cards you throw money at and see nothing wrong in promoting happy smiling people wasting both time and money on telephone bingo nonsense. Double standards and corporate hypocrisy yet again. We seem to becoming used to that in this country.

I have some money on deposit with PP recently they emailed to say the account was closed and locked / so I had to find out how to remove my deposit - long story but they said it was closed due to fraudulent behaviour and the money had gone - so more arguing about liability and security - then they came up with send a “photo recent utilities bill and photo of my self holding D Licsence and proof that the depositing account was mine “ what do you do ? - in this day and age of banking rules ever more security checks on everything we do the requirements do appear to pretty harmless , there is the possibility of security hacks , but to be honest I imagine all our details are pretty much open one we have a credit card or make almost any online financial transaction - ??? Anyway it’s open again and I have tested it on a few few small bets - winners as it happens and they have added the winnings to the refound missing deposit

yeah it's the way those pernicious scratch cards are somehow not included that really fks me off, you can piss away 1000s on those and end up in a wheelie bin questions asked but try to win any money on a horse race.....

the 'vulnerable' are far more likely to be drawn to scratch cards than horse racing

I know women young girls in my own family or friends of my family who earn less than £2000 take home a month and spend around £3000 a month relentlessly buying shite off the internet and going to salons, it’s an addiction , same as gambling , no different , I have heard them talking , the word ‘order‘ or ‘sale’ is used in every sentence, they are obsessed. Most of the shite gets sold on Facebook for a 10th of the price after a few months unused to make room for the new shite.

Affordability checks are to protect punters from unscrupulous bookmakers taking advantage of losers, addicts and criminals, ironically they were invented by bookmakers to use against punters. Karma’s a bitch.

I have mine in WH and have sent them docs and photos 5 or 6 times and am having to do it again but they don't tell me why they have to keep asking for them each time I ask what is happening from the previous chat, carries on much longer I will get a lawyer involved.

I've provided proof of ID previously but I would never hand over financial info, I'd rather lose a few hundred in a betting acc than do that. Plus one a day a brick might hit one of those big shop windows

Imagine having to do that for 10 different firms - these security checks are really a form self restriction and a barrier to trade - in my PP travails I pointed out to them that it’s the same accounts and person living in same address that my used weekly if not every day BF account is held under , with no issue - “we don’t share info” was the reply. If it happens again I would just close the account as it’s not as though it’s used often. I a Tote account and that was closed ( the money was returned same day ) as soon as Betfred took it over “ what a coincidence”

I'd like to do that but it's a bit more than just a couple of hundred

Once over I had no restrictions and had 5 figures in an acc but these days I've reduced my staking a lot and wouldn't allow any one bookie to be holding any more than 3 figs of mine cos they simply can't be trusted not to use new laws to withhold money

I can play all day Saturday and Sunday, I sometimes get a message about my activity/a warning that I've been playing too long, but I only ever get the message if I win, if I lose I never get it, betting companies are scum really.
