French Speed Figures

I think you can consider yourself lucky that they even replied to you! From what I've read on a couple of French forums, they don't like very much the idea of interacting with the general public...

I wrote to FG once to clarify what was meant by the prefix "Succ." before a name. I took it to mean successeur, which I could understand in the case of a trainer or owner where they had retired or died, but I began to doubt my assumed translation when I saw it appearing before the names of jockeys every now and again! I know some jockeys can give a good impression of a dead body riding a horse, but I don't imagine it's legal to actually declare a dead jockey, even a retired one, as the designated rider for the race. Anyway, I got no reply.

The investment arm of France Galop is extremely long: the Parisian tracks plus Deauville and some tie-up with Enghien; the PMU; Equidia; Paris-Turf and its sub-journals; all licensing. There's so much they could do to improve radically the data available to the public, but it seems that there is no will to do so. Pity.

I totally agree with that.

I feel that everything is done to ensure that professionals are the only ones with some data and when I see the data available to foreign races, I find that France takes a long delay.
The first time I had a copy of the Racing Post in the hands, I hardly understood anything to racecards ...
So I just read the articles speaking of races, saying "Ils sont fous ces Anglais".
In the end you could say "Ils sont fous ces Français".

An even better summation of the racing industry on both sides of the Channel might be the words of Francis Cabrel, "Est-ce que ce monde est serieux?" in this song of his, La Corrida:

I was working on the speed figures for Auteuil yesterday (27.09.14), and was amazed at the time
the winner of the 1st race Bristol-De-Mai managed in a race for 3yo non-thoroughbreds, which was
only 3.52sec slower than the grade 3 for 4yo's over the same trip won by Polygona.

As Polygona earned a speed figure 125 and the runner up Aladin du chenet a figure of 128
which were the top speed figures at the meeting, the speed figures of 111 the winner of the 1st race Bristol-De-Mai
earned along with the runner up Brin De Thaix were very impressive.

Auteuil 02.10.14

Hurdles +0.10s/f (good)
Chase -0.60s/f (soft)

I wish somebody would explain to me how Auteuil manage to have 2 vastly different going conditions,
on the 02.09.14 the going conditions were Hurdles +0.55s/f (firm) and the chase course was +0.00s/f (good).

Is it possible that they only water the chase course?

Hi Mike ( TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother),

I don't have a satisfactory answer for you and couldn't find any reference to watering on any French forums. The only difference is that the chases were using the inside parts of the track (see diagram), whereas the hurdles remained on the outside ring. Could that have made a difference?

Not really Ray,

If the chase course had been riding faster maybe so, I will just have to accept that this is going to happen at Auteuil

The same problem happened at Clonmel (IRE) yesterday, where the hurdles course was riding at 0.00s/f (good) and the chase course was +0.70s/f (firm).
If you are one of the speed compilers who use only one going allowance, you could end up with a speed figure of 134 for Massinis Adventure @ 0.00s/f (good),
who's official rating is only 79, which would have him improving his handicap mark by +55lbs

Interestingly, the last file you posted here for Auteuil (2014-09-02) gave the exact same GAs for the hurdle and chase courses as for yesterday (+0.55/f and 0.00/f, respectively). Could Auteuil be the first course to have a standard going allowance...?

Now the timekeepers remake mistakes!
At yesterday's meeting in Maisons-Laffitte, the winning time of the last race was 2'18 "60 for 1200m ... This seems to me much !!!

That's because the prize for that race was only half the prize for the other 1200m race, so they ran at half the speed of the runners in the other race.

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to calculate speed figures for the 01/11/2014 Auteuil's meeting. But I have a problem, what standard time can I use to the "Grand Prix d'Automne" race? This race was ran on 4800m hurdles.

Hi, I'm sorry to bother you again, but I'm trying to calculate my speed figures for the Bordeaux meeting of 04/11/2014
The problem is I don't have the standard times of the 3800 chase and 3200 flat. Does anyone have it?

Now the timekeepers remake mistakes!
At yesterday's meeting in Le Croisé-Laroche, they just forgot to time two races, the "Prix Hector Franchomme" and the "Grand prix du Nord" races...
It's a pity

Yeah, I noticed that last night when I scraped the results. I was hoping that FG would correct the omission this morning, but I hoped in vain. Both races are now marked as arrivee validee, but no time has been added. Unfortunately, it seems that FG have sole control over race times, so they're not available on any other site.

You could always try hand-timing them from the Equidia videos. Look on it as character-forming!

Hello everyone!

First, I want to thank Mike TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother and Ray rpjd99 rpjd99 for their explanations on the speed figures that allowed me to earn a little money on the Auteuil races last weeks in France.
Then I see he's just been several meeting on Marseille Vivaux.
Does anyone have times recorded on it (to create standard times)?

Good day to all,

Frédéric.

Hi Frederic ( Calimero1250 Calimero1250 ),

Much as I would like to claim some credit for playing a part in your having a successful Auteuil, all credit has to go to TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother .

I'll prepare an Excel file listing all times recorded for Marseille-Vivaux and post it later. I have a few other things to do first.
