If the prompt were tweaked to provide the VDW ARs, would you be confident of them so that you wouldn't check them, or would you always check them?
I would always check them, JennyK JennyK . AI is prone to 'mentally' wondering off or even making stuff up just to fill in the blanks.

As Chesham Chesham pointed out, you can obtain such data from HRB, together with race results data, I believe.

In an ideal world the BHA or whoever would supply us with downloadable race data / results for free.
 
The HRB only has the data for UK and Irish races JennyK JennyK so would need checking for overseas . On the Plus side you can use CSV or xl down loads and add various other columns of data

Could one "teach" a LLM to access the Racing Post website, identify a card for a specific race, then in turn calculate the VDW ability rating for each runner?

There is probably a way to do it, if the racing post doesn't put too many obstacles in the way. The RP recently altered their format.

If the former, I think it would be quicker to go through the card oneself, but if the latter, that would I assume be a lot quicker.

It is not only the Post that changes things. I've switched to the Life for cards and twice in the last 2-3 weeks they've made minor changes but fortunately nothing on the Post's scale. I am obviously miffed with the Post, but trying to set that to one side, its changes seem to me to have produced an over-cluttered and unattractive version (I'm referring to their compact card).

In the example, you could screenshot each runner one by one and task it to produce a final table. The free GPT versions limit the number of attachments, so paying for the next level up would need to happen to do that properly.

That last part is the one I'd watch.

I don't know how well it will come out but this was my final summary grid for the race Recon Mission won. I have deleted my performance ratings from the now empty columns. You'll see that I do the same as you in keeping an eye on horses below their last winning OR (col. Rns <= last win OR).

Excel coding generates this from my database, but I worry about is the main AR column, because my data is UK and the better Irish handicaps and one never knows when a horse has popped over the Bahrain or somewhere and picked up a win. The only complete source of AR data I know is the Post, hence my questions about AI.

Pity about the ? in Recon Mission's cell in the KH form column. A y there would have made things very interesting.

Having now seen my grid in my previous post, DuckandDive DuckandDive, I think it is intelligible but it looks a whole lot better on my pc where the colour coding automatically highlights what I see as the potential key points in any analysis.

The AR number of races and Turf (or, for aw racing, AW) ARs are relatively new columns but so far they justify their place.

Are you referring to just the consistent form issue with the 14 in the subgroups?

These subgroups contain 4 horses that he gave as examples of "the ultimate balance" (according to his reply to KR Spiers) when he first described how he calculates the ability rating. And all 4 were the top rated in their races, though 2 of them by just a single point.

It was also pointed out by KR Spiers that the 3 handicappers were carrying a penalty for a recent win. One of them Crown Matrimonial was set to carry 12-1 though the weights had been raised 16 lbs. He had been dropped in class to win LTO and was now dropping in further still in this race under a penalty. This horse was an experienced handicapper and his last 3 wins were all higher class than at Wincanton, a course he was a C&D winner.

Ascencia was a different case though. This was a recent novice handicap hurdle winner at Newbury, having run twice between late November and mid December in novice hurdles at Kempton and Folkestone out of the frame both times, but only 7 lengths off the winner in the 2nd LTO at Folkestone. Not fancied in the market both races. Then 11 days later went up in class into a handicap for novices with minimum weight, without a claiming jockey in a race with many claimers riding and won on heavy going at top grade course Newbury over same distance 2m 4f leading at the last to win by 2 and half lengths. He was also giving 4lb to the more fancied runner in 2nd.

So this, in my view at least is different because we are dealing with a relatively lightly raced novice who has shown his true colours in a handicap race with a low weight. And he was simply going for a slightly lower class race against more experienced handicappers, with the minimum weight under the 6lb penalty with the same non claimer jockey. Note he was not used in the novice hurdle runs.

The issue here was the extra 4 furlongs. But he arrived late to win at Newbury which like Leicester has a long run in. Leicester is uphill though but there is a definite grade difference here. Also noted that at Leicester there were just 3 distance winners in the field and none of them were mentioned in the forecast.

Parkhouse is one of those cases where a horse wins, picks up a penalty and is beaten with it but runs again quick enough to still be carrying that penalty. Wincanton was a class 13 handicap chase. Weights raised 12 lbs. He'd run 3rd on 3rd LTO in class 21. Then dropped to class 10 at Exeter to win with 10-8 (after 7lb rider's allowance). Before going to Newbury 2 weeks later whacked up to class 39 in the Mandarin Handicap Chase where despite having the same claiming jockey put up 15 lbs overweight but ran a respectable 4th at 11/1.

12 days later, still carrying the penalty and with same jockey able to ride correct weight of 11 stone (after his allowance) Parkhouse was dropped a long way in class 13 at Wincanton to collect. Again note weights raised 12 lb.

Diamond Edge seems to have less issues to me, other than the longer than anticipated absence apparently due to the yard having a virus and the drop in trip. And I think this just highlights the method approach involving awareness of the differences in each situation. 4 different sets of circumstances that help negate any apparent blips in the form for those horses.

BTW I'm fairly sure Direct Line was using his Chase method outlined in his personal letter to KR Spiers and the same method that found Yacares, etc in his 1986 article found in UWOF book. And this seemed to be about form horses and position in the market.

Some will say it's the same method as Spells It All Out, but why would he give a different approach when it would cover most of the races the main method covered anyway?

He obviously also mentioned the Handicap Hurdle method, which he emphasised was different also.

As you know I think that if a below par performance is subsequently redeemed and if that better performance is on a par or more than the race to be run, then I see that horse as a form horse also. And I think that in certain circumstances it can also be a consistent form horse.

I am hoping that being a consistent class/form horse defines the <20% horses

Perhaps I should say I see those types as form horses, but given your angle on consistent form, not by definition a consistent form horse.

Both Ryeman and Buckbe redeemed their form status in my view, but the fact remains Ryeman failed miserably in pretty much the same class as the Kempton race before going back up in class to win. And Buckbe fell in much lower class than Kempton having been dropped from the run before. And perhaps because it was not an unlucky mishap in the closing stages when looking likely to win (see Warner For Leisure/Stray Shot) VDW classed that negatively in light of the class of race at Kempton and thus she was an inconsistent form horse.

Incidentally on a different issue/method but in relation to Asa Spades, I looked at the weight issue for the '95/96 examples and it made me rethink some issues with those. And taking the consideration that LTO winners who won with authority need less attention on the key horses (Travado and Killeshin), those that were placed (Rivage Bleu) or even out of the frame (Valiant Warrior, Ever Smile and Arthur's Minstrel) seemed to conform to weight positives in relation to their recent performances. But also those non LTO winners did have the factor I spotted a long time ago and have been going round in circles dismissing and then re-examining it for far too long. Think Drumgora.
 
Just watched Hickory win again at Ascot and on the same card for the 2nd year running (Osborne's won that race again too with another horse).

Look at the weight situation with this horse. Every time it drops in class with more weight it doesn't win. But when it goes up in class with less weight, it's a different story especially at Ascot.

There were a lot of class droppers with good form at a much higher level in that 4:48 at Ascot. But they all had negatives surrounding weight issues. Look at Osborne's winner in the previous race too.

This is another reason why I struggle to see how form horse with highest ability rating produces many winners in handicap races. The weight issue has to be a major part of things and finding a form horse with the highest ability rating in a handicap is almost always going to be a higher weighted runner, but often with lower weighted form horses below it as dangers.

I went against such a horse today at Bangor with a lower weighted multi winning runner carrying much less weight than last time. But my reasoning was weight, even though I had said Tamarind would have won LTO in an 8k chase with 11-10 but for the mishap. Tamarind needed to be much more up against it weight wise to have dismissed him so easily. But that's the complexities of all this. There are a multitude of traps to fall into.

Luckily I didn't fall into them for the 4:48 at Ascot as I could see there were too many class droppers with negatives. So I didn't back anything in that race. But the result and the data for the winner simply reinforced my view that if you look at the form of horses VDW gave such as Saher in the Lincoln with a eye on the weight issue, it's clear to see why he said "Anyone not selecting Saher should start asking questions of themselves".

AI Is a journey and like any journey you start at the beginning, It’s hard work exploring the best way to use it . Once the penny drops it’s a game changer. Eventually you find that fairly accurate tissue prices can be arrived at .

Spotting a False Move (The "Spoof")​

A false move happens when a large trader places massive, unmatched "dummy" bets on one side of the book to scare the market into moving the price, only to cancel their bets before they get matched. Here is the fingerprint of a fake steamer:

  1. High PR, but incredibly low FLOW: The Pressure Ratio might look massive (e.g., 4.0x) because a huge back bet is sitting in the queue, but because the FLOW is tiny, you know nobody is actually taking the bet. It is just sitting there for show.
  2. High VEL, but low CONF: The price drops quickly (High VEL) because the market gets spooked, but the algorithm flags a low CONF score (e.g., under 25). The software recognizes that the price dropped through "empty air" without real money changing hands.

Often you may find that your Tissue Price Fav wins, but goes unbacked because it does not become an overlay. However, of your backing at an underlay price you lose over the long run

Always feed AI with good data for a reliable source , Ie Timeform. raceIQ, etc and a BF Live data feed that updates and refreshes in real time
