CHELTENHAM 2026

Delayed comment really, but shame about Sir Gino, I don't like to see horses get injured. The New Lion didn't cover himself in glory either, but does appear to have a turn of foot and good top speed.

Starting to worry about Nicky Henderson, the last few years he's had a fair few injuries, illnesses and underperformers, still had a few decent horses and winners and might just be a run of bad luck.

Yeah i backed him a few months ago for the ch hdl so rather disappointed, still he appears to be reasonably well.

Its been going on for years with the Henderson horses ,I am no ped expert and may well be wide of the mark ,but I wonder if they have got poor dispositions for the jumps game ,being less hardy that is ,because of predominantly flat orientated bloodlines ..Maybe someone who knows more about it could offer an opinion.

It certainly seems to be a seasonal occurrence now the stable superstars breaking down. usually they have a racecourse gallop , everything is declared fine and dandy ,horse never looked better sort of comments ,then down the line the horse either vastly under performs or breaks down again. Surely it cannot be a coincidence season after season.

On my limited knowledge traits such as breathing issues are commonplace now probably inbreeding the cause, also watering regime over the last few decades will probably make champions of less hardy horse than the past and carry on through the bloodline.
Most of these top NH horses are french bred AQPS or Selle Francais , no idea about Sir Gino but he is another French bred with German lines so would normally be ideal for NH racing, these AQPS and Selle Francais are not thoroughbreds so don’t have as many inbreeding traits, although like I say I could be wrong as just stuff I vaguely remember reading.

There's enough in what's being said to make you think twice but on balance i would say if it was anything to do with the way they are trained then wouldn't it be the case that there would be a pattern regarding injuries but without the evidence to prove it i feel there are different problems including illness.

Flat bred horses ? Don't know but i think we've been here for a good while now.

Wonder if in Sir Gino case could be anything to do with the infection or treatment for the infection that nearly killed him last year, I know it was the opposite hind leg. He didn’t do anything to fracture his pelvis jumped and landed smooth with minimal shock from what I could see.
Not a vet , no real clue, could treatment he had to have or inactivity or the infection itself weaken his bones.

Honest answer is i've no idea.

Interesting fact about Nicky is that he has never in all these years won any Grand National ,not even a regional one.

Has he ever had a winner in any race over 3m3f ?
I can’t recall him winning any of those long distance chases, he must have, I just can’t remember any
found this on google Henderson won a race with Greenhope in 2006. at 3 miles 3 furlong but never won any regional nationals

Enjoyed watching the DRF yesterday. I was hoping for a better run by The Revenant ,but Cobden unfortunately fell off. The horse i took out of it was Western Fold which finished second. I had already backed it for the Brown advisory at the festival at 25s so very happy with the run.

Cobden might need a few more rides in Ireland before he gets used to the tracks, didn't seem to have any decent runs really, but could have just been the horses.

Coral end 52 year sponsorship deal with Cheltenham due to tax rises, what a joke.

It almost makes me want to stop betting, I don't like giving money to these companies, at the same time, I'd like to take them for big bucks and punish them, that would be satisfying.

They make plenty of money, Labrokes Coral is owned by Entain, which owns loads of betting brands, and it depends on the source but they made £1 billion and have been profitable for years. Except they gave some dodgy £67million bonus payments out years ago and ended up with a £658million HRMC tax bill, but make punters pay for their dodgy dealings.

To be honest with you rb i stopped trying to take them for big bucks years ago .Because i am not disciplined enough to just have a minimal amount of bets . The more bets we have ,the more we tip the odds in their favour. it is a hobby for me ,i only bet what i can afford to lose. I build my betting bank up in the summer months when i rarely have a bet. I am a small stakes punter my staple bet is either 10 or 20 pounds. I do the odd forecast and lucky 15 for a bit of fun but mostly like a decent value e/w way bet in a competitive handicap where i think i have found something. sorry for the ramble everything you have written is 100per cent right.

Yeh I'm the same/similar really, I only usually bet around £30-£50, if I lose I leave it, if I win I might have a day with slightly more put on/higher stakes. My stakes are usually small unless I really fancy something and the odds are short, I can even play £0.05 or £0.10 on some bets.

And I only try to take them for big bucks with £0.05 - £0.20 acca's. Like today, I will pick 7 horses at Leopardstown and play the 7-fold, but probably also the 6-folds and 5-folds. Then I'll swap a few horses a few times and put several bets like that on, just trying to get lucky at hit 6 or 7 in the day for big bucks. Yesterday I had Final Demand and Lossiemouth in almost every acca I put on, I was slightly worried about Final Demand but not Lossiemouth, I was shocked by that one, but I think you have to pick a couple of bankers and put them in every bet and hope they win. If they do you have a bunch of acca's on the go, if not, they all go down. Today, I'm going to put Romeo Coolio in every acca and hope that he beats Kargese, and probably a bunch of 5 & 6 folds without that race included, as it's probably not worth it anyway.

I do put singles and doubles on and enjoy it, but I'll never win big bucks only picking/placing a few, but still definitely agree that we all often put too many on, especially me, and I should maybe just make my picks and put a little bit more on and not spread it, I just I like to have several chances at big bucks.

Yeah i do like a few 4folds at the festival myself and obviously a few placepots when i go racing. The 4folds are usually Mullins hot shots though. I have been pretty lucky backing Mullins 2nd and even 3rd strings in Ew Lucky 15s at the Punchestown festival at descent prices too.
