Betting Halted on Exchange

I hope that this is not a daft question. Why is the betting halted on the Exchange before the race has finished ? When the betting is halted I don't know whether to rescue a Lay Bet or leave it to run. I've had a couple of narrow squeaks which I could have prevented if I could have put on a Back Bet. I couldn't do that because the betting had been halted on the Exchange and I had to listen to the continuing commentary without being able to act.
Why do they halt the betting before the race has finished ? Would be grateful for comments. Thank you.

Betting IS halted when they finish, the issue is the medium you are watching has a delay, delays vary, but unless you have a drone, or have 20years experience then don’t attempt to place bets near the finish of a race, because you will only be matched if you are wrong, people will already have seen your bet as a loser and taken your money, if you are right your bet will be unmatched.
