Hi Pingman - we were discussing this at weekend down the golf club - where are the characters - I only have the sky sports for the usa golf in the evening this year watched the masters and that's about it - boring boring - bland courses wide open and boring golfers - Hope fully T Woods makes it back to inject some pace and competition back into the game, because right now the game is losing popularity quickly and need something to revive it. I even heard a shortened format similar to cricket 20 20 mooted but I don't want that, just decent competition - on a course that makes the players think of some else than 340 yd drive'

Palmer - Jack Nick - Player - Trevino - Seve - Faldo - Norman - Woods - all players that put opponents on the back foot from the off - made them all raise their game and made them better players - not like current crop where you die a multi millionaire and never even have won a game.

Palmer always came across as a real gent - fierce competitor who hated losing but was there with a handshake and back slap for a well deserved winner. will be remember for works around golf and his Bay Hills club and brolly umbrella as much as his playing record

Wiki - Palmer won seven major championships:

playing with crap balls and dodgy clubs -

Taking delivery of my new Mizino Blades ( had the MP for ten yeras or so now great clubs) this week " -------------------- foreeeee " - and no doubting toasting the great man at the weekend

Not really a golf fan myself but I do catch the odd major and massively enjoy the Ryder Cup(come on Europe this weekend) but I do find myself wondering how the guys of today and the gents of yesterday compare. Don't get me wrong I know the skill level is huge and the margin of errors non existent but the amount of help the modern equipment gives to today's pros in terms of distance and the ability to draw or fade is light years away from what the gents of yesterday played with. When I watch I like to see players working for a par and getting rewarded with anything else either by being ambitious or by pulling off several great shots. To see tournaments being won at -20 or better kind of illustrates how much the game has changed. Maybe this is what kills the spectacle for some. A 20/20 style golf tournament? That already exists. Crazy golf anyone.........:p

Mark,

Agree pal nice clubs by the way, just waiting for the pro to sort my fitting out, really like the ping blades but feel they may be a step too far and go for the G or I but hey new clubs are new clubs.

Totally agree with above however, the persimmons and balata,s which I played with made you a better player, Palmer would have destroyed Augusta if he had the modern clubs back then.

Buts that's another discussion

Their was one chap call Mick Austin he was a Scotsman and could average over 330 yards with a persimmon driver with an extra stiff 43 1/2 shaft lenght, his swing speed was once measured at over 155 mph and even Bobby Jones was gob smacked watching him, the only trouble was he could not putt that well.
