spotlight racing post

Newbie
Hi, everybody newbie here,
so been a regular and keen punter for many years now, had good days and had bad days, as i am sure we all have. But for the last 12 month been stuck in a real rut, no confidence, and simply going along with what spotlight says in the racing post, instead of making my own judgements, and time and time again have been put off by spotlight comments only to be proved right. Doing something wrong but just can not put my finger on it, confidence a factor yes, but never used to be like this , anybody else the same /advice etc.

Hi hector hector reading your above my first thought was stop looking at the spotlight comments. ? As you have been in the game for years then you will have some experience and this should enable the best learning to come from yourself. Re stuck in a rut and loss of confidence my suggestion would be to continue making and recording your own selections but do not back them.

Be honest with your paper proofing : record keeping and only contemplate re - starting to risk your money after experiencing a decent time period of improved results. At any time no one can force us to bet and this obvious statement can be used as an edge all of the time. :) I think you have already taken the first important step Re resolving the matter via your sharing and seeking advice, because many faced with the same situation do not and as a result there hole gets deeper.

One of the hardest lessons for those seeking long term profit is that you first need to learn how to lose. The real positive of this forum is there are members who have been there done it, come through it and are still here. I have been in the game for 50yrs and am still learning which imo is a great injustice but also accepted as part of the price.

sorry mick, i should have pointed been betting now for approx 43 years, and believe me i am a very honest person, and i know what its like to lose, jamie spencer bless him/shane kelly/ etc etc, never stop learning in this game, keep us all on our toes.

If I was to offer some advice here in one line, it would be, 'don't go looking for the bets, let the bets come to you'.

And one of the best ways to do this is to forget about betting for a while and get yourself involved in some kind of racing project.
Pick an area within racing that interests you - speed figures, ratings, handicaps, etc. and study it. You don't have to go 'whole hog' with these though.
Get some software ( a lot on here use HorseRaceBase, for example - but there are many others ) and have a play.

After a while you start to develop your own intuition, or regain it, if you've lost your way though a lack of confidence or clouded judgement.
It's far better to put down a base or foundation to work from that you can fall back on.
And it's far better to back your own losers than someone else's :)
Oh, and read some racing books.
Good luck.

Hello hector hector ,

Have you lost your confidence in all aspects of your life or is it just racing and betting?

If it is just your betting and not a general loss of confidence you could try comparing something you do that you are confident about to your betting. How do you know when you have made a confident decision in the other thing and compare it to your decisions in betting. I think you'll find that there are differences and you can work on the differences in your betting. You have decades of experience and have probably seen every trick a trainer can pull. You're not new to the game. Equally think back to when you were confident and successful, what were you doing different then?

Sorry if that seems a bit touchy feely but it is a matter of how you are thinking about racing, betting and the decisions you make and the best place to look at them is within yourself

Good luck and stay well

I haven't bought a Racing Post in a while or used the website but I'd imagine Spotlight selections show a loss to level stakes. No harm in reading as much as you can about a race because something might catch your eye but I wouldn't use Spotlight as a basis for a bet, there are some excellent judges on here who do far better write ups and know the game inside out ! I have been busy during the summer myself and haven't had much time to get involved in racing but hopefully now I can get back into studying the form again and my way of doing that is to look at the days results and go back through the form of the winners to see if any races will keep coming up - Hot/Cold Races on HRB a help too- but I have to say I think at the moment there is far too much racing on ! Good advice from mick mick in posts 3 and 5 as always.
