Peter Bowen recently retired. I think it is time for an appreciation thread.
I first knew of Peter Bowen from seeing Stately Home running on Channel 4. Stately Home was wearing cheek pieces. I think Channel 4 said this is the first time a horse in the UK has run in them. They are also known as French Blinkers but I'm sure Channel 4 said they come from Australian racing. We have Peter Bowen to thank, for cheek pieces.
My favourite horse of his is Swansea Bay. I remember being in the betting shop and saw him running in the Badger Ale Chase at Wincanton. He had the form of a Peter Bowen horse, 4 wins in a row plus a 6th, and another win after at Wincanton. I had £10 win at 14/1. Andrew Thornton, a favourite jockey, was riding. It won.
Peter Bowen was very good at getting terrible horses and getting wins out of them.
He had Take The Stand, 2nd in the 2005 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He had Mckelvey 2nd in the 2007 Grand National.
He knows how to lay a horse out, for a big race. He trained Al Co to win the 2014 Scottish National at 40/1. He trained Always Waining to win 3 Topham Chases.
For me though, it is that knack of training terrible horses to win. A great achievement for me is he bought ex Reg Akehurst Amazon Express for 700 guineas at Ascot sales, and found 2 races for him to win at Cartmel. He had finished 2nd to Shawiya, in the 1993 Triumph Hurdle and was sold at some point later, after an injury.
Another great training performance is getting Gem Mill to win 2 races and finish 2nd in 7 races. That is prize money for his owners. This horse was useless but as soon as Peter Bowen took him in, he was pulled up, in his first race wearing a visor. Then he won next time at Newton Abbot, wearing a visor at 25/1.
