The Cobnut seller was the first time VDW mentioned the placing of horses and gave the Goodwood pair for example. At the end of the letter he says again "Reading through the form" is he trying to draw our attention to the odd placement (after his 6f win) of the horse that The Old Fellow beat last time out? (Note how he keeps harping on about the reading of form)

It looks like the same odd placing with Philodantes LTO run as well after his 10f win. If Lee did write that about that letter then you have to take notice of what he said, he is a very astute horse player.

yes downey, lee was one of the most informed members on the gummy forum will try and find original post by lee on the old fellr letter philodantes another example i have not been able to find satisfactory answers to what vdw was trying to put across with his methods very clever writer..

Philodantes was a classic example of what the trainer does next ie; after his fine win over 10f at Epsom the trainer placed him over 12f at Ascot, a distance he had never run over, finishing 6th, then at Goodwood back to 10f and he takes the money.
From Make Racing Pay book, "A winning horseis often sent up in class (not in this case) next time out, frequently over a longer distance , and those following winners last time out should treat these with caution.

Distance is relative to class

Vdw said that Warner For Leisure looked like he needed a little bit further but would have to drop a long way down in class, case in point.

It took me the best part of an hour to find that quote from VDW about Warner For leasure and all the time it was in the book I was reading "Make Racing Pay" and ,yes, he did say that.
