Any Geeks, Software Developers here ?

Here’s a very useful slightly more advanced book. Doesn’t deal with configuring the server or data types, just the T-SQL language. Excellent as a reference in your early MS SQL days

A quick question if I may.

So I have a Horse Table with all of the 'known' horses to date in.
When I come to update my Results I need to know whether a horse is already known or whether I have to add it to the Horse table.

My question is, what is the fastest way to find if the Horse is already known?

It is simply a SELECT FROM HorseTable * WHERE Horse_Name = Horse

Or is there any benefit in doing some sort of pre search sort or filtering of the HorseTable?

If your results are in a table Results, and horses are in a table Horse with their names in a column Name:

INSERT Horse
(Name)

SELECT Name
FROM Results r
WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM Horse WHERE Name = r.Name)

will create a new Horse row if it doesn't already exist.

It's vital to avoid the creation of duplicate rows in any table, as de-duplication can be a real pain in the arse.

So today I have started looking at consolidating various reference datasets I have into one SQL Database.

My sources are Raceform Interactive, which is a Foxpro based DB that I link to via Access, and my own Excel sheets.

I found Microsoft Sql Server Migration Assistant for Access and have used it to get the required RI tables into SQL. I did have a few issues with SSMA crashing a few times. I got around this by not importing every table in the same session. Next I will be looking at getting my data imported.

Ark, which version of MS SQL Server are you using? The Developer's Edition for £50 is fully featured, so includes SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), which allows you to easily build, by dragging and dropping contols, import routines and save them as packages that can be executed ad hoc or scheduled.

This is how I run daily data imports of .csv files into my SQL DB.

I have SQL Server 2008 on my laptop although I think I have another version kicking around on a Visual Studio DVD.
I'll go and check it out but £50 with SSIS included sounds good.

It looks like I have SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on DVD,is that a bit long in the tooth?
I wonder if they do an upgrade.

At work we jumped from SQL Server 2000 straight to 2008, which is the version I use at home, but SSIS first replaced its cumbersome precursor, DTS, in SQL Server 2005 so it should be included in the version you have if it's fully featured.

Hi Ark,
I have access to micosoft action pack havent logged on for a while, if needed I can take a look for a later sql developer version if required for you.

Thanks for chipping in, Simon.

One question I do have: what did you write the Proform front-end interface in? I've always liked it and it's as stable as a mountain.

Ray

Good, let us know how you get on with the installation (back up your existing DBs first), because I might upgrade to it too!

We'll probably upgrade Profrom to SQL 2012 express later this year, for new installs at any rate.

Depends on testing to see if it speeds up database access significantly enough to warrant a upgrade.

If it ain't broke etc,etc.

Thats what they said about my old boiler [ no I am not talking about my ex! ] now it's just broke in the middle of Winter Grrrrr!:headbang:

Yeah, your're right to a degree, but we used MSDE 2000 right up until 2010, but then they stopped supporting this and new windows version began to have install issues, so we had to upgrade to 2008.

This will happen with 2008 but probably not for a good 5 years at least

Still like to try keep ahead of the game :)
