Wind assisted

In athletics if the wind is too strong the times do not count for records etc. We all know how much easier walking or running with a tail wind as opposed to into it. However I never see any allowance made for wind in speed figures. You could say its in the standard times. However I still don't think this is a fair reflection as sprinters may only have wind in one direction if encountering only 1 bend or the straight such as Newmarket. Whereas middle distance runners may experience equal amounts from four directions
Also would strong wind conditions favour bigger stronger horses?

I would love to see on results wind strength and direction but then again I would also like sectional timing. Maybe one day.

Most speed compilers like BB will have a project speed Rating for each race before it is run and that will help with working out a going allowance, which will take into account any affect that Wind Velocity and don't forget Humidity during the summer months.

Back in 1936 The Mason Time Test was taking into account these factors although no mention was made that he was using projected times as part of forming a going allowance

The best example of wind assisted times, was at Jebel ali UAE recently, when on a very fast track and a tail wind
they had 3 track records and the going allowance that day was +0.65s/f which went off my going allowance table scale
setting a new record high.

AW going allowance table:
Fast +0.50s/f
Stand/Fast +0.18s/f to +0.40s/f
Standard -0.15s/f to +0.15s/f
Stand/Slow -0.48s/f to -0.18s/f
Slow -0.70s/f to -0.50s/f

During the summer months, when they race at Wexford IRE on the turf, I have had going allowances up around the +0.60s/f
which in the old days would have been referred to as hard going.
The more you work on going allowances, the more you learn about different course characteristics, for example I noticed
when they have the summer jumps festival at Perth, the chase course always seems to ride faster than the hurdle course.

Turf going allowance table:
Firm +0.55s/f to +0.63s/f
Good/firm +0.20s/f to +0.53s/f
Good -0.25s/f to +0.18s/f
Good/soft -0.55s/f to -0.28s/f
Soft -1.00s/f to -0.58s/f
Heavy -1.58s/f to -1.03s/f

Thanks Mike. Do you think the size of the horse is relevant when its windy?

I picked this up from somewhere and if i could recall where i would give the original author credit but i think its quite useful for going allowances etc

I shouldn't think that the size of the horse is relevant, if the jockey can cover him up.

The article above was written by Dave Edwards "Top Speed".

When he is working out his going allowances he now uses my lbs per length figures because
every course and distance comes with it's own set of figures.

just out of interest, like a lot of things in racing, there are very few completely straight courses,if the wind was with you in one diection, wouldn't it be against you in the other :drinks:

That's what I tried to say in the first post hayzee. The first race may be a 5f straight dash wind assisted second race 1m 2f right round the circuit with no wind advantage or disadvantage.

Hayzee, i agree with your post above, and it does not even have to be on a straight course. What about a side on wind or a blustery wind at the top of a hill. Or to put it another way do not trust any one offering some kind of weather report on days of interchangeable weather.
