I am trying to focus on one particular type of bet and I think the over 2.5 goals bet is a really good market, it has only two outcomes unlike trying to predict the result of a match or awful betbuilders and the odds allow the opportunity to find value and explore other ideas such as backing against your picks if you find your picks are not profitable.
But it is not an easy bet, typical average odds of around even money reflects a 50% chance of a bet winning and England League 1 is a good example of how evenly matched under/over 2.5 goals are - last season there were 277 over 2.5 goal matches v 275 under 2.5 goal matches and the previous season 275 over 2.5 goal matches v 277 under 2.5 goal matches.
Goals are one of the hardest thing to come by in football (after penalties awarded and red cards) and the third goal is possibly the hardest goal to come by as at 1-1 both teams typically balance defence and attack, whilst at 2-0 a lot of home teams just try and close the game down, playing tight and protecting their lead. 0-2 is potentially a favourable scoreline for a 3rd goal as the home team are expected to attack more and may be vulnerable to a counter attack.
But how do you predict what matches will have over 2.5 goals and have value? Having placed thousands of bets on this market it has been crazy how many games that should be full of goals end up 0-0, 1-0 or 0-1, whilst matches that look to be low scoring games based on recent form do have over 2.5 goals.
I am hoping by starting this post we can get people’s ideas of what factors are most important to consider when trying to predict if a match will have over 2.5 goals to try and form a model/system for picking profitable bets?
Here is a list of factors that I think are relevant, although how relevant is debatable.
(1) How good is the league for goals? There are some leagues around the world which are really poor for goals – Iran, Argentina Primera National, Primera B and C, Italy Serie C, Brazil Serie B. Whilst leagues such as Australia A League, Dutch leagues, Norway OBOS, England Premier League have so many goals.
(2) Current form of both teams and what type of form for the home and away teams are most indicative to producing goals?
(3) Where in the league both teams are. You generally see when an away team is a lot lower in the league than the home team that they are more likely to have the mindset of parking the bus. Also two teams at the top of the league often creates a stalemate. What sort of league positions for both teams creates most likely scenario for goals?
(4) Typically how many goals are in the home team's recent past home games and vica versa with the away team?
(5) How does the home team generally set up at home against similar opposition?
(6) How does the away team generally set up away from home against similar opposition?
(7) How strong a home team’s attack is and ability to score goals? Are their strikers on form and are they creating chances?
(8) How strong an away team’s attack is and ability to score goals and create chances?
(9) How strong a home team’s defence is and ability to keep a clean sheet?
(10) How strong an away team’s defence is and ability to keep a clean sheet?
(11) Head to head past results - if one team is stronger than the other and typically do the games have goals or not?
(12) How each team is set up tactically for the match – are they set up to be attacking, balanced or defensive?
(13) How does the home team usually do against similar opposition?
(14) How does the away team usually do against similar opposition?
(15) What result will each team be happy with – if a team would be happy to get a draw they are likely to play tight and hard to break down?
(16) The weather and time of year? Warmer months and weather typically are favourable for goals.
(17) Is it a local derby?
Have I missed anything? Which factors do you believe are most relevant or not relevant? Would appreciate any responses.
