Hi been browsing over the forum especially about speed ratings and the Blues Brother with interest, as I am still learning on the subject, I would like to ask about weight.
The Blues Brother gives an example of how he compiled a rating for Dawn Approach brilliant is all I can say about it, and I am trying to follow the example to form and keep my own ratings. But what concerns me is weight the Blues brother said As Dawn Approach carried 9st 5lb, 59 + 5lb = 64 ( this is Dawn Approach speed figure). So if Dawn Approach had carried 8-11 we would have had to subtract 3lb from his speed figure i.e.
Good no problem, my promblem is with amateur races where jockeys carry a lot more weght Silver dixie for example carried 11-4 does that mean 32lbs would be added to his rating or do you bring amateur races back to 9st.

@whu

Dave Edwards once asked me how I overcame the problem with amateur races where the jockeys carried over 10-0.

I use a base rate 100 and a weight of 9-0 for the flat, I use +/- 14lbs from 9-0 (min 8-0 & max 10-0) and over the jumps it is 130 and 11-0 (min 10-0 & max 12-0).

Most people who follow horse racing think 1lb = 1 length, if a horse goes up 6lb in the weights this does not mean that the horse will be stopped by 6 lengths, a figure of 1lb is not a constant.

So you have rated a horse and he has a speed figure of 50 and the jockey carried 11.0.

50+14 = 64 and not 50+28 = 78

You will find that using ceiling of +/- 14lbs, when horse runs again carrying their official handicap marks the speed figures will be similar.

Try this out on a few races, you will be surprised at the results.

Thanks Mike looking at your rating of Silver Dixie at Newbury on the 11/6/15 the raw rating was 33 the weight carried was 11.4 why did you only add 4 to his rating giving him 37

@whu

Well spotted, it was a typo.
Where I am changing back and forwards from national hunt to the flat, I saw the 11-4 and treated it as a jumps race, I have amended the speed figure to 47.
