Snooker

...... sorry to see Jack go out in such a manner, looks like he was under the weather in this one. Michael Holt still in there but maybe a step too far in this encounter. Stephen Maguire still motoring well and looks capable of going further. ;)
In my much younger days I played Stephen Maguire in a qualifier down in Prestatyn, he can only have been about 11 or 12yr old at the time.

I lost 5-0.

Few too many beers since then! Can't believe he has won so few trophies after he way he won the UK back in 2004, beat David Gray 10-1 in the final. But as we mentioned before that was probably down to being fired up by Shaun Murphy antics at the event.
Massively underachieved for all the talent he has IMO. I was fortunate enough to play against a few PRO's back in the day. Hendry, Chris Small, Billy Snaddon, Stephen Maguire, Martin Dziewaltowski and a few others.

I couldn't see the end of a snooker table now mind you, nevermind play.

Excellent you must have been quite good though? Good memories for the children. I was never any good, poor eyesight from an early age.

The last 32 is reached and a day off before they turn up in York.

A record number of Chinese players in the last 32 of a ranking event. Zhang Anda back to some sort of form. Belgian Julien Leclerq the lowest ranked player left in as he tries to retain his card for the tour qithout qualifying.

High light of the last couple of days has to be Scott Donaldson recovering from 5 -0 to win the last 6 against Bingham and then his emotional interview with Rob Walker as he mentioned the death of his father in October. Great t osee him show some of his old form in the alst week but still well below his best after the Covid problems from the injections.

Elliott Slessor took the next award for the hardest ever thump of the table! Maybe not, in his interview Walker mentioned his MAguire style actions but this one was real hard and brought him a warning. From memory other than Maguire I think Holt might have damagd his hand once when he did it, Carter and O'Sullivan have certainly smacked the table before and I am sure some others. Anyway as with Maguire, it worked wonders and after the incident he was unstoppable.

These are the official rankings of the players left in, Lei, Holt and Leclerq are on the second season of their 2 year card so their points are artificially lower than others as they have less events.

So in draw order these are the games for the last 32 in draw order. Trump and Si start the next round at 1pm Saturday and then over 4 days for this round. Still best of 11.

Zhou Yuelong my top rated qualifier takes on Ronnie hoping to continue his improved form this season.
Maguire and Trump a great game to start with.
Slessor having survived the first qualifying game meets Kyren Wilson. Slessor said he has never won at the York venue so a tough game to end that. Henry as his coach surely doesn't encourage those fist banging, maybe that will be a new plan after the success if it though?
Robertson and Hawkins get the lowest rated qualifiers. Leclerq said he had been ill most of the week so that is a great effort to make it through with some good wins, including 2nd top seed Jak Jones.
Closest game, Gary Wilson v Zhang who is surely better than his current rating as he strives to stop his slide down the rankings/

..... Judd does not seem to have done a lot lately yet he is nearly four ranking points ahead of Ronnie! Granted Ronnie has not done a lot either recently but I am surprised to see such a large gap. ;)

At last. The waiting is over. Have I got some mug punts for you! Had a brilliant midweek on the footy. 10 £5 bets, 6 copped. Bookies decided to offer me 11/1 that 3rd in the Bundesliga wouldn't beat 3rd in the Prem. Then 7/1 that free scoring Dutch table toppers would struggle to find the net against a team that got spanked 3-0 by an average Forest side. Anyway, upshot is most of my bank hasn't even had to be earned. Got to be careful, as it spends easier when it comes easy.

Hope I havn't gone too overboard. Gone for a couple of outsiders on opening day, but thrown in correct scores for cover. I've had £25 on outrights. Going to have a £200 bank without outrights included. Will add it on at the end though. Think I'm about £203 down on the season so far. Here goes.

Outright

Robertson 15/2 £5 pays £42.50
Selby 8/1 £5 pays £45
Allen 16/1 £3 pays £51

Higgins/Woolaston Deciding Frame 15/4 £6 pays £28.50. Bank £166.

I said at the start of the season had a feeling Guodong would win a big one this season , I thought maybe the Masters. He already won an event missed other events and recent form not at best but he should be fresh and motivated and the odds 40/1 with skybet too hard to resist.
Xintong is probably peaking now but he’s only 9/2 which seems a bit short in a season where they are passing it around so far.

Couple of correct scores helped you there TheSolihullKid TheSolihullKid .

My ratings have a big gap between the qualifiers and the top 16. My highest rated non 16 are all out.

Probably the advantage of qualifying seems to have been lost by the switch of venue and tables. These are a lot harder than those at Wigan last week. Seems all stacks up to favour the top players in these events. The tables are all supposed to be the same so can only be humidity in the venue or temperature. 6 down and 6 qualifiers out. Surely will change sometime?? Zhang Anda the most likely or Zhou Yuelong if Ronnie not at peak, but nothing obvious.

Much safer, but cuts the winnings down. Just the one came in though. I thought the Holt one was in the bag too at 5-2, but he won a couple more frames to go 6-4. Gone for an upset tonight with Gilbert to beat Williams, but with covering correct score to retain interest if it goes wrong. Agree though, think it was two 6-0's yesterday and Holt was 5-0 down. The qualifiers don't seem too sharp. I'll keep an eye out though.

Footage of Guodong after I placed a bet on him to win

Not so good today TheSolihullKid TheSolihullKid . Allen never looked in the game and Long Zehuang a step up in class too much though had plenty chances to reach your frame target. Better tomorrow.

At last some non seeds got through. I suppose 5 would be expected based on my predicted odds so on course for that. As mentioned Guodong had a shocker after his lack of recent games and Pang the first qualifier to get through. Donaldson inspired by his emotions was never challenged by an out of sorts Mark Allen. Zhang Anda wins the last 3 to beat Wilson as the most likely qualifier, only saw the last frame and he was a little frazzled with some of his shot choices near the end. A lot tougher against Xintong in the next round.

Watched highlights last night. Just showed about 70% of Xintong game. Have to assume Ronnie will be their choice tonight, so gone mainly on that one. Won't check the scores and just sit up until 2.30am watching. Not got a smart phone because I refuse to be a zombie when I'm outdoors. Spend long enough online as it is. Need some luck.

O'Sullivan off the pace in first ever loss to Zhou.
Wilson seems to have lost his confidence, said a new cue today and 4 tips on it! Hardly the way to prepare for a game. Didn't see any of it but complaining about tight pockets! Amazing how a table can be so different depending on the venue or country.

Last 16 the next 2 days presumably on a new cloth and might help them play better. It is much more entertainng on nhtese tighter tables in my opinion though.
