Discipline, discipline,discipline! One of the key buzz words for betting. One of the key things ive been lacking the last few weeks. Buoyed by a decent level of success early flat season, ive got a little carried away and "thrown" a few points away with a bit of random betting. Muppet indeed! This is my penance to keep things in perspective, my confessional booth as it were. Every time i sin against the laws of profit i shall return. Truth be told i shall be here more often than that.

As a confirmed systemite i have a few systems live, and then any number on trial at any one time. Ive been interested in how the Archie(chi) score fits in with these. There have been discussions here and elsewhere about a high chi score being the true evaluation of whether a system is worth following long term. In the long term(in my experience at least) very few systems will live up to past results when backchecked as you will (nearly) always look for the optimum set of rules to give you maximum returns. There have been numerous systems posted on this forum with fantastic chi figures. With apologies to those who do, i find myself intensely frustrated with those who post up endless systems, promising each one to be brilliant, but who fail to post any qualifiers subsequently. Anybody with access to a database can put numbers together, being profitable means making those numbers meaningful.
 
Hi Sigster Sigster! I know when i use to do it for living and when i had sometimes to wait for bets a few days, what i use to do was have small amounts on probable bets just to relieve the boredom, but even on those i was mayb a little bit in front or a least about level.

Now i am older i dont get bored so easy, but only back small anyhows mainly just for fun because i still like the challenge of trying to read the form i suppose but racing is so much harder now i find.

Allthough i agree with this to an extent, that they will not give the high % results that they forecast mayb, but i think is quite plausible to get results in the 20% to 30% bracket equal to good reading of form.

Have to join you in the confessional here, Sigster Sigster, so I will unburden my soul !

Not lost a lot, only been betting a few quid here and there, but on the World Cup - and basically my record in football betting is pretty darned dismal !
Won a few quid backing the draw in the first round games as I thought they would be cagey affairs, then trading out for a profit and I guess I assumed I knew what I was doing, so promptly lost it all in the later rounds !

Moral of the story is I guess stick to what you know !
 
It's always nice when you get yourself back on track, when you see out a losing run without changing your staking, or losing your bottle as your bank dwindles. Today's vindication rattles home @25\1 two weeks after coming home @20\1 for me. Have to say I felt an element of doubt watching them mill round at the start till ten minutes after post time while they waited for a thunderstorm to pass. Especially as my selection drifted and then drifted some more. Tactics the same as two weeks ago, broke well and led pillar to post, never easy on the nerves as horses start to close over the last 2 furlongs but then the adrenaline rush as a big one comes home. 32 points back in the kitty and off to bed for some much needed kip before work. Of course sleep doesn't arrive straight away, how could it after an adrenaline surge like that but eventually fall asleep knowing I'm back on track, and I'm back doing things the right way......
 
interesting,yet not comfortable reading Sig,well done getting back on track,but got to say,if I experienced such a rush,and couldn't settle getting to sleep,I'd probably pack the whole game in,:drinks:
 
Perspective hayzee hayzee . I work permanent nights and in fact was watching the race in bed before getting three or four hours kip before work. :)
 
Quiet few days on the betting front, two days off work and catching up on some R & R. Really, really not got into the World Cup this time round. Maybe it all seems less important as i get older, maybe the England expectation were so low going to the tournament that it never piqued my interest, maybe the kick off times havent helped, but ive only seen a handful of games, and then not all the way through. Did catch USA vs Belgium tonight though and what a game. How it was 0 - 0 at 90 mins is beyond me. Howard in goal proved he`s still a world class keeper and massively massively impressed by the attitude of the USA team. Not the most gifted bunch of individual players at the tournament but what a work rate and ethic. Talk about playing for the shirt. If the country that likes high scoring games(think Basketball, American Football etc), and enjoys calling itself world champions at sports hardly anyone else plays(think Baseball and American Football again) ever truly truly embraces football then thay have the potential talent pool in terms of population to be the best in the world. It might take a generation or two and a few brave people to look at how its funded at the lower levels but if they can harness the youth side of things then the potential for their national team............
 
the news reported that 7 World Cup players are being investigated for match fixing,I'm trying to think which 7 of our players they are :dance2: :drinks:
 
I get the feeling, and I may be wrong on this, but judging by a few recent posts about the health of members in general and kids and grand kids etc that at 40 years of age I'm far from one of the oldest members of the forum. It appears that horseracing, betting and the search for consistent if not spectacular profits is,has become, or is going to be a lifelong passion for many of us. But has anybody given any thought to what would happen if they suddenly actually "cracked" the gambling side of things? We all know the game is mental(cough) as much as anything and anybody who followed Franktheform Franktheform s journey will be able to testify to that. But what if pressure, and second guessing yourself aside, you suddenly discovered you had the ability, either through form or systems to consistently pick enough winners at the prices to guarantee a very good level of profit? How many of us would continue as we are? It's something I suspect very few of us have ever given thought to. And yet part of my daily ritual, after a daily eleven or twelve hour night shift is to check my system selections and then read through the latest posts for others thoughts, selections and general banter about the horses.
Which brings me full circle to the health issue, and how others postings help keep things in perspective for all of us. For many of us things will never progress beyond the fun side of things. The elusive search for that thing just over the horizon, almost in touch but never quite within reach. People win the lottery but money doesn't make everybody happy.

It's not about the destination, but about the journey, and about the people you share that journey with.............

I did get to a stage a couple of years back when my wife was so ill she had to give up work, and my only realistic option was to try to cover her loss of earnings with my winnings. I have been making regular profits over a few years so in theory it shouldn't have been a problem - however we're talking about going from a couple of hundred or so a month extra beer money, to it being a necessity and it was a pretty horrible culture shock, I can tell you.
Respect to those that do it, but it's certainly not a 'career' option for me - I'm now happily back in the situation where it's a hobby rather than anything else - I'm lucky enough to have a job that I like doing and work with a good bunch of people.

I would say also that I've met some lovely people through my hobby, a few who have helped myself and Carol through her illness, so cheers to you all :)
 
imo @sigster,it's all about keeping things in persprctive,unfortunately there are many with congenital mental and or physical problems and those acquiring major health issues at some stage of their lives,just getting through the day for them,and their carers is an enormous challenge,and they are heroes to me.
Anyone who has had a personal,or nearest and dearest,all good or all clear set of results from very heavy med tests,would know the feeling is better than winning the lottery,looking around the world at natural and man made disasters,with all its faults,we are also very lucky to be born and raised in the UK,another Brucie bonus...
All this said,betting is a hobby for me,with the journey as much,if not more important and enjoyable as the destination,and although not something that has ever appealed to me,for some,discovering a way to make betting their main source of income is a continuing dream,well,if the penny eventually does drop,the answer/s are already on this forum...:drinks:
 
FFS, i have an abdominal tear. Probably worse than it sounds but it is painful and the wife is not best pleased as im on holiday from work this week and she had a MOUNTAIN of jobs lined up for me to do. On the other hand it does give me a chance to get used to my new Ipad. Thought id try the free 30 days of the RacingPost app as well, would be rude not to really wouldnt it?! Have to say quite enjoyed reading through it rather than buying it in paper form and not really going through all the pages. The down side of course of the injury is that i have to take it easy for a few days and not go too mad. Bored hardly describes it but at least ive had a good first day on the horses. Small stakes trixie outlayed on the ch4 races today, but a nice little return when all 3 won, so the ipad and the racing post app have made a good start together. Two of those a week and i can afford to give up working.......................................:)

Sods law of course that my systems are having a quiet couple of weeks and i can pick them out of the paper but hey ho, a winners a winner........

As a 30 something, I was still doing lots of training,one night,after an extended 'business' meeting at the pub,although not in my cups,it was close,and like a fool,rather than miss my daily workout,without warming up at all,I proceeded to punch the bag....... for 15 minutes...then onto the chest expanders and hey ho,managed to tear my chest muscles where they meet the breast bone,great fun,not,5 weeks out of action,Cheers.
 
Ouch, ouch and ouch again hayzee hayzee. To be fair mines probably not as bad as it sounds but it is very limiting. Just need to rest and take it easy for a bit.

Of course that means watching a bit of racing through the afternoon while the Mrs is at work but it's a sacrifice I'm prepared to make. Have been betting to small stakes just for a bit of fun and spending more time looking round the forum, taking time to read the stuff I often pass by. This morning I have been on spam report overload keeping the mods busy, the downside of our ever growing popularity.

Been thinking this morning about the increasingly impressive victory of Tiggy Wiggy on Saturday. 4 wins from 6 runs and 2 seconds is a record not to be sniffed at. It would be a nailed on certainty if she'd been a colt that retirement to stud would have been on the cards at the end of the season with a two year old campaign like that. It's unfortunate in this day and age that the top stables wield such power that that always seems to be the preferred option these days. Racing needs it's heroes and while there are always jockeys and trainers the press and the wider public only really get behind horses that capture the imagination. I find it equally frustrating when the top stables duck races because they don't want a confrontation with another top horse, and yet that's how racing gets its legends, Kauto Star and Denman being a great example, although if they had been from different stables who knows how things would have panned out.

Turned into a bit of a ramble towards the end, too much caffeine kicking in I suspect...........
 
Being off work and on the light duties so to speak around the house has enabled me to invest some quality time this week around the horses and in particular following some of the threads on this forum. i have to say how impressed i am with some of the work going in some of the longer running threads. There are some excellent(profitable) angles being worked on, and some of the chat involved has given me a few ideas for potential angles.

That said im equally impressed around a few other guys who consistently post up selections and results even when things arent going as well as hoped. Forums arent always about posting winners, theyre about people making the journey. One thing i have noticed is how few comments and likes some of these threads get, even when people are posting daily A bit of encouragement wouldnt go amiss sometimes. Let people know youve popped in and had a luck. Tomorrow they could be the person posting up winners.............
