Films Racing related or Not

Some one suggested suggested a film thread recently

Watched one last night X,as present from daughter in law - Dark Horse the story of the Dream Alliance syndicate and of course Dream Alliance himself - dream come true for them and make you wonder about the value of thoroughbred horses - Perhaps the Godophin outfit might benefit from a bit of mixing it up with the lesser lights.

Seabiscuit is a beautiful film.

It's probably much truer to life than the old Barry Fitzgerald film but I haven't seen that for about 50 years!

You could easily nitpick about some of the race sequences but, overall, it's a very true reflection of the book upon which it is based.

For anyone out there who hasn't seen it, I strongly recommend it. And you really don't need to be a racing fan to appreciate it.

Titus I dont about that film - for me I am sucker for all things English and the Dream Alliance film touches on several things that I was not very aware of- we only get a glimpse of the stable set up but it looks top class - I will have to visit one of these stable open days and broaden my experience.

I plan to pick up a copy of Dark Horse at some point. I missed it when it was on TV not long ago.

About Seabiscuit, though, like the book, the racing part of the story is almost incidental. It's almost a ripple effect from the people closely connected with the horse to those getting further out, all within the context of the American economy at the time.

But it is a beautifully crafted film and an absolute joy on the eye.

Just going to watch it now on Utube

Titus Watched Seaiscuit and then watched some real black and film's of actual races very impressive - might have to re value my Grit ratings after that

Not Horse Racing but when I saw this when it came out at the Cinema, I was fascinated by the way the director used a Split Screen to fill in some of the scenes. It was ahead of its time

Kes, psycho, bullet, birds and dare I say
national lampoons Christmas vacation.

Love all of them and. Oils just watch the, all day.

Currently in to the bill on watch, and CSI NY she's a dream.

Cheers

Two of my favourite films are One flew over the cuckoo's nest and The Deer Hunter. Both won 5 Oscars so I am obviously not the only to have enjoyed them ;)
Ken Kessy brilliant book and not a bad film - Deer Hunter was good but the wedding ............went on a bit -Pingman - Kestral for a knave gain great book and film version - "balding bobby Charlton" classic line - Chevy Chase brilliant especially the brother in law, all films that you watch again and again - what about Midnight Express & Casino - I could go at this with a vengeance but will leave space for others

Champions is quite good too.

I vaguely remember as a kid seeing a film called something like The Great Dan Patch, about one of the world's greatest trotters. I remember enjoying it but couldn't say how good it was as a film.

As for favourite films in general, I have such a wide taste it would be hard to come up a small list.

I especially like westerns, especially again the John Ford ones. John Wayne wasn't a great actor but he was a tremendous screen presence.

I used to be a total sucker for rom-coms but I must be undergoing some kind of psychological change as I'm very picky about them now. I still love the really good ones of the last 30 years like When Harry Met Sally, You've got Mail, Sleepless In Seattle, etc, but one or two I now avoid, like Love Actually. I just can't take the storyline between the characters played by Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. It's too true to life for someone I know so I think of them and want to cry, mainly thanks to Thompson's brilliant performance as the wronged wife. Things like that, I suppose, the ones that are too true to life in certain respects, I can't watch.

I also love what some would call the old classics, the old Bogart films, Cagney, etc etc.

I also think the Toy Story trilogy is one of cinema's greatest ever achievements.

Since it's this time of year, I also love the 'proper' Christmas films like It's A Wonderful Life, Going My Way, The Bishop's Wife, etc etc.

My fav films are historical and one i have re watched plenty of times is Kingdom Of Heaven.Currently the TV series Vikings is proving very good imo.

Tom Hardy doing very well and Lawless is a good film the yanks took a big chance casting him yet it works. He also did good in the TV series Peaky Blinders which has a racing/bookmaker background and is well worth the watch imo.

Mick Tom Hardy very good in all he does - cant beat the Brits hop he can beat his demon - He plays a good part in latest Tinker Tailor superb brtish - I am biased as I have long championed Le'Carre

I don't know much about him what is his Demon.? He is also good in The Take which is an adaption of a Martina Cole book.If you enjoy her writing then new kid on the block Kimberley Chambers is worth investigating.

He likes a drink
Oh right i wish him well with that demon. He appears to be an actor who becomes the character he plays and it must prove difficult to reverse this with "drink taken" a help.I recall many years ago Sir Alec Guinness playing Hitler and when he came off set ranting in Hitler mode even at his wife and children.
