Today started okay, Topofthecotswolds won readily at 6/4 - 2/1 was easily available quite close to post time I am pleased to say - but the other three didn't do well at all. Another dull day then.


Today's two runners produced a winner at 10/11 - anyone who didn't take SP should have done better than that, I got 11/8 for example. I won't tell you what my wife got when she put her 10p on, grrrrr. The other one hit several fences, but still looked to be well in with a chance, when he led at the third and ejected his rider - unfortunately his jumping let him down a good few times.

Improved a little there...

Today - well, two seconds and a third, the two seconds were both in with a decent chance - Still Standing got within a diminishing neck of the winner, having been backed late before the off, while Buster Edwards made a slight mess of the last but still managed to flatter to deceive on the run in, looking like he might just scramble up before the winner put the race to bed. That was a real shame as his jumping to that point had been pretty decent, making ground up at many fences... one more such jump might well have seen him win. The end result was disappointing to say the least, what could have been 2/5 ended up a fat zero.

- This last one is actually only a reserve for the race, IF he runs he might do okay.

Weekend is upon us, I'm looking forward to seeing how Logician gets on tomorrow at Ascot, Morando should give him a race but there's not much else in the field to even look at as an EW bet. The Arc on Sunday is the highlight of course, I want Enable to bow out on a major high but of course the ground is going to be pretty heavy, which should make her job rather difficult. She's nothing of a price either. Stradivarius won't run out of puff here, but again the ground is likely to blunt his speed - why the hell do the french run such a major race at this time of year? Heavy ground after buckets of rain is hardly a surprise is it? What's wrong with going a month earlier when there's less chance of snowdrifts on the track... to me the timing of the race has ruined what it should have been already, with runners such as Love being forced to withdraw due to the going, how good would the Enable/Stradivarius/Love clash have been on good ground with a bit of sunshine?

For me I'd go with Mogul for the EW option, but it doesn't look much of a betting race... maybe it's just me being grumpy. My wife has 20p on Enable from a long time back, she's got her at 3/1, she also has Stradivarius EW (10p EW) at something like 20's (I can't say exactly, the steam from my ears as she told me drowned out her later words) .... you couldn't make it up could you?

I do hope Enable wins, so that's just me and 50 million other fans I guess, but Stradivarius surely must be in with a shout - 12f in the mud at Longchamps is going to seem a damn sight further, and Strad can certainly run anything from 12f to 20f, I'm still siding with Mogul as the likely outsider, though I'll be overjoyed to see Enable win again. (Stradivarius deserves it too, but Enable gets the popular vote). The odds are useless however.

So much for Moghul - contaminated feed, all O'Brien horses out I just saw elsewhere on here. Tomorrow's race is turning into a farce - if she loses it'll be long faces all round, if she wins there'll be comments about how crap the field was. Still, I suppose the money will provide some degree pf recompense.

Shame about the Arc - I wouldn't want to be the boss of the feed company either, having pretty much ruined the Arc and badly screwing over a bunch of trainers, can you imagine if you'd had a runner in it and had to pull out because the feed was contaminated? It doesn't matter how rich you are, it must still hurt. (Imagine if Enable had been forced to pull out - how long would the arguments about her chances have gone on for?)
I didn't think much of the race, it really didn't get me fired up at all, staging it in the mud made a lottery of it all - personally I think Enable would have struggled to win on any ground this year, she was a wonder at 3 and 4 but the niggles and bits of bad luck that are common in racing have had their impact - she should have got the third Arc last year, but didn't get the prep she needed, this year was always going to be difficult.
I also felt sorry for Stradivarius, he clearly didn't enjoy himself all that much either.
