• Hi Guest, The forum will be moving hosts on 26 July and as such will be closed from Midday until the move has completed.
As we will be with new hosts it may take a while before DNS get updated so it could take while before you can get back on the forum.
I think it will take at least 4 hours but could easily be 48!
    Ark Royal
  • There seems to be a problem with some alerts not being emailed to members. I have told the hosts and they are investigating.
  • Sorry for the ongoing issues that you may have been experiencing whilst using the forum lately

It really is frustrating when the forum slows down or Server Error 500 pops up.

Apparently the hosts acknowledge there is a problem.
Thank you for using our services and sorry for the experienced delay!
Unfortunately, these errors are due to a higher server load. Our senior department knows about the issue and they are working towards a permanent resolution of the issue, however, I'd advise you to consider using our new cPanel cloud solutions: https://www.tsohost.com/web-hosting

I will have to investigate what the differences are with what We have know compared to the alternative service they want us to migrate to.
    Keep safe.

Interesting points made by all.Thank you all.
davejb davejb put his finger on what racing is like when he said "cavalier". That has always been the prevailing attitude for millenia; ever since men began competing with each other using horses ( which were their equivalent of what boy racers use today or rich folk use on the motorway.)

It ain't never been a "clean sport" and never will be. Just wishful thinking from any of us who think ( hope and pray?) otherwise.

Personally, as an old fool descended from horsetraders, I trust nobody involved with horses. A rum bunch , indeed. From super-wealthy despots to daft old blokes off the side of the road ( like me).
Not many are ever gonna tell ya the truth - a bit like politicians and rulers everywhere, imo.

Like mathematics, it's all an approximation that's been designed to "get by" , and, generally, to ensure the continuation of the benefits of comfy privilege, which few would want to surrender.

Let's take a brief look at jockeys. They often take the brunt of any slagging from Jo Public. I sse them come as young, willing kids, with red , rosy cheeks full of enthusiasm and wanting to do well.
After a few years of racing, they turn sallow and reticent; beaten down by the system. They know their place; no longer do they tear up the inner to pip the hot fav; rather, they are likely to trail in last , looking down, after riding a seemingly "strong" favourite.

So, I know from experience, there's always room for plans to go awry. Just seems to be part of the game, imo. And this is before we move into ownership; it ain't all as they say there, either. If you're gullible, as I was, you're never done paying out for every this, that, and the other. That and listening to promises and lies. :D

For all that, I still love it. Must be mad, imo.

Injury to racers? Yep, can happen genuinely in a race.Remember Ussain Bolt pulling up with a hop, skip, and a jump? It can happen and does.
Why, once at Wolver, I witnessed a dead horse ( technically had died of a heart attack or somesuch just before the line) win a race!
Shook the crap out me, I can tell ya. Still, it had crossed the line first with the jockey still just about aboard, so it had won.

Underlying illness is something else. Sometimes, it can remain undetected; sometimes connections know that there is something slightly amiss, but, think it pragmatic to try to get a run into ( out of?) the animal.
You know yourself, there are many mornings when you don't feel quite up to it, but, still go the work. And, if you ever get a nagging pain, such as a joint injury, you're never quite yourself, and, cannot really give your best go.

Just my peculiar take on things. Take it, or, leave it. I don't mind. Opinions mean a lot; some are helpful and some are not. Your choice.
Scans, blood, and weight don't lie; they give a pretty good guide, imo. We are not often party to this data.

When we fall off, we get back on, or, we don't. I can't predict which, but, I can have a guess. :(🙂

S Sandhog You make some good points above. Racing is full of apparent contradiction's and Re its straightness it suits my mind set to believe that the majority remains so while at the same time accepting that this might be a naïve outlook. But from my perspective the alternative would be that i stop my actual betting involvement and while i would find no problem in doing this it is not my wish to do so at present.

I see little wrong with a trainer Gaming the system to buy a reduced mark, but plenty when a horse is blatantly prevented from running to its best prior to the traps opening. As an aside its good to see davejb davejb thread attracting additional activity. I seldom feel able to contribute as race times are not my thing but hopefully he will feel that every or any little helps. :)

I can't remember where, and, I feel too lazy to trawl through, but, we were talking about strange results. Yes, I accept that at holiday times there are usually a sprinkling of strange results, with a handful of lesser-known stables getting good-priced winners.

However, at the same time, at a venue where many have complained about being unable to fathom things there ( Newcastle AW), there were at least five favourites that went in.

In fact, I was starting to fear for Lomu, as I generally don't see many more than three favs win at a meeting. Also, the price of said beast was drifting, and, if I hadn't rushed in the night before ( silly move on short ones, imo) I'd have gotten a better price. My mistake.
However, Luke did the bizz well, and there were no actual worries. The thing was well-rated on Inform Racing. The execution just had to match the potential. No guarantee; there never is.

Now, in the hours leading up to the race I could have gone the route of "red or black"/" heads or tails"/" evens or odds" spinner wheel merchants, whom I see in the bookies. These lads are forever pontificating about how " we've had more than our fair share of one, so 'tis time for the opposite".

Well, yes, the odds are always fifty:fifty on a coin toss, but, just because they've done their dough on a thousand reds, it doesn't mean that black is bound to be up next up. We've all probably seen it many a time.
Sure, things will change, but, despite the many theories, it's not like night following day in the gambling game. That's just my opinion.

Yes, casinos ( funded by crooks and gangsters and launderers, who don't like losing their investment) know that , in the long run, that wheel is going to give them a 3 per cent margin on turnover. And that's just on an "unbiased"," un-braked "wheel; the numbers are in their favour, if they wait long enough, and the mugs just keep on playing and paying. Mathematics.
Sure, anybody can get lucky. Happens all the time to somebody.
It's just probability and chance, and , in other words, luck.
Fortune favours the brave. God loves a trier, so God help us all!:D

Whatever floats the boat is alright by me. I still get wet at times.

No arguments with any of the above.
As I see it the BHA are not as stringent as they should be at times, such as making the courses report stuff accurately, while at other times almost micromanaging to the point of absurdity. I really don't see how they can be happy with a system that hauls people over the coals for pulling up a horse, that is dead on its feet, just because it didn't get flogged into 5th.... in fact there was one a little while back where jockey and trainer got reamed out for just that (I think the trainer was fined £1200 or something of that nature), and a few days later (sorry to be hazy about dates etc, time is losing its meaning these days) a young apprentice aboard Clarendon Street stayed on when the horse sprawled, got him going again, put him over one more fence before the horse gave up trying to respond - and subsequently died of a heart attack. In my view the horse ought to have been pulled up immediately after that sprawl, and he was certainly never going to get back into any sort of placing, a bad judgement call I thought... but at the same time I couldn't help wondering if the recent furore about not riding out a no hoper had an influence on that apprentice? I certainly don't blame the lad for what he did, but I don't think it was the right decision - and didn't at the time as I was watching the race.

On the subject of pulling a fast one in a race, I have some sympathy with owners and trainers. If a stable has some knowledge about a horse, say it is really doing well in training, has regained a previously lost spark, looks likely to run better than anyone would imagine next time out, then I fully understand the thought that says 'owners pay the bills, we do all the work, punters are just sort of parasitic creatures' and the information does not become public knowledge - to be honest I'm always surprised if a stable visit type interview throws up even a morsel of genuinely useful information. I do not think it's okay to fiddle things though - I remember when I used to go greyhound racing at a flapping track in Blackpool, and every meeting was pretty chock full of dogs where somebody was trying something - at times it was quite blatant, I saw one dog going barmy before even going into (it ended up being thrown in fact) the traps. It came out with a front paw jammed in the muzzle, but still led at the first bed a good 100 yards up the track. It DID fall over at that point, but I reckon a dog that was outpacing it's rivals while running on three legs probably had some form of assistance. I wouldn't imagine anyone would get away quite with that sort of thing in racing, but I would not be amazed to learn that a few jolly japes were decidedly outside the rules.

I doubt racing is 100% pure white here, but I also doubt that the fiddles amount to more than a trickle, and I still enjoy a day at the track when I can get there.

Very quiet just now isn't it? Tomorrow doesn't look very thrilling, two AW meetings and only two races with horses rated above 65 or so - pretty run of the mill stuff, still what do I expect on Jan 6th in a lockdown?

Bloody useless day there then! I really don't understand it, but the ratings always seem to do worse on days where there is less racing on - that winners aren't evenly spread out and therefore clump a bit at times I get, which would lead to days with few if any winners , but then there ought also to be days were a few races throw up a high percentage of winners - I certainly notice the losers clumping, not sure I've spotted the winners doing the same!

No bets today. More racing tomorrow though:

Forgive my current lack of enthusiasm, as I glance over tomorrow's racing - I can understand it being restricted to AW (my horse Glynn's run at Kempton in the Lanzarote is looking a bit dubious, isn't it? By 'my horse' I mean the one I own about half an eyelash of). It's hard to be enthusiastic about 2 cards filled with 2 mile bumpers though. If some of them aren't 2 milers then apologies, I really couldn't work up the excitement needed to check.

Ah well, yesterday's surviving cards weren't that enticing -

At least no white wash. No bets today, due to all tips being at abandoned meetings, and I think the two below - and the ratings, at least for Lingfield and Newcastle, seem to have lots of races with only a few rated horses involved..... I hope it goes without saying that in a 10 horse race with only 2 or 3 having previously earned a rating it's not a good idea to assume the other 7 or 8 will obediently line up behind them at the finish.

A profitable day again - how? Don't ask me, the racing right now is hardly inspiring stuff - be interesting to see how things went today after so many zero rated first time out types poured onto the tracks.

Today's two 'bets' ended up nowhere and a non runner - given the state of the racing and the fact that Chasamax was one of only three with a rating in his racer I certainly didn't bet on him.

Kempton 3.30 tomorrow Glynn is still declared for the Lanzarote, a listed handicap hurdle over 2m 5f - he's got 11-2 which isn't that bad, what is unfortunate is the soft going as he doesn't like it too soft. He ran 2nd to Ecco in December who went on to run 2ns to Monte Cristo later in the month at Kempton. Actually Glynn was 3rd, Ecco 2nd as the first past the post (Eaton Hill) was disqualified, that was on good to soft over a shorter trip. Glynn was a bit keen that day, which was his first outing of the season, so I'm hoping he's good enough for at least a place tomorrow provided it doesn't get too soft for him. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on with Nico De Boinville who'll be riding him for the first time - Glynn's always been regarded as a promising young jumper and I've been rather wondering when they'd get round to putting Nico on his back. The winner gets very nearly £16k, which would be very nice - my cut of that would be about £2, so I'm not looking for a windfall as such!

No bets showing for tomorrow.
