Compiling Speed figures.

Hello all,

It has been a fantastic week of 2yo racing with some very smart performances.

I was very taken with the performance of Gisburn earning a speed figure of 69 and i think the time would of been better had he not lost a couple of lengths drifting to the rail.

"GISBURN had shown clear promise here on his debut over 5f last month and was the only member of the field with previous racecourse experience. His rider made the most of it, and he was well on top from 2f out, pulling right away in the manner of a colt with obvious Royal Ascot potential. He looks exciting, and the Coventry will presumably be his race."

Was the race contested tonight by Lethal Blast a race to follow he took them round at what looked like a fast pace & was swallowed up in the last furlong, I particularly liked Vandads run he was in receipt of a lot of weight though, but I’m sure there are better race watchers than me on this forum

In my humble opinion, it's difficult to say with 3yr olds, as Adayar was running a shorter trip at Sandown and improved tremendously when upped to 1m 4, but then, Alenquer beat other horses too that have gone on and won like Lone Eagle, who was upped in trip to win a Listed and previously was a group 3 winner, so the form may have some depth. Certainly worth tracking and can win another Group 3 again when placed in the right race at the right distance. Difficult to say if he will improve much more or not but could well do so.

Now the dust has settled on Royal Ascot here are my top figures up to and including 19th June, the Coventry is the best 2yo race of the season, Poetic Flare is an above average 3yo given his optimum conditions and some surprises in the 4yo+'s

I no longer look at the French racing scene, the standard times used by the Racing Post are not fit for purpose and are incorrect.

I took a look at the time of Brokeback Mountain using an updated set of standard times, Brokeback Mountain race-winning time was fast by 1.70s.

i came across this new website Pace Maps – Jumps Pace Maps which looks interesting ?

View attachment 80530

"The yellower the background the slower the relative pace was between the obstacles used (in long-distance races times between every second or third obstacle might be used) while a red background illustrates where the pace was much quicker. "
not being an expert on how to use this info for the future , i wonder if anyone has an opinion ? but what i can see is that both Masters Legacy and Buzz both quickened well off a slow pace which looked good to the eye , would they be so impressive off an early faster pace ?
Nice double today , had to wait 18 months but seems you were reading the charts correctly after all simon boardman simon boardman
I only remembered this because I had a habit of putting horses mentioned on this thread in a tracker with little comments and they both popped up today, didn’t back them unfortunately lmao

Most days when I and compiling my speed figures I come across some glaring errors published by the Racing Post, yesterday it was the turn of the RP standard time for the 2m60y(NHF) at Punchestown.

Yesterday there were 2 races over the 2m60y distance, one was a hurdle race and the other a NHF race, the RP standard time for the hurdle race is 3m 47.0s (227.0s).
When you have a NHF flat race over the same distance a good rule of thumb, the time should be quicker by 6.0s (no obstacles to jump), so the standard time should have been approximately 3m 41.0s (221.0s), The RP standard time used was 3m 58.0s (238.0s) with would equate to the time being over a furlong out (17.0s), this would explain why I only had a speed figure of only 1 for the winner and TS had a figure of 83.

Maybe, it's just me having a bad hair day.

I've actually just come onto the forum to see what you did with that crock, of **** Mike ( TheBluesBrother TheBluesBrother ) - his times for NHF over 2m 2f is only 2s slower, so apparently it takes 2s for a horse to run 380 yards. I think that's about 360 mph, off the top of my head.... hmm, 388 and change in fact. Seems unlikely to me.

On his previous figures the standard ought to have been about 3m 36s, so that's what I'm using for my 'as per RP' set of figures, which will differ markedly I suspect from the figures I get from my own standards.

I don't know if this is just a typo, or the guy is plucking numbers from a hat, but he does seem to be changing 'standard times' quite a bit so maybe he's just typed in what his latest calculation threw out without checking it for sense.

For what it's worth the winner's time was probably only moderate, perhaps he just fudged things to avoid having that one race showing as being 30+ seconds slow for some reason.

Things have got so bad, DE even stopped acknowledging my emails when I pointed out errors to him, so much so, I wondered if it was still him compiling the Top Speed figures, I have no doubt it was a typo and the standard time should read approx 218.0s even if you were to point this out to the RP nothing will be done about it.

Just recently I told the RP customer service team, unlike them, I work to a higher standard than they do, I have more tools at my disposal and collectively their time men couldn't teach me shit about speed figures, I don't make mine up.

RP does not care to check it is publishing accurate data, clearly nobody is even proof reading the results to pick up glaring errors, at most they've got someone glancing down the page who isn't familiar enough with the race times to spot when they are ludicrously out of whack. I presume the bulk of the results info is actually automatically fed in from computer with little opportunity to cock anything up.

Although I did enjoy reading some of the general articles in the RP, I gave up subscribing to it simply because it's bloody expensive for something you have to double check yourself - I think it was around £350 they wanted off me as I told them to shove it. Over a period of time I got various offers emailed to me, I think one was for half price, and when I considered it I decided it wasn't even worth that.

I doubt there's a large percentage of people reading the RP, or more importantly subscribing to it, who are bothered by accurate data - surely an awful lot of racing folk take it as being the trade paper, with stories about the people and horses that they are interested in, lots of punters who take it probably look no further than Pricewise and the RPRs to save looking at form themselves, and of course all the bookie adverts are in there generating revenue, and it's a fair bet that bookies don't give a hoot what times RP prints for things. It makes me wonder if say the Daily Racing Form were to open up over here would there even be a market for it? I suspect not - for some reason Brits seem to think accurate timing and the like are some sort of nerdy backwater for the sort of people they'd rather not associate with.

Never mind, it comforts me to know that if RP folded I could still do my stuff unhindered.
Dave
