Abandonment

Larry

Stallion
With some of todays races at Lingfield being abandoned because of slipping on corners making it the 4th interuption in as many days, is this due to overwatering or some other reason, please don't say it's because of the jockeys being over sensitive as I'm on their side, safety should alway come 1st

Lingfield's Turf course has been problematic for a long time now - if you ever get a chance to catch one of Turftrax's going maps for Lingfield Turf, especially if there has been a bit of rain beforehand it can sometimes look like the scarf Noel Edmonds used to give out on the Old TV show Multi-Coloured Swap Shop - some maps have five different Going descriptions all around various parts of the course which can range from Good To Firm to Heavy on some days. Had a look for an example on Turftrax's archive but most of the maps are unavailable. Suppose nowadays this is the Gold Standard in Going/Course Condition reporting Going Report | York Racecourse - but it would not take much to take a "few" readings with the Going Stick around the course much nearer racetime to correlate with the usual much earlier readings that are done sometimes up to 7 hours before racing starts.

Self Cert N/r on the day with Going as the reason often leave me feeling puzzled when i check the animals back form. These can be market leaders which trigger a large R4 for those who have already bet on the race. In some instances there would be a case for the Stewards - BHA to question the trainers thinking, but i suspect the latter feel safe as the former do not even bother to look. !

Don't know about over-watering but natural drainage has always been a problem at the course - shows up with the amount of fixtures that get abandoned when they run over the National Hunt and if they do run , the ground is usually desperate. Here's a recent link(May 22) stating the course is undertaking drainage work.- BHA confirms switch of races from Turf to All-Weather

Very true Mick , you see a lot of these at courses like Chester & Thirsk - that most correlate with bad draws seems to go unnoticed with the Old School Tie Brigade within the BHA.

You can see the soil types here

Lingfield is not on good soil.
Interesting site, years ago once sent 60 odd emails to nearly every Clerk of The Course asking for details on soil type, drainage & watering procedures including course maintenance and stuff like fence/hurdle type ad asked them to give their course a description in their own words , ie stiff ,flat etc - LOL - got one reply haha, James Armstrong (who was COC at Newcastle at the time and i think still does Hexham and used to do Sedgefield back in the mid 2000's) came back with a very detailed response. Kirkland Tellwright (Haydock) also emailed me back telling me that none of this was my business lol and to look at Timeform's map and course description! Found out little snippets about courses from this site - Ascot Racecourse - All in the planning | Pitchcare and Google Earth (inclines, elevation etc)
